Is it just me, or have there been just waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many insipid little fights in this newsgroup? What's going on in here? Sure-we all have our differences in opinion, and in Usenet one is free to pretty much say whatever he or she wants but honestly, what happened to respect around here? Respect, civility, understanding? It seems like every time someone voices out their opinion someone else, who happens to disagree, comes along and insults them. A flame war ensues until somebody ends up in a killfile. It doesn't matter if the opinion is regarding a big issue like religion, or something ridiculous like whether or not a certain reference in the newest episode is from "Aliens" or "The Phantom Menace". Many of the posters in this newsgroup have been acting in the same way- like immature, childish jerks. Please people- can't we all be civil and respect each other's opinions? Can't we learn to disagree and discuss without the insults, the name calling, the sarcasm, and the belittling and condenscending nature? Thanks.

Furthermore, outrageous behavior can be _depicted_ without necessarilly being condoned or encouraged. An example of this is All In the Family. Or do you object to All In the Family also?

BTW, the most "unpleasant" characters on South Park are not the kids but several of the adults: the emotionally unstable schoolteacher, Mr. Garrison; the inept cop, Officer Barbrady; the loud-mouthed schoolbus driver, Miss Crabtree; Ned, the sadistic hunter, and probably a few others.

Well, yes the Brady Bunch newsgroup would be rather worse than this newsgroup due to the truth spewed by Greg Brady, who claimed that he had sex with Robert Reed(the dad), Florence Henderson(the mom) and Marcia. Having shared some semblence of a family within the show for so many years and then sharing sexual relations with them must have warped their fragile littleminds and the major fans of the show. Apparnatly, Bobby and cindy lost their virginity to each other and Jan and Peter shared relations, so it was some - quasi-incestuous faux-family time. I have seen pornos that weren't that bad in taste.

You're right. It seems that with the recent release of the SouthPark movie, controversy has arisen everywhere, including this newsgroup. Combine a controversial issue with a bunch of new arrivals, some apparently here simply to stir up trouble, and you've got a newsgroup that's out of control.

I look at it this way. A certain percentage of newsgroup posters will be fools, and with the recent influx of new folks, the number of fools increased. Toss is a veteran "Holy Troller" and a few personal issues that should have remained in private e-mail, and you've got the state of a.t.s today.

Oh, I don't think it's the insult, I think it's the manner of the insult. I've recently killfiled several people who have attacked me personally for having the audacity to disagree with them, especially when they are patently incorrect and I was merely pointing it out.

Life's just too short to waste on people like this. I can still read and respond to the posts of the dozens of other contributors, so it's not like I'm missing out on something earth-shattering by choosing to ignore certain individuals. They can continue to treat the newsgroup in the manner they wish, and I get to wash my hands of them.

I'm doing my part. There are now 6 people who's flame inducing posts will never show up in my newsreader, and this should decrease the number of off-topic posts on my part. Now if only others would take the cue, and simply ignore the people who's posts seem to rub them the wrong way, we can all get back to talking about the TV show.

I've yet to contribute to this little religious flame war, so I figure I might as well. Edwina, did you take into consideration the fact that Toni ALSO watches South Park? Yes, she does! Oh my! And she also happens to be a regular at the newsgroup..and an extremely cool, smart, kind, and rational person I'm reading replies that you get from your posts and I can understand why you consider the show a bad influence. Anyone who dislikes it's humor and then saw it's fans act like this would feel the same. However, I like to think that I and quite a few friends of mine are different. I have made most of my online friends at this newsgroup. None of them are like the people who reply to you-they understand the real meaning of what little message South Park gives (for when, pray tell, did comedy EVER give that much of a message?). The people in South Park who are inconsiderate, racist, and rude usually meet a bad end or, by the end of the episode, learn some form of lesson. There is always a message. The creators aren't going out and saying that we should legalize drugs and have wild sex and insult everything under the planet. At the end of the day, they're usually saying just the opposite. As for religion, I was agnostic for a long period of time until I started learning more and more about Wiccan religions (and no, I do not worship Satan or sacrifice babies or drink blood, or <insert stereotype here>). Through that system of belief, I've found many good things and many wonderful people. I do have religion in my life. I don't place everything I have on it, but I don't place everything I have on anything else, either. In summary, religion is not the only answer, but there's a lot to it if you have faith in it. And not all South Park fans belittle other's opinions and treat each other completely without courtesy. If you look at South Park from another angle, it preaches entirely against that. One particularly good character is Chef, the school cafeteria cook. The kids know that they can always go to him with their problems. Also, Kyle and Stan have shown compassionate sides in many episodes. All four characters accept one another as friends despite their differences.
