Well even if Frank HAD business in Chicago, Estelle said SHE went out for a quart of milk. George said THEY (not HE) were supposed to be at work. Still an inconsistency.

He may not have known that his father was in Chicago, but even if he did, he was probably there on business. Whether or not his mother was at work, or at the store for a quart of milk didn't seem to matter to George at any point in the story. Anyway, his mother was probably forced to retire from whatever she did after she came down with chronic son-induced back problems. Remember, she was back in the hospital after reading in a magazine that her son was gay, not that there's anything wrong with that.
