I cannot believe how f&^king gullible you newsgroup people are. There's a huge buzz about the supposed death of Mary Kay Bergman on this newsgroup. People, I'm asking you to think. For just one minute, think.
1.) Why has Comedy Central not posted something on their page about Mary Kay? 2.) Why does every single reference to "Mary Kay's death" somehow point back to www.wackyvoices.com? 3.) Does it strike you as odd that NO reputable news source has anything whatsoever on this? No CNN. No Time. No People. No legitimate internet newsgroups. Nothing in the papers. Nothing on TV. 4.) Do you know what the word pseudonym means? 5.) Do you remember the Terrance and Phillip special last April - "Not Without My Anus"? 6.) Does it seem conceivable to anyone that this is a joke from <HELLO?> the creators of one of the most politically incorrect, Black Comedies that has ever been on TV? 7.) If she passed away almost a week ago, why is there no mention of her death anywhere in ordinary media? Anywhere?
Read the "Bio for Mary Kay" once again, and this time use the other side of your brain.
Something doesn't add up here. On the one hand, her bio contains a link to www.wackyvoices.com, which says she is dead, and several posters claim to have received a similar message on Delete Me First or heard the story on MTV. On the other hand, the rest of the media has said absolute squat about it, and the Comedy Central bio reads "Oh my God! They killed Shannen! You bastards!" and talks of the mystery woman [actually, her identity, but they don't quite say it that way] being "put to rest."
If Bergman's death is a hoax, that's pretty sick and the mainstream press should freport it as such. If it is not a hoax, the mainstream press' failure to report it is inexcusable, and Comedy Central's failure to remove the offending material is unforgivable.

The stuff on the Comedy Central bio about "They killed Shannen," etc., quite obviously refers to Mary Kay's decision to be credited as herself rather than the pseudonym "Shannen Cassidy," and was up long before Mary Kay's tragic passing.
True, Michael, but Jeff's point is well taken. If Mary Kay really has passed away, then they absolutely need to get rid of the "Oh My God! They killed Shannen!" part. I understand that it could have been up there previously, but leaving it up is completely inexcusable, if she is really gone.
And don't give me this, "Well, everyone is still in shock, and..." Fine. IF she's really dead, then they don't necessarily need to post a fancy obituary, but they DO need to get rid of that message which would obviously offend anyone with any sense or taste.
Oh, and I also can't get over, "Well, it just happened, and..." No. From what "ev'erbody sez," she died either on Thursday or Friday. That's almost a week, folks. How long does it take your IT department to issue a delete command for one page? And are you honestly going to tell me that nobody at Comedy Central (in the higher echelons) thinks that leaving that message there is in bad taste?
I'm in no position to debate that MTV did indeed run a story. But is MTV what you would consider to be a RELIABLE news source?
The few seconds before and after tonight's episode should prove enlightening, I should say.

If they were trying to keep it a secret, they wouldn't have revised www.wackyvoices.com. This was a case of sheer incompetence. Even if they weren't sure whether the rumors were true, they could at least have reported *that*.
By saying nothing, they led a number of readers, including yours truly, to believe the whole thing was just another cyberhoax.
No kidding... I missed class Monday cause I was hunting for a source to let me know whether it was true or not...I was up till 2:30 in the morning searching.
Yeah, Jeff, that made NO sense to me, either. They took the time to re-write her site to post a quickie announcement, and even took the time to write couple of scripts to handle a message board complete with archives. But outside that, they didn't tell anyone that she really had died. Not for almost a week.
Yes, we did have the MTV story and the one that ran on anotheruniverse.com. But for nearly a week, that was it, and most folks need more than that to confirm that someone famous has passed away. Especially with Mary Kay, as big as South Park has grown to be.
Nobody handles death well. But to change her professional website and then not tell anyone else that she had died, that's just screwy priorities. Ok, they wanted messages. They wanted love and support from friends and colleagues. Fine, I can completely understand that. But without a formal announcement, it fully appeared to be a hoax.
I assume there are those out there who remember when DeForest Kelley "died" several years ago, and there were so many messages "In Memory Of" that it damn near crashed the server? That was a hoax, and it was perpetuated in much the same way: One single reference, and most "official" stories after that eventually referenced back to that single point of relative "truth". (Kelley, of course, died for real in June 1999.)
Mary Kay's death is a sad fact, and her talent will be missed. Even more sad is the way that the actual details of her death were given out to her many fans, in small portions here and there. It did appear to be a genuine hoax, and that's awful to her memory.

"I listen to the soundtrack of Bigger, Longer and Uncut while I'm in the office. Usually I just can't help laughing," one fan wrote, "but today, I can't help crying...You will be remembered forever."

