I'm not that big of a fan. Why do DVD owners get to buy it and us "old fashioned" VCR owners have to make Ballbuster Video millions by renting it??
Not only THAT, but how much of the movie will Lackluster leave for us to watch after it's finished snipping and clipping? Eight or nine minutes???
I've got a computer, which means that I can get a DVD-ROM drive for cheaper than that. Office Depot has a DVD-ROM drive for $99

I just checked a catalog and saw plenty of PAL VCR's but not DVD's. You folks use PAL, right, or is it SECAM? I always get that confused. But being digital in source, it ought to be the same cost.

Nope. NTSC it is. A lot of UK DVD players tend to run "region 1" (US/Canada only codec) DVD discs as well as Europes region codec, which may be why they cost a bit more.

Sorry Bud... But this post is inncorrect in all respects... The UK runs PAL And UK DVD players can only play region 2-6 discs.
They need chipped, or software fixes, or remote codes to be able to play region 1.. not *all* of them do AFAIK.
(Some PC DVD drives give a fixed number of region shifts... after 5 or 6 they LOCK on whatever it is on at the time!)
Almost the same dif. Even the US-sold players usually don't have region selectability.

That's nothing. Here in Australia your cheapest DVD player is going to set you back $699 (approx. US$445) and then you have to pay to get it modified so it can play discs other than Region 4. It took me a lot more than 30 hours to save up for one I can tell you.

Dude, some people don't have the money to just get a DVD player. It took my family about 15 years before we finally got a CD player for the house, for crying out loud.

It comes out on DVD at the same time as rental VHS In a couple of months it will come out on retail VHS

Its all a ploy by the video industry to get people "hooked" on DVD to release it the same day as its available to rent and for less money. And since the film did not generate enough $$ at the box office (Dont know why - its the funniest damn movie I've seen in a long time), the studio (Paramount) needs to recoup its $ by pricing out to Rental first then reducing to Retail (also known to industry as sell-thru)-it will probably be available around Feb/Mar if it goes through the normal process.
I'm just as bummed as you are-I really want to own this! But I will wait....sigh.
