for all you computer savvy folks out there. If you can't access a newsgroup, but list it in the NG line of your post, will it still end up there, or will it just disappear into netspace? Just curious.

I won't appear, because your ISP doesn't carry it. Outlook Express says it "can't resolve" the newsgroup, and so won't post it anyway. If it DOES manage to get to your ISP, their server will go "What?!?!?!" and delete it.

Whenever I post my fanfics, they usually appear in alt.tv.southpark.creative, even though my ISP doesn't have a.tv.sp.c yet.

Technically, because usenet is just another big network like our favorite internet, it shouldn't matter. I think that newsgroup lookups are theoretically like DNS tables, each ISP have a bunch, but not all, domain tables.

Don't worry if you couldn't follow that -- neither could I. :)

DNS - Domain Name Server. It's basically the way an IP address can be recognized as a domain name.

IP - Internet Protocol Address. Every server's got one, and they're each unique. An IP address takes the form of 4 numbers (0-255) strung together with periods (kinda like a newsgroup name). There are rules restricting the use of some numbers, but there's still enough combinations left to go around.

The DNS is simply a way to translate "XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX" into "www.whatever.com" or, in the case of Usenet, "alt.whatever.whatever".

Bottom line:  If you want a newsgroup your ISP doesn't carry, send them
an e-mail.  It's like cable companies, if they get enough requests to
carry a channel, they consider it.
