There's a point in the episode, (which I can't seem to find in the script), where Jerry is walking out of the apartment/leaving with George in softball uniforms -- and he looks at the camera to say "...?..."
It looked like an "aside" to the viewing audience, because I don't think anyone was left in the apartment when he said it.
At the time I saw it - all I remember was that what he said didn't seem to make sense/fit into the context of the plot.

It gave me the impression that somehow the actual Seinfeld set for that moment was considered the stage/"the backstage" he was referring to...
...And was saying to the audience "You stink".
