Crab people piss me off!-spoilers

Ugh, I'm disappointed with last night's episode. The whole Queer Eye for the Straight Guy bit was great, but what in the hell was the point of the Crab People? I'm sure that it was homage to some bad horror movie or something, but it just didn't make sense. I got the strong feeling that Matt & Trey just ran out of ideas and went with the stupidest possible plot arc to finish the episode. I liked Garrison's anger at not being an outsider, I loved how Kyle and Garrison both decided that they must kill the Queer Eye guys, I loved how Garrison went to talk to Chef about it, I loved Mr Slave splatting on the window, but god-DAMMIT! did the crab people piss me off. I've been trying to think of what would have been worse than crab people, and even Jackovasaurs would have been better. Come on, I mean come on, crab people? What kind of shit is that?

I liked the part where they dressed up Kyle and Mr Garrison like Crab People. They were trying to say something about our society. I think the Crab People can represent any fad, and people will go to great lengths to make people conform to the fad, no matter how bizzarre and random and inhuman it may seem at first.

Waaaaaay too many episodes in the past couple of seasons have involved some stupid science-fiction gimmick of this type. It's OK once in a while, but the fact that they rely on it so heavily suggests to me that they're just sick of doing the show. Maybe their next project should be a "Battlestar Galactica" revival. :P

Some of us Doctor Who fans think the "crab people" were a reference to the Macra, crab-like villains in "The Macra Terror", a Doctor Who story from 1967 that only exists on audio today. The Macra hid themselves from the public eye, taking over society from within, making everyone conform to a lifestyle that - well, when I first heard of metrosexuals I was reminded of the humans in that story. You spend your day doing musicals, baking cakes, shopping, getting yourself beautified. With the party atmosphere, they were mentally unprepared to be subjugated, mind controlled, and used to mine dangerous gas to feed the Macra. The Macra were 3 feet tall, 8 feet long, 6 feet wide, and had some physically prowess, but humans not under their control could fight back pretty easily. Crab people. The Macra. Cosmic co-incidence, or sneaky obscure reference. You be the judge.

The BBC announced last month that Doctor Who would return as a weekly TV series in 2005, so if my theory is right this would have been the perfect time to sneak in such a reference. It turns the "crab people" from being a weird concept out of nowhere to something clever.
