I was very, very annoyed by it... instead of providing any insight on "The Passion of the Christ", Parker and Stone just made up a lie (that Mel Gibson is insane) and tried to pawn that off as an explanation of the film. Bad show, guys.

I have a feeling it was supposed to be purposeful exangerration. We know by previous south parks and "BASEketball" that they like Braveheart and The Mad Max films, and the way he was acting over the top like Daffy Duck suggests they weren't serious about it.

Anyone else notice that some gags were direct lifts from Daffy Duck cartoons. There's this cartoon ( I forgot the name ) where agent Daffy's trying to sell this performer kid ( with a big lolipop ) to talent scout Porky. Matt and Trey took scenes from that cartoon for Mel.

Let me put it to you this way: I like South Park in part for it's inclusion of incisive jabs at societal standards, practices, and norms. I *don't* watch South Park to utilize their brand of social commentary to figure out how I'm going to act. I watch it to point and laugh at the utter stupidity of many of society's rules and regulations, just like they are doing.
With regard to the Daily Show, quite honestly, it's in the same vein as South Park. It is *NOT* intelligent social commentary. It is putting the news through a ridiculous (and funny) comedic filter. To think they are making a statement is to miss the point entirely, unless that statement is "it's funny when we make fun of the news".

Do you watch anything " to utilize their brand of social commentary to figure out how I'm going to act." ? I sure don't.
Newsweek seems to think differently, what was the headline on their Jon Stewart cover? "Serious and funny", or something like that? A few days back Richard Clarke was the guest, and he thanked Jon Stewart for the intelligent way they had portrayed the controversy surrounding him. The Daily Show is *constantly* making statements, if you bother to look closely. They do it thru humor, true, but it is pretty clear what they mean. Where they stand on Bush's anti-gay-marriage policy, is pretty obvious for instance. This is not to say that they're not funny for the sake of being funny - they often are - but unlike Letterman and others there's a little bit more seriousness and thoughfullness behind the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Did you see/hear Jon Stewart's monolouge on the first show after 911? That was pretty amazing and showed his capabilities.

Personally, no, I don't. But then again, I'm not a lemming, unlike so MANY goddamn people on this planet. "If your friends all jumped off a hastily constructed ramp, would you fail the level?"
mean.
Knowing the opinions of the writers of the show are not the same as making a statement. Their intent and slant is obvious, that is true, but it is not the same thing to simply satirize something as it is to make social commentary through humor.
I reckon its social commentary. Last nights ep said things that needed to be said. Totally takes the piss out of religion. Totally takes the piss out of the passion of the christ which was a boring movie.
Most people wouldnt have even been aware of the fact that passion of christ was in the tradition of anti-semetic, hate-mongering passion plays of the dark ages, until they saw it on south park.
And just to be fair the Jews and the Germans also get their just deserts. Im glad they showed the Jews as being unapologetic for the torture of Jesus, if only for the sake of balance and fairness, of course its all just religion to me, and to me religion is just an excuse for war and hatred.
Anything south park can do to mock and belittle religous groups is a step in the right direction as far as I am concerned, and I think last nights episode criticised religion in general, and showed how people taking religion seriously can only lead to harm.
Probably one of the most socially relevant episodes I have seen.
No, the Passion of the Christ was not at all a boring movie. But, the South Park ep did help me take the guilt trip away from my mind. Christ died for my sins and the sins of the world, but why all of this gratuitous violence? The Lord lashed and beaten from head to toe? South Park presents Mel Gibson as a nut, and he may really be nuts now!
The movie wants to convince me of the blame on the Jews, but wasn't Jesus a Jew? If you want to know where evangelical Christians are on this issue, it is this: "We, humankind, are to blame for the death of Jesus on the Cross. He died for our sins, and we must all accept Him as our Savior which is the key to Heaven."
Why should Jews apologize?
Point well taken. Some of the most bloodiest wars in history have religious. The U.S. has gone insane with fundamental Christianity claiming that one can't be a good patriotic citizen without being a born-again Christian. I believe you can be patriotic and be a good Jew, good Muslim, or a good atheist. I know some Christians who are bad patriots.
Agree. Cartman did not have the Archie Bunker persona in this ep. Instead, he is a little Hitler mini-me bitch!
Integer Software wrote:

