Transcript of Opie & Anthony's (WAAF DJ's) phone call of September 18th, 1997 to Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of the new television show on Comedy Central, South Park:
(since I'm not entirely sure who's speaking at all times, I'll use "O&A" for Opie and Anthony and "SPC" for the two South Park creators..)
<end "High" by Jimmie's Chicken Shack>
O&A: "107.3 WAAF, the only station that really rocks. The latest from Jimmie's Chicken Shack, that's "High", a WAAF exclusive. It's Opie and Anthony, and uh, on the phone line, if I did this right, we got the creators of South Park, uh Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Very excited to talk to these guys. They got a great new cartoon on Comedy Central...it's actually cut-out animation...they do this with paper and scissors. And it's pretty politically incorrect, it's a bunch of eight-year-old boys, 'bout uh four of them I guess, and they curse, fart, burp, spit, say bad things, they're just nasty, like real kids. And they tackle subjects on this, on this cartoon this it's like, taboo. And off-limits to the rest of tv, basically. So uh, yeah it's on Comedy Central Wednesday nights at ten, and I know a lot of people don't get Comedy Central, so you truly got to get a friend that gets Comedy Central to tape this for you every Wednesday night. We're huge fans of this damn show. Matter of fact, those weird clips we've been playing on the show for the last month is from South park, like for example this:"
<cut to sound clip from SP>
"Go home, you little dildo!" "Dude, don't call my brother a dildo!" "What's a dildo?" "I don't know, and I'll bet Cartman doesn't know either." "I know what it means..." "Well, what?" "I'm not telling you."
<end clip, very short WAAF promo, back to Opie and Anthony>
O&A: <laughter> "Alright, so on the phone we got the creators of South Park. Matt! Trey!"
SPC: "How you doin' man?"
O&A: "What's up guys?"
SPC: "Kickin' and hangin' and <unintelligible>"
O&A: "Dude, can I call you guys 'pigfuckers' (obviously bleeped)?"
SPC: "Yeah, sure. That's cool. Yeah, thanks a lot man. Where are you guys?"
O&A: "Ah, we're in Boston."
SPC: "Oh cool."
O&A: "We are *huge* fans of South Park, we've turned all our listeners on to South Park, and it's a pleasure to talk to you guys today."
SPC: "That's awesome. Thanks a lot man."
O&A: "Put it this way: I left a restaurant last night in the middle of dinner to run home so I can watch the old man episode..."
SPC: "Cool, cool."
O&A: "It's nice to see cartoons where uh, 'Pc' doesn't even come into play.."
SPC: "Yeah that it is..what does that mean? What's 'PC'?"
O&A: "Exactly. Now dudes, there's a lot of people still don't know what South Park is all about. How would you explain the cartoon to people that haven't seen it yet?"
SPC: "Wow, it's just a show about four little kids growing up in a really small mountain town. Roughly, our childhood, but it's anybody's childhood, y'know, and remembering what it was like to be a little bastard."
O&A: <laughter> "It's true... who are you kidding? It's the 'Peanuts' on acid..."
SPC: "yeah, totally. Like on methadone or crack."
O&A: <laughter> "Now this all started with 'The Spirit of Christmas'."
SPC: "It almost started before that. We made a five-minute short called 'The Spirit of Christmas' before that 'Spirit of Christmas' that we made when we were in college...and it was those four kids, and they were fighting Frosty the Snowman, and it was like, it was just something we did for school, and we didn't really think anything of it. And then a FOX executive out here in L.A. saw it and said 'Hey, make me one, as a Christmas card to send out to my friends and I'll give you some extra dough', and we're like 'Sweet...' 'cause we like needed money desperately, so we went and made this, made 'The Spirit of Christmas', that everybody saw as a just a Christmas card for this guy..."
O&A: "And it took off.."
SPC: "That was it."
O&A: "I mean, you got Jesus kickboxing the hell out of Santa."
SPC: "Yeah, dude..and, and Santa beating the hell out of Jesus too.."
O&A: "Right, right, right. I mention that because 'The Spirit of Christmas' is being shown in Boston through the weekend."
SPC: "Oh is it 'Spike and Mike'?"
O&A: "Yeah, Spike and Mike's Cartoon Festival."
SPC: "Right on."
O&A: "But I was reading about you guys in Icon magazine, the October issue...obviously you guys make fun of everyone and everything...and there's such a cool quote here. It says: 'If it's Ok to make fun of absolutely anything and everything, but not this, then that's the thing we're going to make fun of definitely'."
SPC: <laughter> "'Cause that's when it gets offensive. To us that's when it's offensive is when you start saying 'Well, this is Ok, but this isn't'... start putting rules on it, and it, and we're sure as hell gonna do it."
O&A: "So now what kind of flack have you gotten from people?"
SPC: "Surprisingly little...y'know I think a lot of people that wanted to hate it, sorta saw it, and saw that it was just harmless construction paper."
O&A: <laughter> "Dude, I mean me and Anthony do a pretty radical show, here in Boston, we let it ourselves and go to the edge all y'know all the time, but the line you guys had in the football episode, me and Anthony's jaw dropped to the ground when Stan was running with the football, and the announcer said 'I haven't seen a Jew run like that since Poland, 1938'."
