Fans in the San Francisco Bay Area report difficulty finding reruns of "The Contest" episode and discuss whether it's being withheld from syndication or shown rarely.
or do they refuse to show "The Contest" as part of the local reruns. I have been watching the reruns for months and months fairly consistently, and have never seen this episode. Everyone keeps saying how it's the best one and IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!
If some of you have seen it in reruns, the next logical question would be if anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area has seen in on Ch. 2. If so, I'll just keep looking. If not, anybody willing to tape it for me?

I don't think it's been shown anywhere lately. (I was fortunate to get in on tape during the original season it aired.) All the stations show the same episode in syndication on the same day. If your particular station objected to it, they would have to preempt it with some other show, but the rest of us would have seen it. However, it's my understanding that this is not the case, since everyone who posts on this subject has the same complaint -- that they haven't seen it in syndication lately. So, it must be the owner of the syndication rights who is holding it back, not your local station.

I live in the SF area and "The Contest" was shown, though it was a long time ago. They haven't shown it since (are you talking about KTVU? That's what I have)

"The Contest" has been shown only once in syndication, back in April or May. Later, I read here in the NG that it was shown on that day in honor of Jerry's birthday. I live in SF and it was on KTVU. Yes, it's frustrating to see the "pilot" episodes without "The Contest" in sequence.
Sequentially, it should come after "The Outing," I believe. There is a very humorous scene in "The Contest" which shows George visiting Estelle in the hospital and a gorgeous nurse coming in to give a beautiful female patient a sponge bath. George gets aroused watching their shadows through the curtain in much the same uncomfortable way he reacted to the male nurse giving a male patient a sponge bath in "The Outing." (Although why Estelle should be assigned to a room with a male patient is anyone's guess.)

You've got the connection right but the order wrong. The female/female bathing scene comes first (in The Contest), then the male/male bathing scene comes next (in The Outing).
(Although why Estelle should be assigned to a room with a male patient is anyone's guess.)
She shares a room with a male patient because the writers wanted to make a parallel hospital bathing joke. This is, in fact, your biggest clue that the male/male scene comes second in the sequence. In the first bathing scene, the setup is logical because it's derived from the plot of the episode. In the second bathing scene, the setup is illogical because it's derived from the plot of a different episode, and wedged into a new episode.
They showed it here in IL. about 3 months ago, so it is shown in syndication(just not very often).
