why the gum?

This has probably been brought up before....I imagine everything has...but anyway, in last night's Fox 5 episode, one of my many favorites, the one about Lloyd Braun reviving the old Palace movie theatre, early on George refuses Lloyd's offer of a stick of chinese gum explaining that he doesn't chew gum. Later, he buys some gum from the equistrine cashier; it makes sense, because he just needs to buy something to get her to open the cash register. But still later in the episode he stops in the street and again buys gum from Larry David. Makes little sense - he's already said, and verified later, that he doesn't chew gum. Why is he suddenly stop to buy some? I don't think there's a legitimate answer (for instance, I don't think that he was lying when he first states that he's a non gum chewer, if that's what you were going to suggest); it just doesn't make sense.

This was only said to Lloyd Braun, however. Remember, he once faked an injuryy and even went to a doctor to avoid being caught in a lie told to his nemesis, Lloyd.

My guess is that he initially refused the gum from Lloyd out of dislike for the guy (and possibly distrust of gum "from China"), and then explained it with the lie that he never chews gum. Later, he doesn't really want to buy gum--he just wants Ruthie to open the cash register--but does so out of need. Then he lies about it to Lloyd to avoid getting caught in the earlier lie.

At the end, he really does want gum, and buys it from the stand.

Why not? Is it so hard to accept the idea of George lying? ;-)

Nah, of course not, it just didn't seem like it in that particular case. He said it so matter of factly and didn't look/sound like he was in lying mode, and I'm not sure what the motivation for the lie would have been at that point - I see what you're saying, just didn't read the scene that way as it played. Oh well, guess we'll never know.

Funny, I hadn't looked in on this newsgroup in a long time, I'd say a couple years, 'til yesterday, and some of the same lists and discussions are still going on - threads listing all movie titles mentioned in the series were around years ago!

I know what you mean, though--if George really was lying (especially when he's confronted by Lloyd Braun while trying to get Ruthie to open the cash register), Jason Alexander should've made it more clear. As you say, he played it too matter-of-factly.

Speaking of George's mendacity, I love Jerry's line in The Secret Code: "Come on--weave your web, liar man."
