I agree, but there ae a few floating around and we should decide on one to avoid any confusion in the future. I suggest a thread to which all FAQs are posted and another in which they are discussed. If a consensus can't be reached through a general discussion, a vote should be taken. For judging criteria, I suggest completeness & ease of reading. Thoughts? Suggestions? Complaints? Death threats?

Prologue
This article discusses the answers to questions frequently asked on alt.tv.southpark, the primary Usenet discussion forum for Comedy Central's hit series South Park, which airs Wednesdays at 10:00 PM EST. Most importantly, this FAQ will attempt to address questions that people don't ask but should. If you read and understand this thoroughly, you stand a reasonable chance of posting to the discussion group for one of the most widely popular cartoons of the 1990s without having the rest of us think you are a complete blithering idiot. If you are, in fact, an idiot, please include the word, "IDIOT" in the subject headings of all of your posts so that other users are forewarned.
Version 1.1 of the F.A.Q. updated a few bits of incomplete or incorrect information, added a few URLs and chat channels to the Internet Resources section, and added the section on Easter Eggs (hidden secrets in South Park). One thing that I am still looking at adding is a list, or at least an internet location for a site (URL) that contains the lyrics of popular South Park songs, such as, "Kyle's Mom is a Stupid Bitch in D Minor." If anyone knows of the whereabouts of such a site, let me know.
Version 2.0 of the F.A.Q. added information regarding the New Year's Eve marathon, and changed a few formatting things. I don't expect any major changes to the FAQ until the new episodes are released in February. Section I : General Posting Information and Guidelines
- How did alt.tv.southpark originate (history)?
Shortly after the first episode of South Park aired in late August, 1997, it had rapidly developed a large following. A discussion immediately ensued in the Usenet newsgroup alt.tv.comedy-central, the primary discussion group for Comedy Central programs. Comedy Central had also begun an e-mail mailing list for the program as well. By early September, 1997, the traffic on the mailing list and the posts to alt.tv.comedy-central had grown to such a point that a new newsgroup was deemed necessary, and alt.tv.southpark was born.
The newsgroup rapidly grew in a short period of time. The topics of discussion were fairly broad, sometimes straying a little off-topic, but most were remotely connected to the program. There were also a fairly large amount of binary files (sounds and graphics) that were posted for all to download, which didn't bother many at first, but soon grew out of hand when someone posted the entire Spirit of Christmas episode (all 53 MB of it) in 50 separate posts in the newsgroup. It was at this point that a proposal was submitted to alt.config, and shortly thereafter in November, 1997, alt.binaries.southpark was created for the purposes of trading South Park sound and graphics files in the Usenet environment.
- What is the topic of alt.tv.southpark?
alt.tv.southpark is a general discussion group for posting information and comments relating to the Comedy Central Television Program South Park. Please keep this in mind when posting to the group and try to remain on topic. Posts regarding the unfortunate death of Chris Farley, Beavis and Butthead, Spam, America, MTV, Viva-Variety, or anything non-South-Park related do not belong here and should not be posted.
- What is a binary and why can't I post it to this newsgroup?
A binary is the Usenet terminology for anything posted to a newsgroup except text. Binaries can include pictures, sounds, programs, etc. Binaries are often denoted by a file name associated with the post (such as "cartman.wav"). The three letters or numbers at the end of the filename (after the period) indicate a file type. Here are a few common file types that you might see in alt.tv.southpark:
*.WAV : Windows sound files *.MP3 : MPEG Layer 3 CD quality audio files *.MOV : QuickTime Movie (video) files *.MPEG : Another video file format (not to be confused with MOVs or audio MP3s) *.GIF : Graphics Interchange Format (standard graphics file format; pictures) *.JPEG : Another common graphics file format; pictures
Due to the nature of the files, binaries are fairly large, and hence annoying to download in a Usenet environment, particularly by those that use a non-graphical newsreader, such as Pine or rn (in Unix), or those with a fairly slow 14.4 or dial-up connection to the internet. Due to the popularity of exchanging binary files, there has been a separate Usenet newsgroup, alt.binaries.southpark, set up for the posting of such binary files related to the television series, South Park.
- Can somebody send me ________ files, VHS tapes of shows, or whatever?
Of course not, you cretin. Sending people things when asked only encourages newbies to make more requests. A much more efficient way to find information would be to scan the list of South Park web sites listed in Section IV, or search for information on one of the popular internet search engines, such as Yahoo. Then, only after you've exhausted your search, post your request to the newsgroup. If you are making this request simply to advertise the fact that your IQ is lower than your shoe size, admit to having lost your through some boneheaded maneuver like accidentally deleting your personal archive directory.
As for VHS tapes of shows, people generally don't have the time or resources to be copying tapes and mailing it out to people (unless you run into a die hard fan with no life). But most importantly, South Park is a copyrighted program, protected by copyright law. It is illegal to make copies of the program and mail it out for profit without the expressed written permission from the shows editors, producers, or Comedy Central. It is a serious crime that is punishable by both fines and/or jail time. So, if you want copies of the show, record it for your own personal use. So don't say we didn't warn you!