SPC: <laughter> "That took a little fighting to get."
O&A: "Oh my, dude, my jaw hit the ground, and I'm like 'I guarantee there's gonna headlines tomorrow...the special interest groups are gonna be all over these guys'."
SPC: "Well, y'know it's really funny, we've actually had the convert... we just got nominated for a Environmental Media Award for the hunting episode..."
O&A: "Ahh, that is a great episode!"
SPC: "The Gay and Lesbian Alliance called to say how much they liked the Sparky, football episode..."
O&A: "...with Big Gay Al."
SPC: "Yeah. They called and said they loved that episode. So people get the humor, y'know"
O&A: "Have you gotten offers now from big networks that want to totally tame it down but give you huge amounts of money?"
SPC: "Uh, yeah, but we wouldn't even entertain it at all, because we know that Comedy Central is the only place we're gonna be able to do what we do."
O&A: "Yeah, Comedy Central's great, except I get five spanish channels on my cable service and I can not get Comedy Central."
SPC: "I know, it is tough, and it's tough for us too because nobody in Colorado gets Comedy Central. So it's like all of our friends back home, and all the people who the show's sorta about don't see it..."
O&A: "Ahhh..."
SPC: "Which might be good actually..."
O&A: "Exactly. You can still go into the church or something..."
SPC: "Yeah, and my mom and dad don't have to see it..."
O&A: "Well, well guys a ton of people have been faxing us questions all afternoon long. First of all, the sixth episode ran last night, ah, are you guys gonna start reruns already, or do we have six more coming at us?"
SPC: "There's six more coming out, but we have to go into reruns for a little bit just to sorta catch back up, but we're actually right now working on the big Halloween special."
O&A: "Ohhhh. Well, what are some of the other subjects you guys are gonna tackle on future episodes?"
SPC: "Well we are actually gonna have a battle between Jesus and Satan coming up..."
O&A: "Yeahhhhhhhh. Cool..."
SPC: "A battle for good and evil. The battle sorta an Armageddon, final battle between good and evil in South Park."
O&A: "I hope evil wins... <laughter> because we need someone to balance the politically correct scales... There's too much good taste in this world, and it's good to see you guys out there making the scales a little more even."
SPC: "Cool."
O&A: "Very cool. And I gotta remind people we're gonna have a South Park marathon this weekend on Comedy Central, right?"
SPC: "Yeah, Friday night's the South Park sleepover."
O&A: "It starts at what, 11:00?"
SPC: "I think so, yeah."
O&A: "Hey, how close are you guys to Stanford University?"
SPC: "We, we're in L.A."
O&A: "Alright, we were asking that because me and Anthony were calling Stanford today, 'cuz Chelsea's celebrating her first day on campus."
SPC: "Oh really."
O&A: "And we're calling all the fraternity houses to see if all guys have any bets who's gonna be the first one to "foul" her."
SPC: <laughter> "Sweet! Dude, I'll take that bet...I'll drive right up there!"
O&A: "You wanna talk about a politically correct campus? Everyone is getting mad at us, and hanging up on us. Even the fraternity guys."
SPC: "So they're like 'That's so lame of you man."
O&A: <laughter> "Yeah...like the frat houses are telling us, 'That's not an appropriate question.'. It's like, you're a frat house! What the hell with...? Where else could you go to get sleazy answers than a frat house?"
SPC: "Hey, I'll go up and bang her for you guys..."
O&A: "Yeah, that's what we need. Another thing, and I know you guys are busy, and we'll let you go, but uh, last night's episode was right down me and Anthony's alley, because we're on the radio talking about how, when we reach a certain age, we're gonna uh, kill each other."
SPC: "Right, oh yeah. <laughter>"
O&A: "I'm totally serious..."
SPC: "Because you guys had bad diarrhea..."
O&A: <laughter> "Yeah, yeah, well that too, but uh, explosive diarrhea, no me and Anthony have this plan set in motion...whoever turns like seventy first, and they're in the front lawn, y'know mowing the lawn with those white tube socks all the way up to their knees, with the shorts on and stuff...the other guy's just gonna do a drive-by, and blow him out."
SPC: "That's sweet. Matt and I have basically the same plan, except it only happens when we're like, 35."
O&A: <laughter> "Oh, you guys are cool, man. I wish you the best, because seriously you guys are uh right down our alley."
SPC: "Cool, well thanks a lot, and thanks for all the support. The whole show is done when we're completely lit."
O&A: " (in stoner voice) It's like 'Dude, get some construction paper, it's time to do another episode.'"
SPC: "Yeah, totally."
O&A: "Thanks for spending some time with us, and we'll check out the, uh the sleepover, you guys are calling it on Comedy Central, what, tomorrow night at 11:00...?"
SPC: "Yeah."
O&A: "...it starts. Ok."
SPC: "Cool."
O&A: "Thanks a lot guys. It's been our pleasure."
SPC: "Yeah, bye."
<cut to another South park clip>
"Sorry to hear about your ass..." "God dammit! They didn't do anything to my ass! It was just a dream!!"
<cut to WAAF promo and then to music>
