Respond and they win. EVERYONE at sometime thinks they have a devestating flame to knock the wind out of the Trolls sails, but it doesn't work. A Troll wants one thing. Responses to a ludicrous post. Well, in response to that Arthur guy, I actually thought he had something to say until he responded to my response and it was pretty clear that he didn't care what I had to say.
I agree. People, we've gotta stick together-those who have pledged, those who haven't had the chance to yet, and those who are newbies. We've gotta try and not get tempted to respond to troll posts. Quite often, their threads end up being extremely long, containing replies from those who just have to respond to it in some way or the other. Responding to their thread means you've given them exactly what they wanted, and they love that.
In addition, remember that trolls can come in all shapes, sizes, and ages. Although usually trolls are a bunch of stupid teenagers (I mean no offense to non-troll teens, BTW) who post mindless drivel, some are actual adults who crave the same attention as their younger counterparts and make posts that are more complicated, wordier, and more critical. Some of us may then try to reason with such a troll (right Hiro Protagonist? <grin>). But it won't work.
Reason, threats, and smartass comments will NOT, I repeat, will NOT work on trolls. Period. They will not "see the light" and suddenly understand South Park, their feelings will not be hurt if you insult them, nor will they be so embarrassed by the smartass remarks that they'll never show up again. Just ignore them, put them in your killfile, and move along your merry way. If you don't have a killfile then please download one.
Oh, and one more thing......
Joe- and everyone else who pledged, for that matter- quick question: Does ANY sort of post, even those that are replies to responses to the original troll post, count as responding to the troll post? It should, shouldn't it because it still adds on to the thread, and those who have killfiled the troll may still see the original post from the people who responded to those who responded to the troll. Do you see what I mean?
Ditto. I used to read alt.music.nirvana frequently, but the sheer mass of trolls drove me out. We never had any sort of pledge there, so flamings ran ramapant. People, we don't want that to happen to this group, so just leave them alone and they'll shrivel up and die.
Hmm...Good question. Sometimes, though, SOMEHOW useful conversation develops out of troll posts, what with other people changing the topic and all (although this at times is quite rare) and moving on to subjects that are relevant to SP but have nothing to do with trolling. I think it would be OK to respond to something like this (a troll post-turned-cool discussion) but instead of keeping the subject the same as it was when it was a troll post, it would be a good idea to change the subject....sorta like, for example, "Cheesy Poofs" was RE: "I Hate South Park". Or something like that! :) AARGH! Am I making sense? I didn't wake up until a little bit ago, so's I'm a bit groggy now! :)
What can I say? I thought for a moment that he actually had something intelligent to say, until he made his response to my response and made it clearly obvious that he didn't actually care what I had to say (it was like he didn't even read what I wrote).
But, you gotta admit, trolls are trying to get a "you-dick-head-why-do-you-come-here" kind of response...I don't do that.
(besides, I was on a comics newsgroup, where some guy said "How sad that you're reading comics at you're age." I wrote off an e-mail about several comics that are not for kids and only adults would appreciate, such as Maus, The Watchmen, Kingdom Come, etc. Turns out he was only writing the e-mail to guage people's responses because he was writing a paper about it for his psychology class.)
Yeah.....I mean, you're not one of those people who just write supposedly witty one liners to insult the troll....I used to do that....actually, I used to go after trolls with a vengance. Now I fight them in a different way :)
Hmmmm.....being a psychology student myself, I'm wondering if what this person did is within the ethical boundaries of the American Psychology Association....I mean, if he did, did he reveal his true intentions afterward?
Ahhh, just a higher CLASS of troll eh! (Never mind people, one day, when SP takes it's rightful place next to Billy Shakey-spear and Francis Pork...BACON!!! (Sorry) We too will have psychologists analysing us for our every thought about the legendary SP. (Not that they don't already, but for the wrong reasons!)
