Has anyone else wanted to just start singing along out load in BLU or is it just me? Especially when Cartman start singing KMBFB and says, almost to the audience "Come on kids, you know the words!" I can really see this movie becoming the next Rocky Horror. Though I'm not sure if there's anyone out there who can take on T&P's roles. (At least I hope not!)
Is BLU the next Rocky Horror?
I sing along with ALL the songs (that will teach me to not to get the soundtrack a week before the movie comes out)!
I'm in agreement with Eric. I never got into the Rocky Horror bit (and yes, I have seen it complete with audience participation). But I can see everyone singing to Kyle's Mom is a Bitch or It's Easy M'Kay!

It's me, too. However, I don't like to compare SP:BLU to Rocky Horror. I saw Rocky Horror just once and didn't care much for it.
SP:BLU, however, is a masterpiece that I'd love to see again and again, and sing along to its great songs.
I suppose if I were to go the the theater dressed as one of the characters it would probably be Cartman, simply because I have the same first name as him. I also had a similar experience with aliens but I'd rather not go into that.

RHPS is still packing fans into theaters 25 years after its release. In terms of 'cult classics', forget the same ballpark, SP:BLU isn't even playing the same sport as Rocky Horror.
Besides the popularity issue, the movies themselves are hardly comparable. It's one thing to sing along to the songs, but the essense of the Rocky Horror experience involves all of the audience participation lines that are spoken (or yelled) in between the dialog on screen. RHPS was written in a style that afforded many many pregnant pauses, which made it a great candidate for what's later been termed "the Rocky Horror treatment" (renamed the MST3K treatment in recent years); ie. talking back to the screen for the benefit and amusement of the other viewers.

We could yell! I mean really, it's not that hard. :) RHPS and SPBLU are two differant movies, yes. But, RHPS was done so long ago...and I think the newer generations want something to call their own. Anyways, I play to own a movie theatre in the future and I'll show SP. :)

You stole that line from Pulp Fiction. :)
I thought Showgirls was supposed to be the next RHPS? I did RHPS in NYC and we had a few weekends where they were trying to push SG as an audience participation movie.I failed horribly, lasting only three weeks. I can go with BLU being a cult/midnight movie, but not along the lines of RHPS. They are two different kind of films. BLU has done way better than RHPS did when it released.
It succeded as a midnight show with a live cast. When it started, people came to get away and be free and accepted. There was the curiosity of the late night picture show, because nobody could see it unless they went down to the theater. Remember, Rocky was released on video in 1990, for it's 15th anniversarry. Anybody can see a SP episode, or knows about it. RHPS has too much in it to be downed by BLU. Singing along is one thing, making props, costumes, learning the blocking, memorizing the movie, etc. I see that extremely difficult to pull off with BLU. I love both films anyways!
Oh, yeah. They renamed it "HOgirls", didn't they? That movie is virtually unwatchable. I felt so, so, SO horrible after watching it. Not because I was morally violated (hey, I watch SP, after all), but because the film was a piece of crap.
I don't see how anyone could do any type of audience participation, unless that involves the scene where Elizabeth Berkely cries out, "I AM NOT A WHORE!", to which the audience screams out, "AND YOU ARE NOT AN ACTRESS!"
Peace, Vince Yim

What's so hard about getting a simple devil costume? You can buy devil horns and tails in any costume shop.
And it can't be too hard to make your own Mr. Hat puppet.
Dressing like Kenny can also be pulled off. All you need is an orange jacket and parka.
One could also dress as a midget in a bikini, but they would have to actually be midgets. (At my height, the only way I could disguise myself as a midget would be to amputate both of my legs, but I'm not quite that big a fan.)
As for audience participation, use your imagination! There are _lots_ of opportunities for audience participation in SP:BL&U. For instance:
People can bring little Ike dolls to throw for the scene of Kyle kicking Ike through the window. A football can be decorated to look like Ike.
When the salt is dumped on Kenny, people can throw salt at the screen.
During the scenes when Cartman is getting shocked, the theater projectionist can flicker the theater's lights!
People can also bring enormous cardboard "dildos" to take out during the Hussein & Satan bedroom scene.
Just before Terrance smacks Brooke Shields, an audience member could say, "Smack her for me!"
When Conan O'Brian jumps out of the window, the entire audience could all yell in unison: "Oh my God! He killed Conan! You Barbarian!"
When Stan & Kyle yell "Big Gay Al! Big Gay Al!" the movie audience could join them.
During the scene when the boys silently mourn the death of the Mole, audience members can shout out a question, such as "What's inside of Cartman's head?" To which, Kyle, onscreen, would yell "Shit!" (Or was it Stan? Forgive me, I've only seen BL&U 4 times so far.)
I could probably come up with more ideas if I had the script in my hands. I hope the script gets published.
-other creative audience participation ideas snipped-
It's a nice scenario, but it will never happen. Whereas with RHPS, it's happened in hundreds (thousands?) of theaters every weekend for the last 20 years. Literally millions of performances. Considering the SP "audience participation" idea is still just a concept, I'd say it's a hell of a stretch calling BLU the heir apparent in the 'cult classic' category.
Honestly, BLU is the hot thing at the moment, but 20 years from now it will be long forgotten by all but the most hardcore SP fans. If you look back at the fads and trends from 1979, you'll see that not many of them still flourish 20 years later.
Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go dig out my old "Fritz the Cat" video.

