The Alternative Mindset

You know what's worse than people who hop on the Beavis and Butthead bandwagon because the were in Rolling Stone and are now the flavor of the week? All these fucking alternativeoids who go around saying, "Beavis and Butthead suck now becuase they are so mainstream". Are you people incapable of thinking for yourselves? Are you still so awash in the need for adolescent rebellion that have to bash something everyone else likes? Why can't you just judge something on it's own merits? Beavis and Butthead are funny, on their own merit, independent of what cable channel they appear on, what magazine they are written up in, or what bands like them.

I see the same fucking trend with people musical taste at the college radio station here where I work. Whereas Chicago bands like Urge Overkill and the Smashing Pumpkins were the toast of that whole alternativoid scene a year ago, they are now scorned as "mainstream", not becuase the music is different, but because, "Um, people like Urge now, so we can't like them anymore, because otherwise we won't be like rebels, and like alienated, and all that crap." Grow up, and decide for yourself!

No kidding. This reminds me of all those stupid people back in high school that would wear black everyday and act depressed, to be "different". Funny thing is, they all looked and acted the same. Now, if somebody wanted to be different, and dressed up goofy, like a clown or a golfer, well, maybe I could respect that. But people that can only like something if it is non-mainstream, well, I feel sorry for them.

It's not like that, I don't like the sold out bands because they changed their sound to make money. I still listen to their old stuff tho. for example: soul asylum was great before "the horse they rode in on" and sucked after that. it wasn't because they were too popular, it was because they changed their sound to a wussy, poppy sound.

One more thing, I hate the label alternative. the word "trendy" over the years had connotations like "metal" "pop" "rock 'n roll" but today that connotes "alternative" the flannel generation. -vin

All said so far is supported by me. Hey, if you like it, then you should listen to it. Perhaps an "alternative" to the "alternative" should be found, to accomodate those who don't care about them labels and bounaries, and are there for the music. Methinks it's all a corporate plot to prostitute and profit off of "youth culture." ;-)
