South Park ... real life?

I was driving around Asheville, NC today, when I noticed two rather funny things. The first was an office complex named "ParkSouth" (I think the developer got confused when he ordered the sign <G>). The second was a park a few blocks later called McCormick Park! I almost died laughing! Coincidence ... I think not!

That's nothing! I live near a mall called Southpark. I went to McCormick Middle School. AND I have cousins named Kyle, Kenny, Wendy, and Eric. No Stan, though.

There is a similar coincidence in my town. There is a mall called "Southpark Center" near Cleveland, Ohio. (Note, this mall was built 2 years before South Park was first aired)

Yeah, Moline, IL has a "SouthPark Mall" which has been there forever. and its sister mall in Davenport, IA is "NorthPark Mall"

It's not a terribly uncommon placename. Here's what you can get from a modern U.S. atlas:

Southpark, NC Southpark, OH S Park Historic District (!), OH South Park, AL South Park Estates, AL (not in same county as above) South Park, CA South Park, IL South Park, IN South Park *and* South Park View, KY South Park, MI South Park, NJ South Park, OH (not clear if this includes S.P.H.D. above) South Park, WA South Park, WV (*two*, in 2 different counties) and South Park Addition, UT

I'd bet there's at least a few more in Canada and/or the UK and/or Australia and/or New Zealand and/or... well, you get the idea.

There's also South Park near Pittsburgh, but it's a park, not a town.

It's not just a park though, there is a South Park School district to go with it... I didn't even realize that untill a few months ago..

Well get this all, I've actually been to the SouthPark, Colorado!

I went to school at the Univ. of Colorado at Boulder. SouthPark is actually a county there not a town. But the town on the show is what the area looks like. Little podunk houses and villages in this alpine woodland area. It's neat. I'm into Americana and small towns. If you ever are in the area stop by and get a South Park bumper sticker so you can say you were there and met Cartman and pals :)