- What is a troll?
Trolls are little, slimy, green creatures that live beneath bridges, but that's not important right now. In the Usenet environment, the term, "thread" have been applied to posts that have been replied over and over again that are very repetitive, very annoying, and very rarely having anything to do with the topic of the newsgroup. Of course, some threads are useful, but a, "troll," is one that keeps a very old thread going that should've been killed a long time ago. The staple diet of the troll is Spam, so by responding to the cascade of posts, you are creating Spam, and thus feeding the trolls. So please refrain from feeding the trolls in this newsgroup. Thanks!
Perhaps the very first troll in alt.tv.southpark was an individual by the name of Edwina Roberts. A staunch Christian/Religious Righter, she is best known for her opposition of South Park and her views that the show should be taken off the air (doesn't this sound a bit like Kyle's Mom, the stupid bitch?).
- What is a KILLFILE?
A KILLFILE is a particular file that some newsreaders use to discard certain messages with pre-determined characteristics so that they are not viewed or downloaded to your computer. Their use dates back to the early days of Usenet when users were reading news with a Unix-based newsreader such as rn (rn is a Unix command which basically is called "Read News:" what "rn" stands for). Users of Microsoft Outlook Express (the e-mail/newsreader client that comes with Internet Explorer 4.0, also have a KILLFILE at their disposal. This can be accessed from the drop-down menus under, "Tools," and then under, "Newsgroup Filters." Using this option, one can filter anything posted by a certain individual, such as, "DieYuppie," or anything posted with a certain topic or older than a certain date.
The registered version of the newsreader, "Agent" supports killfiles as well. More information on this can be found on Yahoo by searching for, "Agent." There is also a plug-in for Netscape Communicator 4.0 that supports a killfile which can be downloaded at:

9. Are there any basic Usenet standards that should be followed when posting to this newsgroup?
One should be generally aware of the common rules of netiquette that should always be followed (even in private e-mail). Some of the more important rules would be to please refrain from capitalization, always check your spelling, and to just include the necessary quoted text so as to keep the size of your reply down when replying (that way, more people will read your response). Section II : General South Park Program Information
- What channel, date, and time is South Park?
Well, for those of you living in a cave somewhere in Alaska, South Park airs on Comedy Central on Wednesdays at 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM (thursday morning). Wednesdays episode is re-broadcast on Saturdays at 10:00 PM and 2:00 AM (sunday morning). The show is also shown on Sundays at midnight.
2. Is South Park offensive, and why? Should I be concerned about my children watching the program?
South Park is rated TV-MA/L. It contains adult language and is an adult-oriented cartoon, which may have some offensive content. While it appears offensive at first, the material is somewhat deep in nature and carries quite a significant message to its audience. Due to the nature of the show, it is not recommended for anyone under the virgin age of 18.
3. How many episodes are there? What are all of the episodes of South Park that have aired to date?
There are currently nine aired episodes of South Park (ten if you count the Spirit of Christmas, which is not really a part of the series).

