CNN defends South Park against Islamist death threats

For all those who believe that CNN is a liberal propaganda machine, consider last night's segment where Anderson Cooper abandons the leftist Party line by daring to criticize Islamist extremists who have issued death threats against South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker.

Back in 2001, South Park aired 'The Super Best Friends Club' (episode 68) which portrayed various religious figures - including Buddha, Krishna, Jesus, Mohammed, and Joseph Smith - as comic book superheroes. At the time, there was no controversy over Mohammed being depicted in human form.

However, after the famous Danish cartoons caused Muslims around the world to riot and kill, depicting Mohammed in human form became taboo, which inspired Matt & Trey to do a two-part episode challenging this taboo in the two-part 'Cartoon Wars' episode (1003 & 1004). In the end, Mohammed was depicted by a 'Censored' bar, followed by assorted offensive anti-xian blasphemy, flag desecration, and so on, to illustrate how free speech applies to everything except criticism of Islam.

So for the two-part 200th episode that aired last week, Matt & Trey decided to revisit 'Cartoon Wars,' bringing Mohammed back, only to be forced to cover him with 'Censored' bars, and eventually disguising him as a sports team bear mascot. The first part ends in a cliffhanger which hints that Mohammed's face will be revealed in the next episode.

Now Islamists have issued death fatwahs against Matt & Trey, telling them they will be killed if they dare to show Mohammed's face. Comedy Central is put in the uncomfortable position of either complying with terrorist demands by forbidding it, or allowing it on free speech grounds and risking the lives of its employees.

If CNN were really so liberal as rightards accuse it of being, it would side with the Islamists, since leftist liberals are strong advocates of laws that criminalize 'hate speech.' By siding with Matt & Trey, CNN not only shows it supports American values of free speech, but also risks the lives of its own employees by standing up to Islamist extremists.

This has become an outright culture war between the civilized world and the Cult of Islam. Are we going to let these ragheaded lunatics dictate what we can show on our own television programs? If we give in, we lose the war.

The difference is that depicting Jesus with any particular appearance does not cause the artist to be killed for blasphemy. I attended a Marilyn Manson/Slayer concert a few years ago where the most outrageous anti-xian blasphemies were uttered, crucifixes defiled, bibles burned. Outside xian demonstrators condemned the performers, 'prayed' for the concertgoers, preached at them, got into shouting matches with us devil-worshipers, and yet at no point did I ever fear for my safety. Had it been a koran that was shredded and burned instead of a bible, I have no doubt that Islamists would have bombed the concert.

While I'm not trying to defend xianity in any way, I can't understand why leftists see it as such a threat while ignoring the much greater threat posed by the Cult of Islam. Xianity really has very little influence in the modern world, while Islam is growing at an alarming rate, infesting Western nations and attempting to subvert our values of freedom and tolerance and return us to the Dark Ages.

But the passage that forbids the depiction of Mohammed is one that is familiar to you, from the Ten Commandments. "No graven image". It's why most protestents are leery of the iconography of the Catholic Church, and why some sects forbid images or statues of any kind.

Note that Jesus was once teased with a coin showing a graven image of Caesar, and lettering on the coin indicating he was divine.