To demand an apology _now_ is, essentially, holding an entire ethnic group responsible for an act in which no living person could _possibly_ have any role. This is no more than a deranged grudge-- not much better than the ethnic grudges which tore the former Yugoslavia apart.
And it's fairly obvious that, to anti-Semites, no such apology could ever be "enough." =

There were twice as many movies made about the Holocust in the last decade than about WWII, and that considering all of the Americans who died *fighting* Hitler. http://www.rense.com/general24/kud.htm Controversial Jewish Professor Takes On 'Holocaust Industry' The Holocaust Industry By Prof. Norman G. Finkelstein Published by Verso, New York and London 4-30-2
Note: One of the most controversial books in decades, 'The Holocaust Industry', continues to cause anger and consternation among readers in Europe and America. The following are a sampling of quotes from Professor Finkelstein's (City University of New York) book:
"The Holocaust" is an ideological representation of the Nazi holocaust. Like most ideologies, it bears a connection, if tenuous, with reality. The Holocaust is not an arbitrary, but rather an internally coherent construct. Its central dogmas sustain significant political and class interests. Indeed, The Holocaust has proven to be an indispensable ideological weapon. Through its deployment, one of the world s most formidable military powers, with a horrendous human rights record, has cast itself as a 'victim' state, and the most successful ethnic group in the United States has likewise acquired victim status. Considerable benefits accrue to this specious victimhood - in particular, immunity to criticism, however justified. " (Finkelstein, The Holocaust Industry published by Verso, London and New York (2000) (p 3)).
Some further quotes:
"In an authoritative study, Leonard Dinnerstein reported: Sixty thousand Jews.. walked out of the concentration camps. Within a week more than 20,000 of them had died.". But 'As it entered into negotiations with Germany [just two years ago, in 1999], the Holocaust industry demanded compensation for 135,000 still living former (camp inmates)."
On page 83 he notes that "The Israeli Prime Minister's office recently put the number of "living Holocaust survivors" at nearly a million."
On page 127, he further notes "If 135,000 former Jewish slave laborers are still alive today, some 600,000 must have survived the war. That's at least a half-million more than standard estimates... If Jews only constituted 20% of the surviving camp population and, as the Holocaust industry implies, 600,000 Jewish inmates survived the war, then fully 3 million inmates in total must have survived. By the Holocaust industry's reckoning, concentration camp conditions couldn't have been that harsh at all; in fact, one must suppose a remarkably high fertility and remarkably low mortality rate... If, as the Holocaust industry suggests, many hundreds of thousands of Jews survived, the Final Solution couldn't have been so efficient after all - exactly what Holocaust deniers argue." (pp127-8)."
"Both my father and my mother were survivors of the Warsaw ghetto and the Nazi concentration camps.. One of my father's lifelong friends was a former inmate with him in Auschwitz, a seemingly incorruptible left-wing idealist who on principle refused German compensation after the war. Eventually, he became a director of the Israeli Holocaust museum, Yad Vashem. Reluctantly, and with genuine disappointment, my father finally admitted that even this man had been corrupted by the Holocaust industry, tailoring his beliefs for power and profit. As the rendering of the Holocaust assumed ever more absurd forms, my mother liked to quote (with intentional irony) Henry Ford: 'History is bunk.' (ibid. p7)."
"The Holocaust proved to be the perfect weapon for deflecting criticism of Israel (ibid p30)."
"Much of the literature on Hitler's Final Solution is worthless as scholarship. Indeed, the field of Holocaust studies is replete with nonsense, if not sheer fraud." (p 55).
"Given the nonsense that is turned out daily by the Holocaust industry, the wonder is that there are so few skeptics." (p 68).
"Annual Days of Remembrance of the Holocaust are a national event. All 50 states sponsor commemorations, often in state legislative chambers.. Seven major Holocaust museums dot the American landscape. The centerpiece of this memorialization is the United States Holocaust museum in Washington.. (This) museum's annual budget is $50 million, of which $30 million is (taxpayer) federally-subsidized." (p72). (This is in spite of the fact that, as he points out on page 32, per capita Jewish income in the US is almost double that of non-Jews). "With a re-election campaign looming, Jimmy Carter initiated the (US Holocaust Museum) project to placate Jewish contributors and voters, galled by the president's recognition of the "legitimate rights" of Palestinians." (p 73).
And:
"The Holocaust may yet turn out to be the "greatest robbery in the history of mankind"... The Holocaust industry has clearly gone berserk."(p 138-9).

