Hey folks......when Ike was shut up in the attic by Kyle during the battle with Canada, was it just me or was that a tribute to the Diary of Anne Frank? Being that she was a jew (canadian) in the unfirendly country of the Netherlands (USA)? It really caught me off guard when i saw it..anyone else?

He meant that Anne Frank was a Jew in the Netherlands, just like Ike was a Canadian in the USA.

Well, he really wasn't a Jew until the bris (Ike's Wee-Wee), and I was always under the impression that you had to willingly convert from one religion to another (although some Catholics, Christians and other religions will try to force their religion down your throat). Anyway, even though at that point, he was Jewish, that still wasn't the reason he was up in the attic. :)

If Ike was born to a Jewish mother, he was Jewish from birth. Otherwise he wouldn't be a Jew until he converted, bris or no.

True. I just assumed that since he was Canadian that he probably wasn't Jewish. Then again, I don't know what the size is of the Jewish-Canadian population. But this is still an interesting question: if a Jewish family adopts a non-Jewish infant/child, is the child automatically converted to Judiasm, or will s/he become a Jew when s/he's old enough to make the decision by him/herself? I should check my Joys of Yiddish book.

OK, here's a quote from The Joys of Yiddish about circumcision and Judiasm. It doesn't really answer my question up above, but it might clear up some stuff:

"The circumcision is held to signalize an obligation - to observe the
Covenant between God and Isreal, to live and exemplify the life of virtue, to
obey, teach, and transmit God's law.
	"In a wider sense, circumcision imprints into a man's body a life-long
sign that Israel will be perpetuated through him - that his seed, passing
through the circumcised portal, will create children who will in turn be
pledged to the Jews."

So just from this, it sounds like if you're circumcised by a mohel, then you better be Jewish. :)

Okay, riddle me this, what happens when a circumcised male converts to Judaism?

A drop of blood is drawn from his penis. I've been told it represents a blood bond between Jewish men & God (cf. Abraham).

Ok, since I've always been Jewish, and have never met anyone who converted to Judaism, I'll take your word for it. But still, ouch! :)

I know someone who converted to Judaism. He was Catholic, but his fiance was Jewish and her parents wouldn't allow her to marry goyim, so he converted.

I think he had already been snipped, though, as an infant. It's nut just a Jewish thing anymore. Many many non-Jews are having it done to their children these days.

circumcision has been the bane of my existance since i found out everyone else had one. they even tried to imply i would be more acceptable if i got one. what fuck-ups! it's true, that the majority of people who get urinary tract infections are uncircumcised, however, i have a theory to account for this. circumcision is practically routine at hospitals, and society favours the circumcised man. circumcision costs 200-300$ on the hospital bill. most people will opt for the circumcision if they can afford it. this means that there are people like me, whose parents voluntarialy denied the service, and there are people who are too poor to afford it. who is more likely to not be able to afford anti-biotics, booster shots, and preparatory injections that most infants recieve to fight off infections? who is upsetting the national average? if you don't see what i'm saying, i am saying that the numbers are screwed up because a good percentage of people who aren't circumcised couldn't afford it, and couldn't afford antibiotics, and if they had circumcisions for free they still would have gotten urinary tract infections from being too poor, but they couldn't afford them and now they skew the polling system making uncircumcised males bear a stigma of "dirtyness"

personally, i feel it's like a "zip-lock" baggie for my dong, keeping me fresh and tender. hahaha sigh.... Dave wrote in message ...

This is probably a message that I shouldn't even bother responding to in the first place, but to bring some seriousness back into this subject, it is true that most non-Jewish boys do have circumcisions. They usually have them right after birth. However, Jews need to wait 8 days until they have their bris. Therefore, it is actually healthier to be not Jewish than it is to be Jewish!

Daniel Gilison http://www.stanford.edu/~gilison [email] My friends think I'm apathetic, but I don't care.
DaveKrinklealt.tv.southpark

Who tried to imply that?

Sure, I usually have to drop my pants on job interviews and when applying for bank loans.

