Season premiere, and maaaan she spent the whole episode pissed as Marv Albert at a dentist's convention!
Why are the writers turnin her into such a short-tempered, mean, inhospitable, chronic-PMS bi**h?
Are they goin somewhere with this, or is this just something they decided to do for the hell of it? Because I really miss the old, fun-loving, laughing, querky, joyful babe that was Elaine in the first 2 seasons.
Everybody else generally remained the same, why screw with what works?
I agree. She's just a pain to watch. Bitter and mean, and not funny at all. I have no idea why the writers want to change her. She doesn't even seem to gel with the others now. They're all bitter of course, but I don't see how Jerry, George and Kramer can stand to be with her anymore.
This change has been done and over with for quite a while now! In fact, it was pretty clear that Elaine was so far off into this bitter women bit that she so clearly came across as in the premiere as far as two seasons ago. She has not only changed her screen persona, but also her looks(maybe Julia got a face\nose job? Can you see the diff? But she didn't need a thing!). Also the writers and Julia seemed to be making a conscious effort to make this change. It's a people thing, don't you think? People change, and Elaine has kind of hinted at her dark side with a few one-liners in early episodes. Last season, when she started to ridicule Kramer in her office, it was clear to me that this is the side of Elaine that the writers and Julia, wish to peruse. I agree, I too miss the lovable, witty, charming, and most importantly: adorable Elaine that we all know and love. But I respect this move, because it shows a more challenging side of a TV sitcom character. How many actors get a chance to expand on an idea for a character? Not many get that chance, and if they do they aren't brave enough to break formula to take on the change. As Sean Connery said in First Knight "I take the good with the bad. I can't love people in slices". I feel the same way about Elaine. But YMMV.
I suppose. Still, I watch sitcoms to be entertained...I don't find this incarnation of Elaine to be entertaining at all. I sure hope the writers have a definite reason for doing this, other than to do something different.
I'm going to figure there's a damned fine chance this has already been discussed extensively, but I only just subscribed to this group and I don't want to read the entire set of archives before writing on this subject.
Is Julia pregnant (or ill)? My friend and I began noticing how baggily clothed she was for so much of the second half of last season. We thought, fine, we're just uninformed or oversuspicious. Even if whe was pregnant, everyone will have been smart enough to schedule things for her to be back in "full view" by the start of this season.
But NO! We get yet another episode like I describe above, except she spends the ENTIRE time sitting down and completely away from the rest of the cast. I tell you something is going on here, and I don't think it's just that I've been influenced too much by my second favorite show, The X-Files.
Even after the flight is over, what do they do with her? They stick her in a taxi cab, always careful to keep everything below her neckline buried in clothes, packages and front seat.
I agree that her face looks different, but I submit that it's because her face _is_ different. She's either pregnant or ill.
All this is so obvious to me that I have to believe I've just been ignorant of what everyone else has been talking about. Oh, well. Has anyone else noticed these things?
First of all, Julia is pregnant, so they have to hide that. Second of all, you're all crazy because the Elaine character has only gotten better over the years. I find her funnier than ever. The other three are all weird in their own ways, so why can't she be crazy too? I find the things that she does (like yelling about the drink cart, getting rid of barking dogs, having a vendeta against the soup nazi,repeatedly threatening George's life,etc.) hilarious. Doesn't anyone agree with me?
Her baby was born several months ago, I figured they would have shot this episode well after that.

Not when that's ALL she does. We used to get flashes of her "dark side" and that was very entertaining. But now she's become a way-too-bitter shrew who can't do anything but grit her teeth and shriek at people. I certainly don't blame Julia, she's doing the best she can with the crap the writers are giving her.
Did anyone else think that Elaine's part in the premier was ridiculous? The rest of the episode was great -- George's handicap, Newman's obsession with Kramer, the butter thing, Banya -- but Elaine's part A) had nothing to do with anything else going on in the show - the only connection was a brief call to Jerry and B) was not even remotely funny! Haven't the writers learned they can't keep these characters isolated - it just doesn't work! Obviously it's necessary to separate them for certain incidents, but as long as they come together at the end, everything's ok. Elaine had virtually no contact with the gang here, and her segments suffered tremendously because of this. Jason

Well, I don't know, I've -never- much cared for her. But at least she's not -wet- like Pudge the Loser....
At least they finally got a hairdo for her that makes her look better. That OLD one, the big round thing over her forehead? MAN that was awful! It accented her chipmunk cheeks & Nash Rambler Grill teeth expression... I like the little ringlets on her. She IS neurotic as hell, though, lately, isn't she!
To me, Jerry & Kramer are the best thing in the show. I've loved to watch that guy who plays Kramer since he was playing the demented kid on "Fridays!"
All of this attacking of Lanie is insane...she's the finest woman God ever created (and She has made plenty of fine ones, thank you). Lanie, in all of her incarnations, is beautiful, sexy, funny, riveting, and WONDERFUL...
I'm going to have to kick the shit out of the next person (smaller than me) who trashes our beautiful Lanie...