Furthermore, no matter how blatantly obvious the pro-Israeli lobby's influence over the American politicians is, that really has nothing to do with the Holocaust and the alleged inflated number of victims one bit. Politicians respond to money and votes - nothing else. Both come from lobbies, as well as from the increasingly strong fanatic Christian electorate which seems to have done a 180 degree turn, from being anti-Jewish (the Jews killed Jesus) to being pro-Jewish (must protect the holy land so that Jesus has somewhere to return).

I thought it was pretty lame. People are defending it because it is "supposed to be humor, not social commentary", which is only HALF bullshiat. They deliberately pretended to make some points about guilt, atonement, forgiveness, etc....and purposely got preachy at the VERY end of the show (last 60 seconds) and even played melodramatic music while many of the characters "agreed" that we shouldn't concentrate on the "Passion" of Christ...the "torture and execution"...but should concentrate on love and His teachings. Then they instantly switched to and ended with Gibson farting (bare assed and SPRAYING for crying out loud) into Cartman's face!!! I think this was THEIR way of saying "screw you" to Mel and admit that they themselves suck and really have absolutely nothing truly constructive or intelligent to say about the whole issue. That's fine....just don't also pretend at the same farking time that you do have something important to say. IMHO, I think the whole thing was so offensive and rambling because one or both of the main producers/writers actually had Christian upbringing in their past. Nobody becomes that caustic and rude towards Christianity (even proxy via someone like "Mel") unless they feel they have the right to be, because they think they've "suffered" under Christian proselytizing. I'm a HUGE fan of the show, and I was disappointed, especially after the brilliant season premiere. I wasn't offended, it just wasn't all that funny. The jokes were too obvious.

Gotta agree. Retarded CARTMAN!!! was much funnier.

Heh! That was pretty funny, although more in a "I can't beleive they did that!" way than in a "Yes! Perfect! Dead on!" way, if you know what I mean.
Nothing so far has been as funny as "Invisible Cartman" "sneaking" across the stage from the season premiere.

Making a movie with no backing, and getting the thing to distribution, (itself a challenge) and THEN having a huge success all over the world, having never sold out on the premise he had from the beginning, and quoting literally from the beliefs of a major religion* which had already inspired numerous movies on the subject before, =/= insane or bad, in fact it is an artistic accomplishment and very much against the odds that a project this bold would get out there these days, especially without major studio backing.

It was a great movie that was made by a wsritier/director with great skills. He is a man who put his money where his beliefs are(which is unheard of in hollywood)and created a classic moive that will be around for a long time and he rightfully is profiting from his creation. He went up against the power elite and showed that a man committed to his beliefs can create something great that will inspire people!!

It's too bad that Mel's film has prompted so many people to worship so publicly, as the heathen do. I wish they were all praying in secret, as Jesus counseled them.

