Boycott BestBuy

I went out today shopping for SP: BL&U. I go to my favorite BestBuy, a big mega-electronics store for those of you who have not heard of it. I have always found good deals there, etc. Well, I get there and there are NO copies of BL&U on the shelf. Did they sell out that quickly? I ask the manager. Here is his response:

BestBuy will not be selling the South Park movie.

HUHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They sell the TV episodes and the music CDs, but won't sell the movie????

I asked the manager about this point and he said they were told not to buy any because the movie was vulgar. I told him it was rated R and I asked him why all the other R-rated movies released recently were available but not this one. He repeated, "BestBuy feels the movie is vulgar and we will not sell it."

I understand that the store can sell only those products that it wants, but when I can buy copies of what is basically soft-core porn in the movie and software sections of the same store, how does this excuse fly? I just thought you all would find this interesting.

This experience was at the BestBuy on Central and Park in Dallas, TX.

Sounds more like the buttheadedness of the manager more than any corporate policy.

I called my local Best Buy (Syracuse, NY) and they have the DVD, priced at $24.99.

If you are looking for the video you will not find it. It is currently being sold priced for rental at a retail of almost 105.

So wait and buy it when everyone starts to see it, right now no-one is.

If you want to DVD, it is selling for about $25. And I have seen it almost everywhere, Including Best Buys.

After reading your comments, I guess I was hit by the a-hole manager who wants to think his opinions apply to the whole company. Oh well, but he still made me mad enough to rant on Usenet about it.

Dude, Given this happened it Dallas, I'm not a bit surprised. That area in general has always been a bizarre hybrid of weirdness. You are just going to have to get it somewhere else. Not everyone bible is tightly belted there.

Here's an interesting thing I noticed on Amazon.com the other day. Their R-rated videos carry the notice "Not for sale to persons under age 18." Fair enough (though how they tell over the web is beyond me...maybe they're psychic?). Now look up "Orgazmo" there. They sell two verions. The R-rated version is not for sale to persons under 18. But they also carry the Unrated version -- presumably more vulgar -- and it does *not* carry such a warning. Of course, most of their "unrated" movies predate the ratings system (all the Marx Brothers films I've bought there, for instance) and would probably be rated "G" today, but they might want to pay a little more attention. :)
