The fist fight sequence in "Cripple Fight" was a hommage to John Carpenter's 1989 movie "They Live".
The basic plot of They Live is an average everyday working man stumbles across a plot where aliens of some sort are actually hiding amongst us as the rich elite... converting our atmosphere to theirs, forcing more people into becoming poor while they get rich, etc. (basically Reaganomics! LOL) The guy, played by former wrestler Roddy Piper, then decides to strike back against the overclass.
During the movie, he tries to convince a co-worker of the evil alien plot. The way you see through their disguises and such is a pair of chemically-treated sunglasses (sounds dumb, but it worked in context) - the guy and his co-worker get into a huge fist fight in an alley as Piper's character tries to force the other guy to wear the sunglasses. The funny thing is that the fight scene in They Live lasts about 10 minutes - probably the longest single fight scene between 2 guys ever filmed, aside from maybe the Rocky movies. The fight in "Cripple Fight" lifts several manuevers and lines from the They Live fight scene, including "You dirty motherfucker" and "put on the hat!" (put on the glasses)
Great stuff. I have immense repsect for Matt and Trey for being a fellow They Live fan.