Actually, in all seriousness, I've been getting a creepy "The guy may be mentally ill, and he's getting worse" vibe for years from Mel Gibson. And this goes *way* back before his little personal passion play.
There were rumors about him being somewhat unstable going back to the 80's (into the 70's if you want to count barfights). But he passed this behavior off as the result of various addiction problems (heavy drinking, drugs, etc.). But even when he stopped drinking, he still seemed more than a little "off-kilter."
I remember seeing an interview with him in the mid 90's where he was talking about some of his on-set "practical jokes." It just gave me a real creepy vibe, even then. I mean some of his "jokes" involved leaving dead rats in castmember's trailers (actual dead rats, not fake ones) and stuff like that. Other castmembers were laughing it off in the interviews, but you could tell they didn't really want to talk about it.
Do I think the guy is a raving lunatic? Of course not. Obviously Matt and Trey were exagerrating.
But do I think that there's a grain of truth to this portrayal, that they may be onto something? You bet.

He is nuts. OTOH, maybe he's not. There are lots of people on both sides
of that issue. :-)
Judging from "Passion" and "Braveheart" a lot of people have assumed that
"a messianic character sacrificing for justice by getting really really really
really tortured" is a theme very dear to old Mel's personality. So I thought
the bits of him trying to get the kids to torture him were good satire. Me, I
don't have a problem with the "really tortured" theme, but lots of others
wouldn't agree with me. They got a right to say that they think Mel's
viewpoint is nuts.
Note that Trey and Matt were actually pretty sophisticated about the
points they were making. They did NOT argue that "Passion" was spreading
anti-Semitism. None of the moviegoers that liked "Passion" left wanting to
hate Jews. Except Cartman, and he was f---ed up already. :-) Cartman tricked
those moviegoers into saying something they had no idea they were saying. In
the meantime the Jews in the synagogue who were slamming the movie came off as
fools ( "Stereotyping Jewish people is so bad!" one guy said through his nose.
:-) I don't think Trey and Matt want to support any censorship, including the
effort to shut down the movie.
Trey and Matt apparently wanted to emphasize the teachings of Jesus over
the passion story. I think one character characterized the passion story as a
"guilt trip". I understand that viewpoint but I don't agree with it myself.
I prefer to hold both Jesus's parables and sermons and his miracles, death and
resurrection important. I believe that in Latino Catholic cultures at least
the tradition is to have crucifixes ( crosses with Christ on them ) instead of
just plain old crosses, and that the crucifixes are designed to look very
grisly. So this bloodied characterization of the passion sounds familiar to
me, it's a part of my own cultural heritage.
The thing is I haven't had time to see the "Passion" yet. I've been too
busy these past few weeks and I need to find a free weekend. So for all I
know "The Passion of the Christ" might suck like Stan and Kenny said. I don't
think Trey and Matt are right about the passion story in general, but maybe
they're right about Ol' Mel's bleeding version. :-) I'll see for myself
eventually. Matt and Trey don't want to censor "Passion". But they do want to
say that it sucks. :-) The jerks in this ep were the people who kept giving
Stan and Kenny a hard time for not liking the movie. They got every right to
think that Mel's ideas are nuts."Garrison Hilliard" wrote in message news:[email]...

