"Elian" Episode

I know this episode was a while back, but I just found this newsgroup. If you will remember, on April 22nd the whole world watched the most famous 6-year-old get taken from a Miami home and returned to his Cuban father - over and over. This occurred on a Saturday and by Wednsday SP had aired their take on the whole thing. I thougth that was pretty quick even if they had already had parts of this episode made or written.

It seemed to me from watching this episdoe that Matt and Trey weren't so sure who was to blame in the whole Elian thing and wanted to distribute as much blame around as possible. I can't remember a more satirical episode of SP.

One more thing, did anyone notice that the song that Kenny was "singing" on stage in Romania was from Don Giovani? Well, that is also the tune for the Cuban National Anthem. That can't be a coincidence, can it?

I hate to correct you, but the aria Kenny is singing on stage in Romania was the "Queen of Night" aria from Mozart's "The Magic Flute." Right composer, wrong opera...

They may be Mozart fans, but I think the connection here was Cuba. :)

I can just see, next time the religious right starts screaming that SP is unredeeming trash, someone's gonna mention that the Elian episode got all kinds of people interested, at least briefly, in classical music or opera.

You are probably right, but it still is the Cuban National Anthem. :)

Since we're on the subject, if you'd like the tune that Kenny sings while "Busing" it to Europe; it is "Mi Belle e' Mobile" (or something close to that) from Verdi's "Rigoletto."

But that episode was more than that. Yes, they were blaming the US, but they also were blaming Reno for her commando raid in the night as well as the Cuban/Romanian government for exploiting the children/Elian. Not to mention the media/Southpark kids for turning the situation into profitable scheme.

That's a good point. Elian was nabbed on Saturday morning. There had to have been some previews on thursday and friday that did not meniton elian.

I remember reading that the SP parody of the Elian matter was completed only a couple of hours before it was uplinked to the satellite for broadcast ... they busted their butts on that one.
