Why is the bleeping such a big deal??

it is funny that way its also funny the way they bleep it out but you know exactly what they are saying

Not to be too serious here, but the "bleeping" is pretty much a legal thing. If Comedy Central was a channel that didn't have commercial sponsors, and was pretty much pay-per-view or premium, the bleeps would probably be taken away. However, Comedy Central is an open channel to all viewers. Therefore the FCC requires that any of the offensive words...Fuck, shit, (and various conjugations and tenses) must be bleeped in order not to offend those who might occasionally watch! It's all in the laws of TV...you don't want South Park to be banned for not bleeping do you?

Personaly I figure in 5 or 10 years they'll finaly get smart and realize the FCC is essentially useless & bleep it <G>.

btw: how many bleepable acronyms can one devise for F.C.C.? <G>.

Sometimes the bleeping is part of the comedy. Remember in "Cartman gets an anal probe" when Kyle asks the aliens to give him back his little brother very nicely, they dont, and then he blurts out this incredibly long @!%!$#^&#^$, all bleeped but with pauses to hear him breathe. Now that was funny. And when Stan asks Wendy what's a @!%!$^$#^. Nice touch...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the bleeps are part of the comedy in South Park. They are added in-house as part of the comic effect of the show, not by Comedy Central. Even if they could, I doubt Trey and Matt would allow the characters to openly curse as that would completely change the type of comedy they are trying to produce.

I generally agree with you save for one exception, "Even if they could, I doubt Trey and Matt would allow the characters to openly curse....." In Soxmas cursing was used sparingly but with great comedic effect. I think if they could they would use fuck, cocksucker et al very sparingly but strategically. Just my .02�

The Canadian Comedy Network has announced they will be showing the first 13 episodes of SP uncensored every weeknight starting Aug 4.

I hope this means they will be dispensing with the bleeps. Lux

i think the bleeping adds more comedy to the show really. i find my self bleeping my cuss words out to friends. and they laugh. though when i actually cuss its not as funny. dont know why. but... im sorta a comedian. and its just funnay as BEEP to see some1 say "YEA YOU MUTHER BEEEEP! GO BEEEP! BEEEEP!! BEEP! YOU GOD BEEP! BEEP! HOLE!" get my point?

To add to this, I think that the bleeping is, in a lot of cases, intentional for comic effect. I'm thinking about Kyle's big outburst in "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe" after the aliens won't give him back his little brother: there was something like 10 solid seconds of beeping in that, and I don't think that it would have been as funny had we heard the words. And, besides, the beeping is not removed on the home videos, which you'd think wouldn't have the content restrictions the show does.
