What was the show that opens with Jerry and George with mustaches and I think it was no part of the plot.

I think they strip them off. And was the show a season opener?

The Butter shave is that show you are asking about. I don't think the mustaches were presented as "tear off". In fact Kramer, enter Jerry's, finds the mustache idea is dead, goes to his apt to shave it off & returns to Jerry's to start his affair with Butter after a shave. It was also explained at the beginning of the episode that they grew the facial hair during the "off season"(summer) to 'take a vacation from themselves!!!!?"
