Around here, our digital cable is snowy. It looks nothing like Direct TV. Maybe our cable just bites.

I would say so! I have regular cable, not the pricier digital, and I don't see any snow at all. I started to, but I called and complained, and they put a signal amp on my line and that cleared it right up. I like their service. With my previous cable company, there was lots of snow, and they were .

The more expensive digital cable wasn't really all digital, it just had extra channels and a bunch of music stations.

Cable is definitely a YMMV thing. I've been lucky in that most of my (analog) cable experience has been a crystal clear picture with great sound. I've seen bad cable (Adelphia in Upland has channel 11 audio that sounds worse than AM radio) so this is in no way a blanket statement.

I'd taste test both before deciding. DirecTV tends to have a smuggy picture due to digital compression. Cable can run from studio-quality to a snowy ghosty mess.
