Actually, they were both wrong, there are 79 episodes of the Original Star Trek, The Menagerie was ONE episode...jeez!!!

I would have to say the Menagerie was two episodes. Had it been aired as one 2 hour show (as the premiere of the Next Generation was) and subsequently split, it'd be one. In the final analysis it just boiled down to laziness and hey we've got a whole unused pilot here...let's frame it with a couple minutes of crap to explain it and take off for the week.

Not laziness, desperation. Roddenberry was running behind in delivering episodes, so he devised the plan to use the original pilot. I thought the result was brilliant! It made it seem as if Starfleet (and Spock) had an actual history.
