Damn, that episode pissed me off. I don't mind it when the show is merely offensive, it's all in good fun. But nothing pisses me off like the spread of ignorance.

It's not obvious to me. Trey and Matt seem to be dyed-in-the-wool libertarians, and although some libertarians might be against stem-cell research, most are probably in favor of it--or at least in favor of the government keeping out of the matter.
I took it that they were just trying to be outrageous, like when they pulled a fast one and showed a Terrance and Philip half-hour instead of the anticipated revelation of who Cartman's father was.
I thought it was clever how they acknowledged the touchiness of the subject by having the main four boys deliberately keep themselves out of the whole controversy.

Doesn't matter what their motives were. They could be raving necropheliac nazis, and I'd still watch the show. I was just concerned they were giving an awful lot of viewers a very, very bad impression of stem cell research not to mention Christopher Reeve. This seemed like the place to speak out about it.

Personally, what I think they were doing was showing how the uproar about stemcell research is ridiculous. People act like what Chris Reeve did in the episode is really what happened, like it's some huge horrible thing. I don't think they were trying to say "This is bad, it should be outlawed!"

It looked to me that they were trying to make fun of the people that think it's a bad thing. Critics of stem cell research try to make it sound like they're experimenting on aborted babies rather than on microscopic zygotes. The greater the exaggeration the sillier they look.

I have to agree with that. This is the second ep they've bashed stem cell research, and they've slammed abortion several times already ( "Cartman's Mom is Still a Dirty Slut", the Baby-Be-Gone pills, the Mole's line in the movie. ) Whenever Gene Hackman talked about stem-cell research he sounded serious, and the joking stopped. I'm surprised that people seem so reluctant to believe that this is the statement Trey and Matt wanted to make.
Next thing you'll tell us is that Trey and Matt actually love Pokemon and Phil Collins.
