A girl jumped off the building on a univeristy campus. Why? Because she had been a student all her life, and the next day was Graduation Day. She could not imagine life not being a student, having to live in the outside world.
Why some people have committed suicide
now you're just trolling.
amy holden: "you've got a weird thing for canadian melodrama." banky: "i've got a weird thing for girls who say aboot."
This is a true incident, related to me by someone who worked in counseling and knew the case. This is the reason the girl gave for her ATTEMPTED suicide. She survived but was fucked up for a long while.
I still say that a lot of reasons for people trying suicide are LAME.
How about this for a reason....
Many of you know that I'm disabled (for those who don't know, I'm a quadriplegic and paralyzed from the shoulders down) and I went from the hospital almost straight to college. BIG MISTAKE. But ppl convinced me that it was best for me and like a idiot, I went along with it. I'm not blaming them, I'm blaming myself.
Well anyway, after several semesters at college, depression was really getting to me and I wasn't doing anything about it. I'd look around campus and saw what I should have been. Namely, able bodied young ppl in the prime of their college life and ENJOYING it. Not me, though. I could see the way they looked at me as I rolled from class to class, building to building. It was almost pity or close to it and I hated them for it. What happened to me could happen to them in a heartbeat and they were completely unaware of it.
It was so unfair. People don't realize how hard it is to be in a wheelchair and know that you'll never ever walk or "be normal" again. I've heard all the talk about a cure for paralysis, but it'll never happen in my lifetime. I used to watch all the young ladies on campus, wearing shorts and tee's, and would think that they'll never like a cripple in anything other than as a friend. College is a time for indulgence: drugs, booze, sex. And here I was, unable to do any of it! I wont elaborate on all the sexual frustration that I go though. Minors read this NG, but you can get the idea.
To move along, I kept going to college, working up through the courses and my grades were dropping. I was close to failing out of a community college and falling deeper and deeper into depression. I tried to shrug it off like I always did. My childhood was a lonely time, but that's a COMPLETELY different story and I wont go into that here. Finally, the pressure of college and my disability got to me in a really big way. So one day when my mom would be away for several hours, I typed my suicide note and swallowed about a hundred muscle relaxers.
The next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital. I was told one of my lungs had collapsed so I was on a respirator for a week. Then, I was told that I had been in a coma for three days. I had no idea. Well after I was released, I sought out help and was in therapy for three years. All this was in 1993-94, btw.
Now, here in 1999, I'm out on my own, living a few blocks from my mom and step-father and having a pretty good time at it. I don't work or go to school or anything, but that's ok, I'm happy most of the time. I really don't believe that you can be happy ALL the time.
I wrote this to share why some ppl might want to attempt suicide and as a reminder to myself of how far I've come in the last few years.
If any of you are contemplating suicide, PLEASE seek help. Talk to a family member or a friend or a teacher. If you feel that you can't go to any of those, you can go to Yahoo.com and type in "Suicide Hotlines" and get a long listing of services. Please make use of them. Chances are, there will be a Hotline in your area, usually toll free number.
Life can get better, it may not be the next day or next week or next month, but it'll happen if you want it to.
dave.

Dave, very happy you're still with us. 'Hope you continue feeling well. To all, life does suck, but consider the alternative:-)
There must have been something going around in 1993-94. I was very depressed in 1993 and was out of work for 5 weeks. Used up my sick days early in 1994 and was docked 28 days for the additional time I was out (a nice little pay cut).

I can easily sympathize with you. Your body's kinda messed up. It's people who just whine and cry in their beer who piss me off. I know several disabled people -- blind, afflicted with cerebral palsy, missing limbs, etc. -- and they don't whine about it. Actually, I edit a newsletter for an advocacy group ("Champions") and that's how I met them. The group as a group doesn't like whiners, especially that group for the blind that encourages people to be helpless (NFB?). We also don't think much of Braille's attitude towards it's users. "Nice little helpless people, stay that way."

Your statement baffles me. AFAIK, Braille enables blind people to read. You seem to be saying that this somehow degrades them. I don't want to invalidate your opinion; I just want to understand it. Since I'm not blind, the answer is not obvious to me. Please explain what you mean.
Ya know what I find interesting, the new Mc Donalds commercial. This kid is at McDonalds reading a braille menu then orders a happy meal. No mention is made of the braille menu so how are blind people supposed to relate? But the enigma of it all is at the end. There is a message in braille above the Mc Donalds logo. It's not like a blind person can read it so what's the point? Guess it's just one of those things...
The point is that blind people have sighted friends and relatives, and these friends and relatives can now tell the blind that Braille menus are available at McDonald's. Until this commercial aired, they were not available for the blind. Indeed, instead of asking their friends to read out the menu, the blind can now read it for themselves. That no mention is made of the menu during the commercial means that no one should make an example of the person's blindness.