You heard wrong. South Park is the highest rated show in the history of Comedy Central. Network programmers would be stupid to cancel it (they may be dumb, but not THAT dumb). Also, any rumors that Tom Selek has allegedly purchased South Park in order to take it off the air are also FALSE.
- Are they making any new episodes and/or when do they come out?
Yes, Comedy Central has ordered approximately 13 new shows for the 1998 season. The "unofficial" schedule is as follows:
2/4: #108: "Damien" : Jesus and Satan fight a battle for spiritual domination which conflicts with Cartman's birthday party. 2/11: #111: "Tom's Rhinoplasty" : A substitute teacher poses a threat to Stan and Wendy's relationship. 2/18: #112: "Mecca Streisand" : The boys find a prehistoric relic that spawns a monster that threatens to destroy the world. Starring Barbara Steisand. 2/25: #113: "Cliffhanger" : Cartman is acting strange and the school counselor suggests the cure lies with finding his father.
Special Show for Easter/Spring. Possibly another marathon between January and the summertime. The new season begins in the Summer of 1998.
6. What is the Spirit of Christmas, SoxMAS, and Jesus vs. Frosty, and where can I find it?
The original Spirit of Christmas was an episode entitled, "Jesus and Frosty," which was made by Trey Parker and Matt Stone while they were in college, and also on a fairly low budget. It featured characters similar to the four boys we know today, and even featured the death of Kenny, but was never intended to go very far.
It did, however make it's way into one Fox executive's hands when, in 1995, filmmakers Trey Parker and Matt Stone were hired by this Fox executive to make a video to send as a Christmas card. They were given $2000 to develop it. $750 and lots of construction paper later, they were finished. This is the Spirit of Christmas that most people have seen by now, that is most commonly downloaded. The video was sent out before Christmas to 80 people. By February, they were hearing about it through friends of friends. It wasn't long before a friend in Ohio sent them a copy saying, "You've got to see this." It was this 5-minute video which prompted Comedy Central to offer a weekly series to the pair. It is a must for any South Park fan. - What is this, "UNAIRED PILOT," that everyone's talking about?
The Unaired pilot episode is episode #101, Cartman Gets An Anal Probe, with a few extra scenes that were edited out, including the scene where Pip explains where his name comes from.
- What is this Jay Leno short that I keep hearing about?
In approximately mid-November (actual date, anyone?), Jay Leno aired a short, 5-minute episode of South Park on The Tonight Show on NBC, which featured Jay Leno coming to the boys classroom for a visit to talk about Thanksgiving, and the boys ridiculing Leno's chin. This was followed by Jay Leno getting furious, killing Kenny, and leaving the room with a chin-activated helicopter.
- What is the New Year's special?
On New Year's Eve (December 31, 1997), Comedy Central ran a South Park marathon consisting of four shows that previously aired (reruns), followed by a breif countdown of several South Park characters counting down to the new year. At the end of the countdown, the seven fell off of the date and landed on Kenny, killing him, and it was replaced by an 8. So it looks like Kenny's life is back to normal again!
10. Is there an actual city anywhere in the world named, "South Park," or is it a completely fictional place?
Yes, there are actually several small towns across the United States named South Park. One of them, South Park, Colorado, is the hometown of one of the show's creators, Matt Stone. He met Trey Parker while attending Colorado State, and the rest is history.
9. Is there any South Park merchandise available? I've heard that they are making South Park T-shirts and apparel. Where can I get it?
Many stores in local malls across the country are already carrying a variety of South Park merchandise. You can also check out Comedy Central's Store (http://www.comcentral.com/store) to find additional merchandise.
- Who exactly are Matt Stone and Trey Parker?
Trey Parker was originally a student of music. He later transferred from the prestigious Berklee School of Music to Colorado University to study film, and it was there he gave birth to his twisted brainchild, "Cannibal: The Musical". Parker not only wrote, produced, directed and played the leading role in the film, he also wrote the songs and collaborated on the score. He is 27. Matt Stone worked on, "Cannibal: The Musical" with Trey. He is originally from South Park, CO.

