I thought the resolution was excellent. It hit the nail right on the head. At my court-mandated meetings, every time I hear an AA member answer the question "How'd you do it?" (refering to their recent sobriety period) by answering "I didn't do it, God did", I want to shout out ---> "For God's sake Joe, give yourself some freaking credit. God didn't do it. You did."

Like Stan said, true discipline comes from within. It's willpower or a lack thereof. It's not a disease, it's a choice. Yes, some people just don't have as much willpower as others and alcoholism has taken a firmer hold of some drinkers than others, but the power to quit drugs and alcohol is inside you, if you want to reach deep enough for it. It's not some miracle that a "Higher Power" is going to give you.

If you haven't seen Penn & Teller's Bullshit episode "12-Stepping", you have to check it out. I think it was in Season One. They rip AA badly for being so religion- oriented and their Disease vs Willpower stance. It's so close to the SP "Bloody Mary" episode that you'd think the SP episode was written just after the writers had finished watching the P&T episode.

Anyway, I know this episode wasn't very popular with a lot of viewers, but being an atheist sentenced to AA for a DUI (just a small part of the sentence), I feel this episode is soooo On Target....

Yeah, but alcohol is a damn difficult drug to stop. Some people are completely screwed on it. Just because it doesn't affect you like it affects others, thats no reason to shit on an organisation that exists purely help people, IMO. Stopping it totally is the only way for some people, and I'm sorry, but they acted like they were in some way knowledgable by saying "drink in moderation is the answer" which was *stupid*.

M&T just freaked out after the scientology ep, plain & simple. They started to think maybe they couldn't feel the fence poking into their butt anymore & they had to get back on it & get back on it hard.

They were never *once* before vindictive or nasty *to anyone* (ok they made sally struthers cry but they didn't mean to) which is why I started liking the show. It was a breath of fresh air from other shows which just throw their weight around crushing people & the viewer is just piggy in the middle. I hope SP doesn't become like that, but all good shows come to an end eventually.

I'm sure they'll probably come back good as ever in March.

I mostly attend AA meetings for my DUI program when I'm not forging the signatures. I dont mind the meetings. I look at it as free counciling. I have no intention on stopping drinking although I will never drive after drinking. I laughed my ass off at the first half of that episode before they ruined it with "bloody mary". Yea, I was raised Catholic and the scores of other seamingly blasphemous episodes didn't seem to bother me .....this one did. The Virgin Mary is not in the news and IMO has no relevant purpose in that episode. AA speaks nothing of Mary. Only of God or a higher power. They just have it out for the entire Catholic religion it seems. I'm all for critisizing when it has it coming ...but this was just baazar. --J