Hopefully this thread will not decay into a "which is better BLU or RHPS." I should have stated that BLU has the potential for audience participation LIKE RHPS. It (BLU) is not a replacement. A poor choice of words on my part.
I was mostly wondering if other fans of SP would get upset if some one sitting next to them start singing along to the movie. From what I have seen this wouldn't be a problem. (I frankly don't care about the non-fans)
Anyway in addition to singing along two of my other favorite participation points are:
When Kenny's Mom berates Kenny for not going to church and that when he
goes to
Hell he can answer to Satan I like to reply along with Kenny "OK!" The other is after the Mole gives his view on being careful I like to
respond with Stan
(or was it Kyle?) "Man, that kid is **** up!"Thanks for the replys.
Thanks for clearing that up. It's pretty difficult to compare the films anyway. As for audience participation, I think one of the main reasons it works for RHPS is because much of the basic dialog of the film is innocuous and unoffensive by nature. The yelling out of obscenities to fill the spaces and alter the meanings and intentions of the movie dialog is a huge reason for the popularity of the movie and the stage show that usually accompanies it.
Example: (Bear with me.) Before Brad proposes to Janet, he utters a line that goes, "Oh Janet... I really love the... skillful way... you beat the other girls... to the bride's bouquet."
Anyway, the pregnant pauses (a RHPS trademark) allow for the audience to 'complete' the line:
"Oh Janet... (sit on my face and wiggle!) I really love the... (Starts with an 'S'. Say it asshole!) skillful way... (What a f*cking genius!) you beat the other girls... (With whips and chains!) to the bride's bouquet. (Yeah, that too.)
This turns a harmless phrase into a censor's nightmare. That's part of the essense of the Rocky Horror experience. A total corruption of innocence. Now, on the other hand, SP:BLU is essentially a filthy movie from the start. Sure, there are still ways in which the audience can participate, and there are many moments within the film where a line or phrase can be yelled out that would alter the affect that the writers intended, but I just can't see it taking off.
You also speculated as to whether other movie goers would either appreciate or be offended by yelling out extra lines, and I would say it's a toss up. Some people would ignore what you're trying to do, and just consider you rude for doing it, others would laugh along *if* the line you inserted truly was clever or funny in some way. Now, if half the theater, in unison, yelled out lines that accentuated the dialog, or made it funny in a way that Parker and Stone hadn't intended, well then, I think that would be received differently. It would be better received, more accepted even by those not yelling the lines.
I'm getting tired, but there's more to write on this subject, so I'll just respond to your next response.
Dave (hoping there's a next response. This could be a fascinating
thread.)

dumb children with no parental supervision, and access to a hammer. The urge to start singing is really hard to resist. The most I actually did in the theatre was scream out "YOU BASTARD" after Kenny gets ripped apart by the doctors. I was kinda humming along to KMIABFB, but the thing is that people tend to get upset when I get loud during a movie (last time I did that was during Batman & Robin...but that wasn't because I liked the movie).
Dressing up as Terence & Phillip wouldn't be too hard. Just come in with blackened eyes, a big black stripe representing the flip-top head, and your first initial on your shirt. I wanted to go see SPBLU on Canada Day (Jul 1) and dress up as a Canadian (first initial on shirt, head splits down the middle, blackened eyes), but I couldn't get anyone to go with me.
Peace, Vince Yim
Yes, yes it is...LOL I'll just live with people staring at me while I sing in the car =D
The whole row I was with the third time started singing along...LOL!
