Actually, it's not 100% certain that "Xenu" is the correct spelling. L Ron Hubbard had awful handwriting, and in the widely-distributed handwritten Operating Thetan 3 document, it's inconclusive whether he meant "Xenu" or "Xemu". Scientologists won't clarify; the majority of members haven't even heard the Xenu/Xemu story because they haven't bought OT3 status yet, and those who have paid for a sufficiently high rank (Tom Cruise is an alleged OT7) aren't allowed to reveal any of the "secrets".
But most people go with "Xenu", because, you know, "Xemu" would be a little bit silly.
