The "Fighting the frizzies....tonight at 11" anchorman bit is spoofing the news link that preceded the opening part of the "Star Wars Holiday Special", which was broadcast only *one* time back during the Thanksgiving weekend of '78 (note the SW-esque logo after the first commercial break with the starfield) and has been circulating as a bootleg for years (I got my copy at San Diego Comic-Con back in '94, you see. Apparently, so has Matt and/or Trey).

The Astaire-esque postman singing the Mr. Hankie theme is pretty fuggin' obvious, don't you think? <g>

Doing a little math, I'd say that Matt & Trey were both about 6 years old when that aired on TV, that one single time back in '78. I saw it on TV then, but it disappeared completely about 5 seconds after the damned thing aired. Lucas and his gang want absolutely nothing to do with it, and the only way to see it is to get a bootlegged copy from someone who had a Betamax back then...

Today, I think I'd pay dearly to get a copy of it, so I can see Carrie Fisher sing again! It was so horrible, so terrifying, you honestly have to see it to believe it!

Haven't watched it for a while, but as I recall the quality was weak.

Nevertheless, a deal COULD be made...

is is possible for me to get a copy made, please (with sugar on top?)

Don't forget the horror-show of Bea Arthur running the cantina in Mos Eisley, and MARK HAMILL WITH HEAVY EYELASH MAKEUP!!!!!

Yeah, Bea Arthur and Art Carney as part of the Star Wars mythos? Hooohaaa!

Of course, this was the first place that Boba Fett made an appearence...

And the last time Harrison Ford would ever take part in a TV production (exept for the time when Lucas *FINALLY* talked him into doing just one more appearence as Indy Jones to help bolster the ratings-starved "Young Indiana Jones" series).

I saw that and almost coughed up a lung!

I have a copy of that god-awful piece of trash, thinking about it gives me the creeping horrors!

I was thinking that only a handful of people would even get the joke.

Thanks Matt and Trey for drudging up such painfull memories!

Somewhere in LA several months ago, Matt & Trey were brainstorming ideas for a new XMas episode to shut the suits at Comedy Central up for at least another year before they were pestered to do *another* holiday special. Matt or Trey came up with a gag based on one of their favorite bottleg videos, the "Star Wars Holiday Special".

One of them said "Dude, no one's really gonna get the joke. It's too obscure."

The other one said "Yeah, but f*ck em. WE know what the joke is. Let's do it."

"I'll bet you they won't", said the first one.

"How much?"

"huh?"

"How much you wanna bet?"

"Okayyyyy....how's fifty bucks sound."

"Dude, we're not exactly working at a pizza joint. Grow some balls".

"Okay dude........how's a full GRAND sound, Mister Tough Guy?"

"Done!"
"Done!"

Several months later, the episode airs, "Frizzie Guy" and all. One of them starts to grin, thinking that he's gonna make an easy grand.

After it airs, they scope out alt.tv.southpark for the results. Amongst the posts, there's one titled "For those who did'nt know......", revealing to all what the frizzie joke was all about.

"Pay up, dude!" one of them smugly sez.

Several days later, the residence of furplay is damaged by an explosion caused by a parcel that arrived via FedEx later that week.

LOL!!!! Really clever. I'll bet your little scenario isn't too far from the truth.

Loved this one. Hope Matt or Trey personally responds to you, because this one's a keeper. :)

It should also be noted that this was from the broadcast seen in New York on WCBS, I've got a great copy of this special, and I would never thought this would be used. I'm going to have to take on of my off-air video recordings and find a good stinger to use to get people surprised at, like the "Fighting the Frizzies" tag.

Did that feature a song called "Bells" as sung by C3-PO? I think Craig Kilborn played a bot of that soundtrack album on the Daily Show a year or two ago. Or was the Christmas album completely separate from the Christmas special?

To answer all 3 of your posts at once......

As far as I can tell, Threepio did'nt have any musical numbers in the TV special (I guess Tony Daniels' lawyer was better than Carrie Fisher's).
