Timmy a major regular now

So, Timmy supporters and haters, what do you think of Timmy's inclusion in the new opening credits? The way he is shown there indicates to me that he is now considered one of the major characters, the others being Cartman, Stan, Kyle, and Kenny, of course. Even Butters doesn't get listed in the opening credits, nor do any of the other kids or adults.

My heart sank as I noticed that.

At least they're fleshing out the character a little bit.

But I still think that he doesn't add anything to the show. And I find the political correctness of the character to be jarring and very much at odds with everyone else on the show.

It is clear that Timmy is here to stay, like him or not.

I didn't like Timmy at first, but he's starting to grow on me. Although, he does have the potential of getting really old really fast. I don't think it will be long until he becomes as vocal as Pip is now. (Not counting next weeks episode)

I don't think he is supposed to be funny (like a clown?!!!...heh heh) just to be funny and entertain you. He's just another main character now. Sometimes he'll be funny. Other times not. Sometimes he'll just be there. imo

Kyle's jewish, Cartman's fat, Kenny's poor, Butters is socially inept, Timmy's retarded. It's part of what makes Timmy Timmy. That's why it works. The PC thing to do would be to imply that Timmy would be better off without his handicaps, and have others attempt to nullify them. But without them, he wouldn't be Timmy.

Like him or not, he's in your face, and how you deal with it says alot about who *you* are. I accept him as just another kid.

For example, all the other kids get made fun of by the others, called names, etc. Yet, everyone is so caring and supportive of Timmy, always looking out for him.

Very out of character and very unrealistic for little kids to do, IMO.

And he's always shown in such a warm and loving way, unlike the other kids, who are frequently shown as the bastards little kids can be.

I find the difference between the way he is portrayed compared to the others to be very annoying and, it seems to me, to be a repudiation of one of the most basic tenets of the show- ie. that there is nothing that cannot and should not be mocked.

You're forgetting that the adults are largely oblivious to Timmy's condition, out of just plain ignorance. That would leave any value judgement on the other kids' part entirely up to them, with no notion that they should treat him any differently. Besides...since when does the gang act like typical 3/4th graders?!?!? More often than not they're more mature than the adults. Which kinda makes that last sentence of yours moot. The other kids don't have a problem with him because he doesn't have a problem with himself.

Ok, here's the thing. Timmy is cool. Plain and simple. Making fun of him would be like making fun of James Dean. Normally I'd agree, I hate the idiot is bliss stereotype. I can't explain why he's cool, he just is. And that's why he's cool. (Why do I feel like Kurt Louder all of a sudden?) He's the Mona Lisa's smile of South Park. Or the Whistler's Mother.

And if you think his parents weren't a jab the mentally handicapped, you need your head examined.

Not at all.

For example, when the kids are worried about making communion, they not only worry about Timmy (only Timmy), but they ask the nun and priest about him in an effort to save his soul. (Kyle worries about himself. Even Stan doesn't worry about Kyle.)

For another, when they are planning to moon the new teacher, they make special provision for Timmy to be able to do so with them.

And so on. It is a running part of Timmy's involvement in the show that the other kids are constantly looking out for him and protecting him in a way that they don't do with one another. Very pc.

I don't think that you have understood what I have said up to this point.

I am saying that the kids don't treat him as they treat one another. And I find the difference to be annoying and intrusive and at odds with, as I said already, the basic tenet of the show, which is to make fun of everything and everyone.

I remember reading somewhere that M&T liked that The Kids In The Hall movie had a character called Cancer Boy, because even a dying kid came in for his share of abuse. When Timmy comes in for his SP share of abuse from the other kids, I'll change my opinion.

Actually, after Timmy was laying there, I was hoping for another "moving" sequence (as in "have you done the right thing with your life" from earlier on)! Maybe a pan to a few of Kenny's deaths would have made a wonderful counter-point to the touching scene!

I just hope they get more and more politically incorrect with Timmy, hate to see his character get too flat!
