No shit. There's nothing quite as awful as Failed Hipness. These guys may think they're being all clever and ironic by being total cheese, but it don't fly. I don't think I've ever seen a show try as desperately to be so 90s and fail so miserably. Hey, Comedy Central Programming dudes, give us back-to-back South Park, like the Fox weinies used to do with the Simpsons. Don't make us gag on this Viva Variety crapola!
I totally agree...Viva Variety is, in my opinion the worst show on Comedy Central...Last night, after SP was on, Viva Variety came on, and unfortunalty, I didn't change the channel...(my sister wanted to watch it, and I was busy doing my homework) but, MAN that Johnny Bluejeans...what a dork....Mr. Laupin, and the former Mrs. Laupin...TOTAL CHEESE! Did you see her dancing with the "Swimsuit Squad...ARGH!! Stupid, stupid, stupid...Back to Back SP would be great----OR ANYTHING but Viva Variety...Hey, I'd even be happy if they'd stick Win Ben Steiner's Money on!

Speaking of VV, if they censor South Park to hell, how did Comedy Central allow Viva Variety get away with the phrase "Chicks with Dicks" like on last Wednesday? Just wondering.
If you're talking about Dick Sargent or Dick York or Dick Armey, that's okay. (BTW, there's a professional race-car driver named "Dick Trickle." I wonder if he has friends named Mike Hunt and I.P. Freely.)
I still cannot fathom that one. You would think that someone with the last name "Trickle", whose parents were cruel enough to name him Richard, would choose to go by Richard, Rick, Rich or ANYTHING but Dick...

How could I forget? Then again, it's on at 2:30, which is right about when I get home & I do, of course, have to watch ESPN News since I only catch about 5 minutes of it in the morning. So Kids In The Hall usually gets bumped, but a good show nonetheless.
I agree with ya... that show is soo stoopid!! they were better on that other show... The State!!! -I think... I have even seen the cast members in person!!!!!!! :) at a book signing thing.
I'd watch Viva Variety before I'd watch the Critic. That is the worst parody show I've ever seen. What I hate about it is it screams, "Look at me. I'm funny!" Well, it's not!
If you mean the Critic, the cartoon show with the round little SNL cast-off... I kinda liked that show too. I thought it was too bad they took it off the air, it had a cynical sense of humour you don't see much.
Comedy Central used to be pretty good when they had shows like MST 3K, Politically Incorrect, Monty Python's Flying Circus, and SCTV. Now, they have horrible shows like Viva Variety, The Critic, and lousy movies which they call Mastercheese Theatre. South Park is the only decent show on Comedy Central right now next to watching reruns of Soap and Absolutely Fabulous. I wouldn't be too surprised if South Park will leave Comedy Central just like MST 3K and Politically Incorrect did because the progammers at Comedy Central had made bad judgments in dropping those 2 shows which continue to be doing just fine on other networks (MST 3K on The Sci-Fi Channel and Politically Incorrect on ABC). My guess is a network like Fox would try to get South Park and run it alongside The Simpsons and King of the Hill. Don't be too surprised if that happens because Comedy Cental has screwed up before.
What the hell made "Mystery Science Theater 3000" such a great goddamn show in the first place? NOTHING! Its a stupid, stupid show that tries to be cute by picking apart movies that they don't like. They try to be all hip and cute with their little comments, and fail. Its a weak show, and im glad that Comedy Central canceled it. Its a pity that the show was so stupid, since Joel was a funny guy. I have seen his stand up act and it was great. Are people that desperate for entertainment that they have to watch a show that has people watching a movie and making dumb jokes? This show paved the way for the assholes that I have to put up with when I go to a movie theater and hear little jokes. Its hard to concentrate on a film when some jerk off in back of you keeps making comments like "MAN!!! That death scene was DOOOOOPE!!!, look at the titties on that bitch!, yeah dick you better run, HA!!! That kid bit it good!" Screw MST3K and screw its current viewers.

MST3K is the best show on TV right now (yes, even better than South Park, although it is a close second and my favorite adult cartoon). I'd rather watch it than all those dime a dozen sitcoms elsewhere and other assorted junk, let me tell you. At least the 90's produced one truly great TV show.
I HAVE seen the show and its fucking terrible. I have seen the episode where they made fun of "Time of the Apes." I have seen the episode where they made fun of "Bride of the Monster" and the short "Hired!" I know about Dr. Forester, Frank, Joel, Tom Servo, Crow, Gypsy, Cambot, the Magic Voice, and the older scientist who used to be on the show and wear a green outfit. I have seen a great deal of MST3K and I used to love it. It was only recently that I actually paid attention to the show and thought about it. And its weak. The invention exchanges are funny, but the rest of the show is just pathetic. Its like those movies that you just LOVE when you see them for the first time. But when you actually give it thought, you have it because of how lame it was.
And as for that Joel qoute, is it that hard to "get" people making fun of a B film? Don't try to be clever, because your not.

