The Contest

I was watching the Contest yesterday when my tape cut halfway through. Even though i've watched it before i can't remember what happens. I got up to the part where George was saying JFK Jr drove home with the virgin. What happened after that? who won the contest? Was it even revealed?? And what happened with George and the sponge baths? Was it two guys or something??

Eventually, George won the contest. We find this out in the next(the 5th) season, in the episode "The Puffy Shirt", where George tells one of the TV executives that he is master of his domain because he won a contest.

Thus, George is the master of his domain!!!!

Everybody know that George lies when he can, why shouldn't he have lied to the photografes that he had won, just to get the job. Lies is what he does.

Because it didn't matter - he had already gotten the job. And this would be a strange thing to lie about - even for George. The only likely reason for George to proclaim he won a contest in this situation was that it was true. Lies are art to George. He wouldn't waste one on something like this. He wouldn't gain anything at all by doing it.

I can tell you that George won the contest. first the sponge baths was with 2 women, but the second time it was 2 men. Jfk jr got the virgin in the end

It never said which one, George or Jerry, actually won the contest.

George won the contest- (there was a refrence about it in an episode when George was a hand model)

In "The Puffy Shirt" (66) George is told about Ray McKidney, who used his hands for better and worse, and George says "You don't have to worry about me - I won a contest!"

The final cut shot shows all of the contest members sleeping soundly, as Kramer was shown in the first scenes. ( does this mean the contest was a draw?) In the final scene Kramer is shown sleeping with the naked lady from over the street. A true Classic, I have a copy on tape for my own files. Although it is in PAL format and of little use to those with NTSC systems.

We did find out who won. George did. At the end the virgin walks out on Jerry and he then goes and sits at the window to watch the naked woman - the implication is that he's watching her for a reason. I agree this is not made 100% clear in this episode but in the one where George becomes a hand model they talk about masturbation and George says "I won a contest". It all makes sense eventually.

The way I see it, George is sleeping soundly because he knows he's going to win the contest - in fact, it's hardly a contest at all with Elaine out of the picture ( - and face it, without JFK Jr. Elaine could still be in business...) There's no doubt in my mind George was fixed on winning that contest - he didn't fool around that night. Besides, (as far as I remember) he wasn't stimulated by external temptations like the other three.

It's also impossible for me, as expressed earlier in this NG, to believe that George was lying in "The Puffy Shirt".

Wasn't this settled a long time ago, In the episode about the Puffy Shirt, George's Hand-Model boss is worried that George might not be "master of his domain". George replies "You don't have to worry about me. I won a contest".

Isn't that the episode were George goes to the hospital to see his mother and in the next bed there is a nurse giving a patient a sponge bath. I would call that external temptations.

I agree with you there. I think the producers, writers (whoever) have the characters generally speaking the truth (unless untruth is an explicit part of the particular scene). I believe Elaine was telling the truth when she said she's not Jewish; I believe that Dolores's name is really Dolores; and I believe George won the contest (based on the Puffy Shirt episode).

What boggles my mind - IF George caved as well that night - is how he knew he'd win. Did Jerry phone him that night telling him he caved, leaving George to take matters into his own hands? Would you? Or did they both look at their watches before they caved, so that the next day they could point out the winner? Would George risk it? I agree all men have to masturbate, but I see George as first of all too competetive, and secondly much too cheap to cave this early in the contest. I believe him to have more self control than that, and undoubtedly more than Jerry has in a situation like this. As I've said earlier, George only had one person to fear. It was not Jerry.

I don't know if they've shown this episode overseas, but there was a subsequent episode (I'm sorry I don't know the name) where George is being a hand-model (one who models hands for ads). The person who is handling him talks about George's predecessor who had beautiful hands, but ruined his career by not being the "master of his domain". George replied that "You don't need to worry. I won a contest!"

That confirmed that George won the contest.

Yes, I know all this. In fact, 15/01 I wrote:

-"The Contest" (51) was won by George. Remember in "The Puffy Shirt" (66) -when George was a hand-model, he was told about this guy who had the most -lovely hands, and who wouldn't put them to rest for any woman - he wasn't -master of his domain - which resulted in overuse of the muscles in the -hands and locked them like deformed claws. Confronted with this George -smiles and says: -"(You don't have to worry about me) -I won a contest!"

Some days later somebody wrote that we should be better at isolating each episode, and judge by single units. There were also some bitching about the possibility of George lying in "The Puffy Shirt". So, disregard that episode (I believe George to tell the truth in it though).

I don't remember any uncertainty about who won the contest, back when the episode first ran. Could it be that in shortening the episode for reruns, the producers cut out a moment of significance?
