Mental illness and suicides

So now I learn that Mary Kay Bergman was also troubled bymental illness(es). Now I can personally make sense of it.

Democratus, you do have my sympathies.

I know someone who is what anyone would call "schizo." She has also tried suicide several times in the last 15 years (once when she was renting a room from us, which was almost the successful attempt). When we first met her she was messed up but when she was "normal" she was a very sweet person who would stop by my wife's office and talk to her (she was a student at the university) and who had just broken up with a colleague of mine. But she turned out to be a very unbalanced person. We found out she liked to cut herself with razors. She would go off and end some rant about how miserable her life was with the line, "I'll just DIE!!!" She also liked barbituates and could get prescriptions. The last couple of months she was renting from us she went totally off the deep end. She started hearing voices and would talk back to them. She was convinced that one neighbor was beaming microwaves into her room, and that the lady and her 11-year old daughter upstairs were part of some government plot to spy on her and take pictures of her. She cut her neck one afternoon and we had her put away (it's called a "51-50" after the code). When she got out she seemed OK for a while, then she stopped eating and tried to live on aloe juice. Finally one morning while we were getting ready for work we found her passed out sitting onthe edge of her bed in a drug-induced coma. We called 911 and she ended up in the ICU for weeks with considerable brain damage. She's ended up in a wheelchair. She's refused to seek treatment or counseling, and every time we've tried to help her we became part of that CIA plot against her. We have come to realize that you can't help these people. They are so convinced that they are "right" and that what they are going to do is the correct thing. You cannot tell them they are hallucinating. This is what it means to be truly CRAZY.

No, actually, I don't need to find out about the kinds of things you or others have experienced. I subscribe to alt.tv.southpark, not alt.learning.sanity. If we all shared our personal experiences about those kinds of things, then this would cease to be alt.tv.southpark, and would become alt.depression or alt.insanity or alt.suicide.

Perhaps you're familiar with the word "appropriate"? I think you'll find that most folks agree that talk of suicide might apply at the moment to a South Park website, but certainly not talk of your personal experience about how someone you knew ended up insane for reasons you cannot explain nor specify.

I'm truly sorry that you had to go through that sort of thing. But dude... you WERE trolling, and face it - you got caught.

Bullshit. It's first and foremost a way for lifeless jerks to to get a little thrill by pissing off a bunch of folks. Generally, these people were the downtrodden in high school and trolling is their way of bullying people.

Secondly, a lot of newbies don't know what trolls, flames, FAQs, killfiles, plonks, or any of that stuff is. Remember that the size of the net increases exponentially every day.. there are always new people jumping into newsgroups for the first time and being clueless. When they enter a newsgroup and see a message from some asshole, their first impulse is to fight back. They don't know any better.

You can try to defend and/or validate trolls to your heart's desire, but I think that the majority of people both in this newsgroup and on the rest of the net think of them as pathetic losers who have to hide behind computer screens rather than facing real people.

One basic idea of trolling is that you target a large cross-section of the population and insult them in such a way as to draw in responses from those who might not normally respond. In targeting the "youth of America", you've opened up this discussion into the realm of anyone who might fit into that category, and anyone who might be offended by "their dwindling conversation skills".

By Lone Wolf's definition of trolling, "When they enter a newsgroup and see a message from some asshole, their first impulse is to fight back. They don't know any better." I'd say the message just previous to this one is a trolling message.

You've just proven AwW's statement that you are capable of the occasional troll, without even knowing it.

Ok, not as many, but the total number of responses to troll posts increases with your participation in those threads. And that's *not* bullshit.

There are as many reasons for trolling as there are trolls. Many trolls are just practical jokers attempting to amuse themselves and their audience. Some have genuine animosity toward a particular group or individual that they believe has done them wrong. Some are just loathsome, contemptible hooligans bent on disrupting the ordinarily peaceful exchange of useful information for their own perverted pleasure.

Usenet provides a medium to create and express oneself, and gives the added dimension of anonymity, allowing the troll to create and express emotions, thoughts and ideas that he/she might not ordinarily express. For many, Usenet is the first and only place their creative works will ever be "published". Trolling, for many, is a creative endeavor, and art form if you will, misunderstood by many, appreciated by a few, but valid to the troller none-the-less.

Or perhaps you're right, and they're all just 14 year old kids pulling their puds in their parents' basements, but you know I'm closer to the truth than you are.

Well, as I said in another post, I am not trying to troll. I call things as I see them. When i found out MKB had mental problems it changed my perspective. But I know some people who are crazy, either a little or majorly, and I have opinions on them. I also know people who has various disabilities and who are not bonkers in any way. A woman I know with CP doesn't whine about her condition. Just because she's in a wheelchair doesn't limit her social life, except in just being able to get into and around places. She has more reason to gripe that this other dude I knew who was an alcoholic and a whiner but who had no physical disabilities(he became born again, and it figures). But she doesn't whine or gripe. I like her for that reason and besides she's a lot of fun and has a great sense of humor.