A lobotomy can do that to a person. Enjoy your "Melrose Place". And it was the riffing that attracted me to the show; if my first experience with the show had been the dopey-looking guy and his cheap robots, I might not have become a fan.
Anybody can make fun of a movie. It takes talent to make it smart and funny, and to be able to keep it up for nearly 10 years.
Hope you enjoy "South Park", because it's one of the few shows I find as funny as MST3K. I mentioned "Melrose Place" because it's the antithesis of MST3K -- vapid and catering to the masses.

Nice AW quote, as per your parents conception product, you are living proof. Just because a person doesn't get the humor in a show, he feels he has to berate the show and its viewers. The show (MST3K) was very funny. They also covered a wide variety of topics in their shows. A special aired on Comedy Central, went through the process of making the show, and one of the cast stated, you're not supposed to get all the jokes. Assuming you didn't get at least one of the jokes, hey turn off the TV. As far as MST3K causing people to talk in theaters, had to laugh out loud at that one. Why do you think there were ushers, since the beginnings of the movie theater experience. Why don't you direct your passion and energies, into something useful- go clean up a park, feed the homeless, or just remind your mommy to keep giving you your medication.

I used to think the same thing, that Fox would be able to deliver South Park to a national audience and give it the fame it deserves. Of course, that was before I heard Kenny say "Well, did ya stick it in 'n' make it shake till goo oozed out of it?" on the Valentine's Day special (according to pm, anyway). There's no way that's getting on Fox.
The Simpsons are relatively sexless and King of the Hill is certainly toned down from Beavis and Butthead. If SP ever got on a major network, I'm sure the network would insist on editing certain Kennyisms out of the show. Comedy Central, on the other hand, will let SP get away with damn near anything because they're so desperate for a hit.
What does all this mean? That I'm convinced the show should stay on CC for a while longer. At least on this ghetto cable channel the creators of the show have a chance to give us a show as raw and funny as South Park.

That's exactly the one. The parodies are so unsubtle that they push your face in it. What I like about SP, is that, similar to Mystery Science Theater 3000, their references are sometimes kind of obscure, which makes it all the more entertaining if you get it.
So, since very little of us have ever seen a european variety show, the humour is completly lost, thus making it a stupid show. (except to the creator and stars, which defeats the purpose of entertaining people if they are the only ones who "get it").

I loved the state, have every episode on tape and watch them all the time. However, I find Viva Variety's style very different, and although I can see how some people like it, I find that it lacks much of what made the State a classic TV show.
I have to agree. The State rocked! The Maxx was pretty cool, way better than the comic. As for Dead At 21, I missed the first couple episodes so I never really got into it, can anyone explain to me what happened through the series (I know, off-topic as hell, sorry!) Obligatory South Park: I saw a Cartman sticker (of him alone, standing there) on a CRX the other day, anyone know where they sell these?
Yeah I got a Kenny one the other day at Hot Topic. It's one of those mall-chain-store places. They had stickers of all 4 of them alone, stickers of them together, plus other random SP stuff that I've never heard of or seen before like a hat with Cartman on it and a hat with all 4 on it and a Big Gay Al shirt (it had Al and under it, it said "spendid" or something like that). I don't think these are bootleg-type merchandise either cause they are sold in a nationwide chain store. I couldn't believe how much SP stuff was in that store. Anyone else see a Hot Topic packed with SP goods?
<smartass>Wrong, genius. Honda still makes CRX's. They replaced the hatch with a trunk; the car is now called a Honda Del Sol. Do your fucking homework.</smartass>
thereby changing the essence of the car, the CRX is a compact sport-coupe, the del Sol a compact, targa-roadster hybrid of a Viper and a Miata. Dodge and Mazda DNA just won't splice... (hey, an actual reference to South Park)
homework.</smartass>
The del Sol is no longer in Honda's model lineup, either, it was euthanized after the '97 model year. :-)
The del Sol does have some redeeming qualities, most notably the DOHC VTEC engine. Overall though, I prefer the hatchback design. I've owned and '84 and still have an '88 Si, and find it to be much roomier than the del Sol (I am about 5 times the size of Cartman,) and much less expensive (dammit, I'm poor like Kenny, I can't afford a computer either. :-)) We're both Honda nuts, and South Park nuts as well, I'm willing to leave it at that.
Still - Honda refers to it as their late model CRX. A CRX is a CRX is a CRX, whether that be with a trunk, t-tops, a targa top, a hatch, or whatnot. If Honda markets it as their new CRX, then that's good enough for me.
See my other post on this topic. I realized last night that I didn't include it in the quoted post above, and I figured, you being a smartass would probably nail me for that. So I replied saying, something to the effect of 'And don't even try to tell me they killed the del Sol for '98, I already know.' So, hah, GOT YOU BEAT! :-)
Only problem is, for a small car, they're incredibly heavy, making them incredibly slow. Your CRX and my Accord could blow away a del Sol (which mine has, I don't know if you ever have or not)
I do, too. The del Sol looks cool with the spoiler, but goofy without it.
If you really wanna see people swallow billard balls then maybe you should try either Jerry Springer or a local freak show .... The only thing i have seen that is worth watching on Viva was the "Blow me, Tits, Boner, Ass whipes, Pig F*cker segment" ....