Actually, there have been braille menus at Mc Donalds for years. About 8 years ago I worked at a Mc Donalds when I was 16. Crappy job, but that's a side note. Anyway, they did in fact have a braille menu. I remember checking it out a few times. So, braille menus at Mc Donalds aren't a new thing.
Ah. Then the commercial was made to make others aware (or remind them) that Braille menus exist at McDonald's. I'm sure a lot of blind folkgo in there without knowing the menus are there. Now, when you saw a blind person approach the counter, did you offer the Braille menu?

Ya know, now that I think about it not once while I worked there did a blind person come in. I mean, I'm sure they did, but never when I was there. Maybe I smell..... hehheh. Oh, best thing about that job. When I was there ya got one free meal when you worked. burger, fries, and a drink. Well, after closing when no one was watching we could make whatever we wanted. I remember making a triple decker cheeseburger with bacon. Then filling the bottom of my bag with McNuggets and fries. Putting the burger, wrapped in a big mac wrapper, on top. Then taking it all to my friends so we could feast and smoke hash. It was fun. :o)
Workplace theft is fun.

Being a cynic, I think it's more of a feely-good move than anything else.
Anyone remember the ads form the mid 80's with the 'tard who was working at McBurgers? It always made me laugh because I knew it wouldn't be like that in real life.
I know a few blind folk. One never learned much from Braille because right off she didn't like their 'tude towards keeping blind people dependent on The Braille Institute. She doesn't like being talked down to and patronized, which is what the old ladies who work at Braille do. Another friend was asked to not come back to Braille because he didn't act like a 4th-grader being told how to get in line, to keep quiet, to put up with bullshit from other people, etc. Hey, that's it! Braille Institute treats their "customers" just like 4th graders!
I'll e-mail the guy and ask him to write up his opinion of Braille Institute in his own words. He also has some choice opinions on NFB.

I didn't know that Braille was an organization. I had always thought that it was a language, like shorthand or morse code. Are all Braille books printed by the Braille Institute? Do they own an exclusive right to the use of the Braille language?
Thanks for the info, D.G.
Damn! I know a fine woman who goes to NFB meetings.Poor woman. I was part of Braille Institute for a few years, but it wasn't anything like I heard it was in the 1970's.

It's sad, and it makes no sense to me how someone can feel there's nothing worth living for.......
I personally have a chronic illness that is very painfull to live with day to day, I've had it 4 years and I've been VERY depressed many times, but I've always felt that "tomorrow" could be different.....of course in 4 years it never has been, but it COULD be......
I just hope that anyone who feels there's nothing worth living for will take a look around them first, there's PLENTY to live for and it WILL get better.
Please, if anyone feels like Mary Kay apparently did, get help from someone. A friend, a family member or your family doctor.
This year, I've lost a woman that I loved and cherished for 25 years, my mother has been on life-support since March, and I've lost two wonderful cats to cancer. But I'm sticking around. I've been to the point of suicide myself several times, but in the end, I just refused to give in and give all the destructive forces within and without the satisfaction of me destroying me for their entertainment.
For all appearances,Mary Kay would seem to have had it all, yet, for whatever reason none of us will ever know, she was hurting..and felt that something was missing. For whatever reason she chose to end her pain.Such a decesion,I'm sure does not come easily..it's sad...but her pain is over.I hope that she found the peace that she so wanted.

"Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson
Whenever Richard Cory went down town, We people on the pavement looked at him: He was a gentleman from sole to crown, Clean favored, and imperially slim.
And he was always quietly arrayed, And he was always human when he talked; but still he fluttered pulses when he said, "Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked.
And he was rich -- yes, richer than a king -- And admirably schooled in every grace: In fine, we thought that he was everything To make us wish that we were in his place.
So on we worked, and waited for the light, And went without the meat, and cursed the bread; And Richard Cory, one calm summer night, Went home and put a bullet through his head.
Hey people,
Sorry to say this, and I truly respect your thoughts and all or any losses that you unfortunately had to endure.
I had a best friend that died a year and a half ago, and quite honestly, I don't really wanna be chattin' 'bout it in alt.tv.southpark. Can we PLEASE give the death talk a rest?
Best Wishes,

Amen to that. My grandmother died just this past summer, and all this death talk is making me think of that whole horrible, horrible ordeal my family and I went through. I wish to remember my grandmother the way she was when she was alive, not when I saw her dead in her hospital room, and certainly not how she spent her final minutes on earth.

This song, and all the posts I've read lead me to believe that Mary Kay commited suicide because she was stretched too thin. She finally popped, like a balloon, from all the pressure in her from all the commitments she had to various television shows and movies. As a report I read today said, she lost control of her life. I'm sure she had all the hope a person could ask for, but no longer had control over her career. She lost her anchor…

That's just speculation. If it's true, I would have to say that if anyone finds their career overwhelming, the thing to do is end your *career*; not your life. There are many possible careers but only one life.
I wish I could have some of the "extra" years added to my life from people like Mary Kay who through big chunks their lives away. I think that life is too short as it is! To get everything I want out of life, I would need to live to be 300 years old, and remain in relatively good health for all of those years.
That's creepy...