Section III : Character and Plot Information
- What are the main characters in South Park?
A. Stan Marsh
He is the Quarterback of the South Park Cows. He has a sister, Kelly, who wears headgear. Stan's father is the town geologist, and his grandfather is very old and wants to die. He loves Wendy Testeburger and used to vomit whenever she talked to him. He has an Uncle Jimbo, who loves guns, owns the local gun shop, and hangs out with his war buddy, Ned. Stan owns a gay dog named Sparky (played by George Clooney).
B. Kyle Broslofski
He's Jewish. Enjoys playing, "kick the baby," with his younger brother, Ike. His mother fights to keep inappropriate material (like South Park) off the air. He has a pet elephant.
C. Eric Cartman
He's fat, but he'll deny it, saying he's big-boned. Normally, he weights about 90 pounds. He loves food: Ham, Salisbury Steak, chocolate chicken pot pie, Happy Tarts, Snacky Cakes, and Cheesy Poofs! He loves them all! Cartman won a national essay contest when he cheated. His award was to be given to him by Kathy Lee Gifford. He got to be on Geraldo because he was so fat he couldn't leave the house. Eric Cartman claims to have flashbacks to when he was in 'Nam. He owns a pot-bellied pig. His mother posed for Crack Whore Magazine.
D. Kenny McCormick
Kenny is nearly impossible to understand because his coat covers his mouth. His family is poor and his father drinks a lot. Kenny has a brother. Kenny dies in almost every episode (sometimes more than once). He did manage to survive the Christmas Episode (110). He's one heck of a dirty bastard! There usually aren't any lines scripted for Kenny, simply mumbles. If you can't figure out his lines from the context of the situation, then it probably isn't important and you're not missing anything.
- What are the supporting characters of South Park?
A. Chef
As you may have guessed, he is the chef at the school cafeteria and also the school's football coach. He sings a song in almost every episode. Chef is a UFO fanatic, ladies' man, and is in love with (or has loved) Kathy Lee Gifford. Chef is voiced by Isaac Hayes. He wrote the theme to Shaft, but did not play Shaft.
B. Mr. Garrison
Mr. Garrison is the schoolteacher of the boys at South Park Elementary. He has a sarcastic hand puppet named Mr. Hat. Mr. Garrison was in a talent show with Kathy Lee Gifford and grew up bitter that she beat him. He was recently thrown in a mental hospital after attempting to kill Kathy Lee Gifford. There is much debate currently over Mr. Garrison's sexuality. He admits to not being gay, just acting that way to, "get chicks." He does have a certain, "fruitiness," to his mannerisms, though.
- Who sings the opening theme song?
Les Claypool from Primus sings the opening theme song.
- What are the lines of the opening theme song?
Les: I'm goin' down to South Park, gonna have myself a time! Stan&Kyle: Friendly faces everywhere; humble folks without temptation! Les: Goin' down to South Park, gonna leave my woes behind! Cartman: Ample parking day or night; People spouting, "Howdy neighbor!" Les: Headin' on up to South Park, gonna see if I can't unwind! Kenny: [ mumbled ] I love, . . . * Les: So come on down to South Park and meet some friends of mine! Note: Matt and Trey appeared on KLBJ's, "Dudley and Bob with Debra," morning show in Austin, TX on October 27th. Someone asked them what Kenny says and they replied, "Comedy Central would make us edit it if we ever told what it was." They did reveal that the line starts with, "I love,..." Two more popular theories on the internet are as follows, however NONE are CONFIRMED:

- Was that Mr. Hankey in the Opening Theme?
Yes, even in Episode #101 (Cartman Gets An Anal Probe), Mr. Hankey is seen bouncing around in the foreground during the opening theme. He was not officially named, "Mr. Hankey," but Matt and Trey have undoubtedly been toying with the idea of Mr. Hankey since the beginning.
- Who are the celebrities that have appeared in South Park?
Brian Boitano has appeared in Spirit of Christmas Kathy Lee Gifford has appeared in Episode 102 (Weight Gain 4000) TV's Patrick Duffy has appeared in Episode 103 (Volcano) George Clooney has appeared in Episode 104 (Big Gay Al) Sally Struthers has appeared in Episode 109 (Starvin' Marvin) Also, Jay Leno starred in a short 5 minute South Park show that appeared on The Tonight Show.
- What celebrities should we expect to see in future episodes?
Natasha Henstridge (the chick from Species) is rumored to appear in a future episode. Barbara Streisand is confirmed to appear in an episode called "Mecca Streisand," to air in February, and the premise is that Barbara -- as in Babs -- has half of an artifact. If she finds the other half, she'll be the most powerful person in the world. Well, on a field trip, the kids from South Park find the other half, and Babs is out to get it,... no matter what.
8. What are some of the common snacks in South Park (that we see Cartman eating)?
Some of the snacks that we see Cartman eating in South Park include, Cheesy Poofs, Snacky Cakes, Happy Tarts, Doogie Bars, Sweety Pops. None of these exist in real life.
- What in the @#(*! is a King Kamehamaha?
King Kamehameha was King of the Hawaiian Islands, credited with unifying them into one nation in the 19th century. He did everything on a large scale,... he weighed several hundred pounds, he had 21 wives, and many homes. What this has to do with Kyle's Mom is beyond me.

