Here's my theory...they made Phil's aprtment 5E to tantalize serious Seinfeld fans who pay attention to that type of thing

   should be 5E, judging by the numbers of doors i counted. Jerry's
   being 5A, Kramer's being 5B...and then working down the hallway...

And Newman lives in a different wing of the building.  So I guess
he can still live in 5E and it wouldn't blow the precarious apartment
number situation out of the water.
