Understanding of jokes

i have been thinking about this big debate about people understanding the jokes from SP and the more i do so the less i think that age is a major factor

instead i feel geographical location plays a major part (thats not saying that age doesnt make a difference just not as much as originally thought so IMHO)

as i have stated many times before i am from wisconsin and i have noticed that i have never heard of some shows that seem to be common place in outside of wisconsin

also each state seems to have their own launguage WITHIN the english language last year i went on vacation to arizona and california and i noticed a theres some difference in the way people talk people have different ways of saying things and often use different words (it got a little confusing because we didnt always know we where talking about the same thing)

I agree with the points you are making here. I live in Canada (sorry) and some of the jokes (not just SP) just stop at the border(going both directions). They can usually be figured out, but, you're right, its all to do with geographical location...and speech patterns.

A good example of speech patterns - the movie 'Fargo'. I just saw this movie the other day. 'You can't be serious!' is what I thought while watching it. Here's what I heard:

"Oh yah?" "Yah,......oh yah" "Yah?" "Really yah" "Oh yah, really yah?"

Where's Fargo? - N. Dakota?. Seriously, if those Dakotans come to Vancouver and talk like that, they'll be beaten senseless on a regular basis.

The annoyance and the wood chipper. I can't comment on the hockey.. I'd be hard pressed to name more than 4 teams. The only cool hockey game I've ever seen was way back a while ago, when Reagan was shot. They had a Islanders v. Rangers game, I believe, and they asked the crowd for a moment of silence for Reagan. During the silence, a fan yelled, "ISLANDERS SUCK!" and a riot ensued. Now that, my friend, was some good damn hockey. :-)

for instance everything my grandma says ends with "yeah hey" but seriously i dont know anyone middle age or under that really has much of an accent (except for the infamous hick accent)
