Reefer madness

When I was in college and grad school, almost all of us in the compostion school smoked weed. We didn't sit around because we were bored, we improvizd music and wrote music out. We knew the whole boatload of bullshit about how "bad" it was were a pack of lies. e weren't bored losers just sitting around. My greatest moments were spent with an obscure old manuscript photo to study and a reefer or three.

Something did happen to many of my schoolmates. As soon as they became parents, they changed their whole act and turned into their own parents. Like this one guy who was a real Lothario, now he has a daughter and he's worried about some little minature of himself getting into her pussy.

I knew guys in high school who smoked and they were evenly divided between clowns (and plain fools) and normals. Maybe you shouldn't smoke grass until you're 17 or 18 I smoked my first one when I was 17 & 3 months, the night before my first college class -- but after that it's not your fucking business if I do.

Just tell your kids they're too young to do some stuff, like smoke anything, drink booze (except maybe a glass of wine at dinner -- that seems to be OK), drive, vote, and get killed by fuckers shooting at them in wartime. There's still a time and a place for everything, and it's called "college."

A few years ago I read an article about two Boomers with a 14-year old son -- the reason they LIED to him about drugs was because he was "afraid" his kid might start "experimenting" (like HE had done!), and the daddy was worried that he'd lose his job if his boss didn't like his personal philosophy. [THAT DOES HAPPEN IN THE REAL WORLD. You can get fired if June and moon rhyme one month. You have no job security now -- and you didn't in the '50s or '60s either -- unless you were uninized -- and still, one reefer and you're jailed for decades.] Obviously the guy was too fucking stupid to know how to talk to his own goddamned son!

I agree with Stan's comments at the episode's end, and what his dad said when he stopped bullshitting. And the kicker in the ep's end was when Stan realized they DID think he was stupid and would end up a loser if he tried a joint!

But listen to everything coming out of the mouths of the DARE assholes and the DEA. It's still right-wingers and Reefer Madness. One puff and you're addicted to heroin.

Yep, there was one of those films they showed us in 7th grade -- that stupid bald "doctor" and the story of the girl in the 1950s who will "never be the same" because she smoked marijuana. Nothing's changed! It's just slicker now. Just look at your school texts! Look at the "Drug-free zone" sign down your block! It's all bullshit!

They are not completely wrong. Most of us who try weed the first time will get addicted to other drugs. I had a friend who tried marajuana when he was a freshman then moved on to other drugs. We were best friends, i stopped hanging out with him after he became a drug addict. I know a lot of people who are that damn stupid. I think most people dont know where to draw the line, and will addicted to drugs.

You're using that word 'most'. This is bullshit, it is not 'most' people who try pot who move on to other things. In the UK surveys keep showing that about 70% of people have tried pot at some point but only about 8% have ever tried heroin. Slight difference there!

High Times was a rather silly magazine by stoners for stoners. It would once in a while have useful information, and also advocate stoners write their representatives. But way too "Seventies."

I'm far more inclined to believe that this is the type of person with a weak will and an addictive personality, who was prone to get hooked to these hard drugs anyways, and taking up marijuana was just the first sign, as was drinking beer likely was before it.

Marijuana is no more a gateway drug than alcohol or cigarettes. Pot certainly isn't completely harmless, but it is not that bad. I would say alcohol is a much worse drug than marijuana. But, one thing about pot is that it is illegal and smoking it puts people in touch with those who use other, more dangerous illegal drugs. When young people who already smoke pot and know that much of the "party line" on marijuana is just scare tactic propaganda, some are inclined to believe that what they have heard about the other drugs is false as well. That's the worst thing about dishonest scare tactics. When young people realize that government is crying wolf about marijuana, they stop believing there is a wolf. But, there is a wolf, to some extent with marijuana, and to a great extent in hard drugs. These asses in government are only making the problem worse.

That makes tons of sense. I hung around with a lot of potheads and even some acid-heads in high school, and none were as pushy as those commercials that used to pop up showing kids running away from the "scary drug dealer guy offering them pot." Most would ask if I smoked, and when I said no, shrugged and were okay with it.

This can kind of being equated with the horrible sex ed kids seemed to get when I was in school (wow I feel old! Is it any different now though?) where they preach one thing and one thing only: abstinence. They tell the kids nothing other than that, so that when they do experiment, they do it in a stupid fashion. Between that and DARE, I'm amazed I'm in one piece!

I've done acid maybe 6-8 times in twenty years. It's not for everybody. The last time it was redundant and annoying (altho' while watching "Perry Mason" it struck me that Hamilton Burger is modeled on a WWII battleship).

The thing about acid is that it will expose your concious mind to everything under the surface. That scares a lot of people. They don't like to know what they really think, or what they really remember.

One morning on KPFK I was interviewing Ray Collins of the original Mothers. We got a call (off-air) from a guy named Richard who said he had freaked out listening to "Lumpy Gravy" on acid. He said that album took all the wonderful world of "Absolutely Free" and turned it over so you were looking right up America's asshole. Then he said his mother called and that freaked him out more (guilt I guess). And so he said it took years "to put Richard back together again."

Now, was it the acid, or the guy's already-fucked-up mnd?

Absolutely right, buddy. Most people are stupid (by definition! Look up the definition of a bell curve if you don't believe me! About 50% of people are below average and 50% are above! Duh!). A whole lot of people live in denial about drugs too, just like people do about cigarettes. Case and point, my grandma is absolutely convinced that stopping smoking is worse than smoking. Facts mean nothing to most people.

I guess one of the things people learn as they grow up and get out into the real world and face the responsibility of feeding and raising kids is that it is more important to conform and live by society's rules than to stick behind one's own principles.

This is more a matter of parental and sexual instinct, even if hypocritical. Chances are he wouldn't care if he had a son who became a miniature of himself.

Those examples sound a lot like the stereotypical parents from the place I work. And those are mostly people who were having their kids too young (and in abundance and expecting that they'll still get to do the stupid things people those ages get to do, despite their kids. I've seen this so often it's not funny. Doesn't always have to be drugs involved, but I've seen where it is and isn't, and sometimes its hard to differentiate. In 1917 I was driving a medical supply route in LA. My boss was a young guy from Chicago. He's showing me the route on my first day and we're driving through just such a neighborhood in LA. I laffed and said some people considered this place a slum. He laughed ou loud too, as he knew what a real slum was! It seems that to LA people, "black" = "slum."

In West Fumerton (not its real name) we lived in a complex that was, well, a little run down. My wife's father, "the Admiral," came by once, pronounced "This is a slum!" and never came back. This from the guy who wrote about his childhood, "The seven hills of Rome cannot equal the beauty of the seven hills of Pittsburg"!
