I, as a Flemish Belgian to make it more complicated have to say... in English Holland is mostly used as the country The Netherlands but ... Holland in fact is only a part of The Netherlands, it's the part where Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht ... is Eindhoven is Brabant and you have Friesland in the North.

But when people say Holland they mean The Netherlands, the whole country. It's only when we Flemish people mix it up they start the whole thing about provinces, because we as neighbours have to know, the mentality is different also. But Dutch people live all over the place, they are the general name for people who live in The Netherlands

Correct.. Holland can be translated as 'hollow land': the part of the Netherlands which is under sea-level.. Which remembers me of some English friends who visited me in Amsterdam and expected to sea a wall of water :).