film.
I can't say that this episode had NO entertaining value, but I have 3 points that I'd like to raise.
1. I think that Stan is an asswipe for thinking that he can just watch a
whole movie, and then demand his money back because he
wasn't entertained. I know that he's only eight, but if he can't tell
the difference between a George Lucas/Steven Spielberg
adventure, and the kind of movie that "The Passion" was trying to be.
then maybe he should stick to home video and stop
trying to be the Ralph Nader of movie watching.2. I guess that if there is one thing more pathetic than taking $18.00 from a pair of eight year olds, it's trying to take it from someone as pathetically insane as Mel Gibson was depicted as being in this episode.
3. I'm NOT sure what the Hell Trey Parker and Matt Stone were trying to say in this episode, but I'm getting a little annoyed with their own pronouncements of what religion should say or do.
I'm a Catholic. That is to say, I was babtized when I was a baby so, I
didn't have any say in it. I rejected Biblical mythology
when I was 11, including and especially the belief in Hell. I can
agree with alot of what South Park says, but I think that the
Catholic Church has a right to be what it is, once it takes care of
that pedophile priest problem. I think that even Big Gay Al
would agree with that since he chose to leave the Mountain Scouts,
rather than force them to include him. I've seen "The
Passion" It didn't exactly transform my life, but I think that the
reason people watch it is because they want to see the sacrifice
that Christ made, NOT because they want to see the blood, the gore, or
play the blame game with the Jews. BTW, I don't
think that the movie is the least bit anti-semitic. In times past,
I've had Jehovah Witnesses come to my door and preach how it
was wrong to worship the cross because it's like worshiping the gun
that a murderer has used. If that is their rational, then more
power to them, but no one has any business telling a Christian that he
worships the cross because he's a death lover, or what
part of Christ's existance they should focus on. This reminds me of the episode where Father Maxi went to the Vatican to
see if he could do something about the pedophelia.
Towards the end, he held up a Bible, and told everyone that they
should be preaching that we are to love God, and be good to
eachother, and THAT'S IT!. That's not an exact quote of what he said,
but it's the general sense. While I can't really argue with
that, it's a secular humanist sounding interpretation of what the
Catholic religion should be. Father Maxi may be a Catholic, but
I'm just wondering if Matt Stone and Trey Parker know any more about
Catholocism than a strict Buddhist does? One of the
main tenants of the religion is that you MUST accept that Christ is
lord, and while I admit, it's that kind of thinking that makes me
shy away from religion, it IS the right expression of what Christianity
is all about, not South Parks feel-good interpretation. I guess Stan hasn't learned anything from that time that he insulted
that Mormon kid Gary, and his family so, if anyone can think
of a reason to admire Stan's anti-religious bigotry, please post here.

The biggest problem about this episode is not about the movie at all. It's that Jesus is a character in the show, so why didn't they just ASK him what really happened? Besides, why are there Jews at ALL in South Park if Jesus is right there walking among them performing miracles. Yet they don't believe in him?
Jews beleive Jesus existed, they just don't beleive he was the Messiah. Considering that the Jesus living in South Park didn't fufil any of their prophecies, I don't think it's surprising they didn't beleive he was either.
Also, the South Park Jesus died in "Red Sleigh Down."

Poll: more Americans now think Jews killed Jesus By ASSOCIATED PRESS Special to The Jerusalem Post 12 Nissan 5764, Saturday, April 3, 2004 16:47 IST
The percentage of Americans who believe Jews were responsible for killing Jesus has grown in recent years although it remains a view held by a minority of people according to a poll released Friday.
The survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press found 26 percent of respondents believe Jews were to blame for the Crucifixion up from 19 percent in ABC News poll in 1997.
The greatest increase was among young people and blacks. Thirty-four percent of those under age 30 now believe Jews were responsible, compared to 10 percent in 1997 the Pew Center said. And 42 percent of blacks hold that view, compared to 21 percent seven years ago.
The poll was conducted amid controversy over Mel Gibson's epic "The Passion of the Christ." Some say the film unfairly portrays the role of Jews in Jesus' death, while Gibson and others insisted the movie is not anti-Semitic and is faithful to Gospel accounts.
The film, funded by Gibson, has been a big hit, earning more than $300 million. The Pew survey did not ask whether respondents believe Jews today should be blamed for the Crucifixon. But they noted that an ABC poll this year found an overwhelming majority of people rejected that view.
The Pew survey of 1,703 adults was conducted March 17-21 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

One of the best episodes they have ever done, IMHO. It is not Matt and Trey's responsibility to do anything with their show other than to entertain and make us laugh. But they sure did give us insight into the mentality of people who take what movie stars say and do too seriously.
Gibson has always been a little "off" in my book and this religious kick he's been on for the past few years is kinda creepy to me- and others, I'm sure. I don't remember people being too annoyed by what Matt and Trey did to Streisand on several occasions, especially with Mechastreisand. Just rememebr that MAtt and Trey don't give a fuck.