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The actress who gave voice to the quirky women of the South Park cartoon show has apparently killed herself.
Voice actress Mary Kay Bergman, 38, of Venice, Calif., died from a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head Nov. 11, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Department.
The case "is finalized and we have concluded that it is a suicide," said Scott Carrier, the coroner's representative. "There's no criminal negligence on anyone's part."
Officials gave no indication as to why Bergman had become despondent.
Two suicide notes left
Bergman left behind two farewell notes, said Detective Mike DePasquale, of the Los Angeles Police Department, Pacific Division. "It's a straight suicide," he said. "Case closed."
Bergman, whose versatile voice brought life to regular South Park characters such as Mrs. Cartman, Sheila Broflovski and Wendy Testaburger, is survived by her husband, Dino Andrade. He discovered her body at the couple's Rose Avenue apartment around 10 p.m. last Thursday and called police.
She had been dead "no more than three hours," DePasquale said.
Internet tribute
In an Internet memorial tribute to Bergman -- www.wackyvoices.com -- dozens of people from around the world have posted farewells to the late actress, recounting a successful career that spanned from the profane South Park to roles in pious Disney films such as The Lion King, Mulan, and Beauty and the Beast.
"You were, and did, all these things, and far far more than I could ever write in a single evening," Andrade writes on the memorial site. "But the single most important thing of all, even beyond your amazing career ... you were my loving wife for nine of the greatest years of my life."
Show goes on without her
Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the duo that created the South Park show and voiced its male characters, were too upset to issue a statement about Bergman's death, said Sharon Levy, the show's publicist.
"They're mourning privately," she said.
Meanwhile, the Comedy Central network's South Park series, which was made into the successful movie South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut over the summer, will continue production without Bergman.
No replacement for the late actress has been found yet, but the audio for several forthcoming episodes of the show has already been recorded, Levy said.
this is what confuses me. half of the stories write that matt and trey are too upset to discuss the situation and the rest include a line from a statement that is attributed to the two. this just further makes me wonder about the length of time it took to report the story and when some of these stories were written.

Well, then. You don't know the difference between a statement and a discussion. A statement is just that, a statement. Nothing follows it, no questions are asked after the statement is made, and the speaker usually leaves after the statement. If the statement follows a question, then that one question is the only one allowed. If the speaker wanted to talk further about his statement, he would stay behind and entertain (more) questions. That is a discussion. So, yes, Trey and Matt gave their statements concerning Mary Kay's death, but they didn't want to say any more than they had to.

I will now cite a list of RELIABLE sources that will confirm the loss:
1) Her website doesn't just have the message. It also has a message board. There are about 10 pages of messages where people are mourning her, including close personal friends. Coincidence? No.
MTV News ran a segment.
3) Comedy Central has confirmed about 5 e-mails members of this newsgroup or my mailing lists have sent, as well as made a mention of it in the SP Digest. Call them if you don't believe it.
4) She's a voice actress, and thus not widely remembered, stupidly enough. America makes me sick like that.
5) Terrance and Phillip is not only different, but Trey and Matt vowed to never do something like that again. If they did, they wouldn't use something like this. They have TASTE.

I'll say. As someone mentioned, Payne Stewart (someone who is truly irrelevant compared to Mary's contribution to the human race) gets buttloads of coverage because he was rich and wound up in a luxury buzz-bomb, but all we get is scraps of info at best (and have to dig for it ourselves).
There seems to be a list of people the "media" demands that we worship (like the time we were all supposed to wail like handmaidens the day John-John Kennedy did a "John Denver"), and then there's the treatment for the rest of us, that when we die, the media goes "Hmmmph....yeah, like who cares?".
Yeah, really. Animation voice artists are the most underappreciated actors in Hollywood, and it's sad.
I mean, it's bad enough television and motion picture academies don't even acknowledge animation voice artists as true actors. Many voice artists actually do better acting than the live-action actors. Yet the live-action actors that perform in animation that get the true acknowledgement.
(Quick, answer this . . . who was the voice of the third hyena on The Lion King that wasn't Whoopi Goldberg or Cheech Marin?)
Television voice actors get lackluster treatment as well. I mean, when it comes to animation voiceovers categories on the Emmys, the voices with well-known faces like Louie Anderson get the awards (which surprised me that my boy Rob Paulsen won for Pinky and the Brain at this year's Daytime Emmys). I mean, actors like Mary Kay, Trey, Matt, Don Messick, Dan Castenella, Nancy Cartwright, Julie Kavner, Yeardley Smith, Tress MacNeille, Frank Welker, Maurice LeMarche, and countless others could have easily gotten at least a nomination for best actors/actresses in a comedy series for their works.
And even though the media will crawl all over a celebrity's (or quasi-celebrity ala JFK Jr. or Princess Di) death, they always fail to talk about deaths in the animation industry. Mary-Kay was just the latest, but in the past three years, the world also lost Don Messick (the original voice of Scooby-Doo), Mae Questel (the original voice of Betty Boop and Olive Oyl), the original voice of Cruella DeVil, the original voice of Snow White, the co-creator of SchoolHouse Rock, Ted Wolf (creator of Thundercats, Silverhawks, and The Comic Strip), Lee Gunther (one of the producers of GI Joe and Transformers), and a lot more.
Animation always get a brushover in the media, often saying in response to industry deaths, "Eh. They weren't REAL actors anyway, so why would anyone care?"

Doris Grau... She died in 1996 I believe...I just found out this year...all that I know she did was Lunchlady Doris on the Simpsons and the makeup lady on the Critic... That stung me the way Mary Kay's death did...