They must be paid basically nothing and use The Daily Show's set after a GOOD show is finished with it.
Enough with the crappy foreign accents and freak acts that became tiresome in 1950 circuses. The show is pretty bad and I have given it many chances to grow on me but it didn't. Unlike "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" which I did not like at first but now think is genuinely hilarious at moments.

Awesome skit regardless. Thanks for jogging the old brain pan.
That skit where those Italians in that one restaurant "accidently" dumped stuff on each other while preparing for a dinner with the Pope. I thought it was hilarious.
nine was really dumb but it was basically a family sitting down to eat in a house that was infested with mice (fake mice of course) and every time a mouse jumped on one of their plates they yelled WHERES THE MOUSEY
ten was hilarious they had louie dress up in a tuxedo and drive around all over town taping him as he went well anyways he taped peoples reactions to him wearing a tuxedo at different places like a car wash when no body made a big deal over him wearing a tuxedo louie started to BS a bunch of stuff about how big of a deal they made over him wearing a tuxedo
ten is definetly a skit that you would have to see to appreciate
The dipping the balls thing was funny. Once. The first time he said it. And only the first time. Which made the other 99 times a bit of a letdown. The "honor code" prison system is a rip-off from a Simpsons episode. . .basically every skit on The State has been done before by more talented people--Monty Python, Kids in the Hall, SNL. . .IT'S A RIP-OFF. Seeing the same stuff again with that cast of losers is basically like all your friends doing impersonations of Cartman--it's a cheap imitation of the original, it's funny once, but it gets old faster than Cher.
Kenny dying is funny each time because the death occurs in a different fashion every time. Every show has predictable themes; it's the originality with which those themes are explored that makes great writing and great television. You know in every episode of Seinfeld that Jerry's gonna break up with someone, George is gonna get fired, and Kramer's gonna do something wacky. So why keep watching? Because the circumstances that lead to those results are extremely original--that's why the show's been on forever. The State absolutely did NOT have that originality. There's a difference between taking an old idea and revisiting it in a clever way, and just regurgitating what someone else has done in the past. Now, granted, Viva Variety has its share of innovation and originality, but that in itself doesn't make for a good show. South Park is an original because, although it does borrow from previous shows, it has an entirely new outlook on the material: an irreverence, an honesty, and a politically incorrect stance that no one has ever had before. That's why it succeeds.
Whereas SP is a clever fusion of Beavis, Simpsons, and Ren with a fresh interpretation and political messages (yes, I'm being serious), The State was simply Kids in the Hall with different (and worse) actors. So The State failed, and the losers that couldn't get other jobs melded their old crap with a Circus Sideshow and produced the twisted freak of a lovechild we now know as Viva Variety.
actually i think the only thing that mr and mrs laupin (does those names sound familiar STATE fans) used from The State was the bavarian public access skit
personally i thought the skit was hilarious but i think it was dumb to base an entire show on the skit seeing that there is only so far they can go with it
Yes I watch Seinfeld and No I'm not trolling. The day Kenny's death is no longer funny will be the day SP starts to go downhill--just like the day we were watching Beavis and found ourselves no longer laughing at "Asswipe". Personally, I think the more sophisticated the comedy, the more staying power the show has. While SP is clearly more sophisticated than Beavis, Viva Variety has all the sophistication of "Terrence & Phillip".
Well, you posted that George gets fired in every episode. Not true. He may or may not weasel out of getting fired. He's had a very dynamic, turbulent, unpredictable career.
You forgot the Shakespeare skit where each character came out with a progressively larger (and anatomically correct) groin bulge. The last one, where the guy had something phallic wrapped around his leg several times in those tights, was so goddamn funny I almost messed myself.
Hands down one of the funniest skits I ever saw on tv. Who cares if it was done somewhere before by someone else. It was still hilarous. And of course, the VCR did not have a tape ready to go. Damn my feeble brain!
The skit where the kid was making up some story about dragons in the basement, and that his parents were neo-Nazis was funny as well.
Been a long time since I saw it. Compared to some of the idiotic smegma on MTV nowadays, it was top notch.
i dont remember seeing the shakespeare skit though i thought i saw all the episodes
and to think my friends all thought that i was delusional when i told them about THE STATE (apparently i am the only person in milwaukee who has seen the freaking show)
Oh, I wouldn't call Viva the worst that comedy central has to offer. Try sitting through a 'Make Me Laugh' marathon at some point. (Oh, Ken Ober, whatever has become of you? Even Blues Traveler videos were better than this televised excrement.)
Uh, you think Viva is fucked? I can't think of an even stronger word to describe most of NBC's Must See TV double-fucked-up clone fest. Except for 4 sitcoms, the rest aren't worth the class of Mr. Hanky.

The accents are pan-European. The Laupins lean towards somewhere between French and Castillian Spanish, but the names are obviously French, while JBJ leans towards German, Russian, or some little-known republic in Eastern Europe where they just got imported Pepsi last week.
We'll nail down Kenny's line in the opening credits before we nail down their nationalities, though. The actors who play all three characters are North American.