This is ridiculous.

So circumcision is not the issue at all, it's really the lack of decent healthcare for those who can't afford it. Why not rail against Bayer because they can't afford the $20 that hospitals charge for aspirin?

There's no way you can make this logical leap and expect it to stick. You might say that unhealthy people living in squalor bear the stigma of "dirtyness", but you can't point to a tiny little percentage of the big picture and say that that's the root cause of the problem.

Have a glass of cranberry juice for me. :)

allright, how about this? the national health whatever board of america recently, in 1999, stopped reccommending circumcision, and stated while it's the individual's choice, there is no medical advantage to it anymore. i both read an article, which i failed to hold on to, and John Stuart of the Daily Show had this in the "headlines" section of the show, and asked the rhetorical question "is it to late to get it back?"

The theory I've heard is that infant male circumcision is routinely practiced in the United States because of the belief that the exposed penis head becomes desensitised due to the friction against the wearer's undergarments. This in turn lowers sex drive and in general makes adolescent teens behave like "good little boys." Personally, I think it's just one more hang-up from the Puritans who were the founding fathers.

I don't see how it would lower sex drive - their hormones are still raging; but it might make them last longer (is this a plot by women? <g>). Circumcising non-Jewish males didn't become common until the 20th century, 40's -50's, I'd guess. People have said it is healthier & that sex partners of circumcised males had a lower incidence of cervical cancer, but this was back when people bathed once a week (whether they needed it or not). I don't know if there's such a correlation nowadays.

Otherwise

*Was* he born to a Jewish mother, though? He's adopted, anyway, so Sheila Broslofski doesn't count.

By the way, Catholics *ARE* Christians. At one time there was only the Christian Church, based in Rome. Then in the 11th or 12th century the Byzantine Catholics broke away and formed the Orthodox Church, which later split east (Moscow) and West (Constantinople, now modern day Istanbul--ironically, the Western Orthodox Church (of which Greeks form a large majority) is now based in Greece's arch enemy Turkey!). The Lutherans formed the Protestent movement in Germany in the 16th century, and King Henry VIII orchestrated the English part of the Reformation by setting up the Church of England and ending Rome's influence in spiritual matters in England. Throughout all of this, the Roman Catholic Church carried on through thick and thin.

So, Anglicans and Lutherans, Episcopalians and Methodists are all Protestants; all of which, along with Catholics and other denominations, are also Christians.

It's never mentioned who his real mother is. But from the quote that I posted from The Joys of Yiddish, it sounds like if a child undergoes a bris by a mohel, then it's Jewish. And it really doesn't matter if he was Jewish or not, he was in the attic because he was Canadian!

Cool. Thanks for the history lesson. I know that Catholics are Christians (or as I jokingly refer to them as "Jesus people"). It's just that they're different enough in their beliefs (I think, or I could just be making this up) that I refered to them individually. Still, it is interesting to see how all of these religions came about.

Jewish or not,

I have no idea how these things work, except you can be baptised as a child and thus involuntarily become a Christian days after birth, so it is possible the same is true for the Jewis faith.

Christians (or

<shrug> :) I also often wondered how there are so many different denominations; a six-week pull-out supplement "AD: 2000 years of Christianity" in the Daily Telegraph recently answered a lot of my questions.

I could go on, but this really is off-topic here. If anyone's interested I can take this to e-mail.

This was my immediate thought. In fact, I couldn't remember the name of the book, so I had to lean over and ask the girl next to me the title.

Hey, if everything was put back the way it was before all this happened, how come Ike is still in the attic?

This is like that X-File where Mulder & Fletcher get switched back to their own bodies and all the damage by the gravity warp in Nevada is undone (and no one remembers the three days 'cause they didn't happen), but back in Washington DC Scully still has the dime fused witht he cent and Mulder's apartment still has the waterbed bought by Fletcher.

Ike's still in the attic because he was in there before the war begun. Kenny wanted everything returned to before the war begun, so Ike would still be in the attic. However, this doesn't explain what happens to Mr. Hat, though...