Section IV : Easter Eggs (Hidden Secrets of South Park)
South Park is loaded with all kinds of hidden little secrets, or Easter Eggs, that us viewers are always challenged to find. They may carry little or no meaning, except maybe that we find our how demented Matt and Trey really are!! Here are a few of these easter eggs, starting with the Anal Probe episode and going through the last episode:
Theme: Shelly Marsh has her headgear in the Theme Song even before the episode in which she gets them.
Leno: The thing that lands on Kenny's head and kills him is a bust of George Washington.
Most: In most episodes, the letters above the blackboard are mixed up. The lowercase letters are going in backwards order and the uppercase are going in regular order. Example: Az By Cx Dw Ev Fu,...
Most: Officer Barbrady's slogan is, "To Patronize and Annoy!"
Most: There are many instances in the school where you see posters. Some of them say:
"Hang in There" "Go Cows" "Reading Rocks" "Milk is Yummy"
#101: Kathie Lee's name is mentioned in the first episode on the blackboard. It says: I'm not positive, but Kathie Lee Gifford is older than she claims to be.
#101: The letters on Chef's apron change from lower case to uppercase in this episode.
#102: The DUCK AND COVER filmstrip is a parody of an actual film. When there was the threat of nuclear war, they made a filmstrip to tell people what to do if an actual bombing run was made on the U.S.
#102: When Ned says he's out of ammo, he laters drops the gun which shoots Kenny. How could it shoot him if it was out of ammo?
#103: The people in Mr. Garrison's dream that are in the crowd appear later in the show at Cartman's award ceremony and still later on Geraldo. How can they get around this fast and not look a day older? Simple: When making the show they just use the same people instead of just making new ones.
#103: Kathie Lee's little bubble-thingie is a parody of the Pope's, "Popemobile."
#103: In weight gain 4000, in Jimbo's gun store there is a fish with tied on bunny ears shallacked on the wall.
#103: There is nasty writing on the blackboard, in Spanish: * "Chupas mis chi chis" --> "Suck my tits." * "No me toquen mis juevos" --> "Don't touch my eggs (balls)." * "Mi verga es fea y morena" --> "My dick is ugly and dark."
#104: Brian Boitano is in the background during the Boat Ride.
#104: The numbers on the players' backs during the football game change. At one point, Kenny has the number 13. Unlucky for him.
#105: On the front porch of the geneticist's mansion, there are two more bunny-fish, but they are on two posts. One of their ears falls off.
#106: Stan's Grandpa has his birthday cake on his plate one minute and the next, its gone. Did he eat it really fast and ask for seconds?
#106: In this episode, when Stan's Grandpa is playing the music, he puts in a tape but the boombox reads: CD. Also, what is playing on it is a parody of the New Age song, "Orinoco FLow (Sail Away)."
#107: Jimbo and Ned stand ready with their guns atop a building in this episode, in an effort to kill the zombies.
#107: Chef's dance in, "Pink Eye" is a parody of Michael Jackson's Music Video, "Thriller."
#107: There is a picture of Kathie Lee Gifford in Principal Victoria's office.
#107: Note the joke in Principal Victoria's name (i.e. Victoria Principal).
#107: There is a, "Visitor Doll" sitting on a shelf in the scene where Chef and the kids are in the morgue.
#107: When Cartman envisions himself in the educational movie about Hitler, he starts sputtering German words. It's kind of hard to understand, but at the end of that he says, "goddammit!"
#107: The warning light inside Mir at the beginning has a message under it: Una Problema.
#107: When the newscaster says, "Screw those commie bastards and their wussy space station," the picture in the corner turns into a screw-shaped MIR.
#109: The scene with the Turkey's against the South Park citizens is a parody of, "Braveheart" with Chef taking over Mel Gibson's role.
#109: There is an Ethiopian Ike. Near the end, when Marvin gets off the plane, you can see him held by his mother. He has yellow hair instead of black.
#109: "Tako" sports watch is a parody of, "Seiko" watches.
#109: Every time someone looks at one of the watches in this episode, it says 4:20. This refers to pot.
#109: At the point when you see Marvin's suitcase, one of the stickers on it says Club Med.

There is the Palace Chat courtesy of Comedy Central. If you can download the special client software, then you can run it. The server is southpark.palace.com, port number 9998. There you can see visual chat that really kicks ass. You can download the client software at Comedy Central's web site (http://www.comcentral.com/southpark).
There is also an IRC channel on EFnet, #southpark, which is usually occupied by many people as well. You can download an IRC client such as mIRC and begin chatting right away.

Is my browser malfunctioning? I looked up this address, and I got the main page for the GeoCities Athens Neighborhood, not a SP FAQ. Did GeoCities suddenly change (I've noticed they do that a lot), or did I miss something?

You've got my vote. Yours is the best I have seen. If you have the deciation to keep it updated and thorough (which I think you do) I think that calling your the "official" FAQ is fine.
