Another reason for people not to keep GUNS in their homes.

D.G. Porter said...

Never mind the fact that the CDC report released this week states that gun-related deaths (homicides, suicides, accidentals) are down some 21% and gun-related injuries (nonfatal) are down about 41% in 1997 as compared to 1993.

Keeping guns in the home is not the problem. Keeping guns *properly* in the home is the problem.

Why shoot someone when you can beat them with a big stick and inflict pain? But yeah I'm completely ANTI-gun in homes.

Actually, I don't think it's an "age" thing, but rather a "need" thing. And it seems to me unlikely that a 12-year-old could have the need.

I had a rather shitty childhood/adolescenthood/present time so I felt rather justified. The day I tried it, I had called my mom to get me out of school cause I couldn't take taking people's crap anymore that day...I did that alot in school. Faked sick to go home. Like the movie "Ordinary People", the Timothy Hutton character attempts suicide and one of the EMT guys says "vertical cuts, he was serious". How'd he know to make vertical cuts? I've always envisioned the cuts were horizontal, i.e., across the wrist; but what do I know?

I think the blood would flow faster if you cut more of the vein. Kinda makes sense. KyleIke13~ (http://kyleike.8m.com)

I think it has to do with the fact that if you cut more of the vein, it prevents the clotting.

The way I heard it, slitting your wrists vertically instead of horizontally allows the blade to get between the tendons of the wrist (instead of crossing the tough suckers) and increases the likelihood that the blade will penetrate deeply enough to hit an artery. If you just go horizontal at the wrist, the blade can't get deep enough to do sufficient damage to the blood vessels, unless you have a really sharp blade, a really strong cut, or the wherewithal to saw at the wrist tendons.

tirya piped up with....

Going down the arm (vertically) opens up more of the vein/artery, therefore making clotting a problem because of the amount of area of the vein/artery open. If you were to go horizontal, the cut would be only a small slit, therefore clotting is alot easier. One way to go horizontal and prevent clotting is keeping your arm immersed in water. This is commonly shown on TV and movies where the person will climb in the tub and slit their wrist. How do I know this? One of my roommates in college tried slicing his wrist and he went horizontal rather than vertical. Why did he do it? His girlfriend broke up with him. The college sent him home and arranged for consouling with a doctor in his hometown.

I believe this was a preferred method for the Romans (for those not macho enough to fall on one's sword). The water is also warm/hot to encourage blood flow. There was a reference to this in "The Godfather, II", among others. The description was something like "get in a hot bath & open a vein".

Bill Lynch

PS: The those who explained why vertical and not horizontal, I understood the reasons when I heard it - just hadn't occurred to me before.

Not only that, but the small slit is also alot easier to repair in surgery (if required) than a long slice all the way down.

I don't think that's a constant. Probably depends on the total volume the person has, general state of health, can the body maintain blood pressure, etc. (probably a bunch more which I can't think of).

If you find it morbid, why don't you just kill the thread?

Bill Lynch

William LynchRobert Geen

There's also the issue of clotting, and the long cut helps here. The amount of the blood flow probably depends more on the cross section of the vein than the length of the slit. The bigger veins contain smooth muscle which will clamp shut if severed. I don't think a long cut is very effective in the face of medical treatment, They'd just clamp it at the heart end of the slit and repair or replace with a graft.

This is all hypothetical, right, gang?

Maybe they were the thoughtful types who didn't want to eat a bullet so the family would be spared the job of scraping brains off the ceiling? Many have said suicides are so selfish, here's someone showing some consideration and they get called "wimps". No pleasing some folks.
