It's meaningless anyway. Hundreds of Cubans die trying to reach Florida shores every year. Her death was as meaningless, or as meaningful, as any or all of the others. Perhaps I sound callous, but I've been living in South Florida for about 25 years, and this has been a part of my life since the 70's. Hell, some of my best friends are Marielitos.
A man forced to leave his country to retrieve his child wants to return with the child to his homeland, and you see this as a lack of common sense? Pot/Kettle/etc.
If anything, admire his sense of patriotism. I'm sure plenty of people would sell out their homeland, and their own grandmothers for that matter, for two million US dollars.

Until the past 2 weeks I had trouble forming an opinion, but I totally agree with the above now. The family acted so stupidly; they polarized and politicized the situation beyond what could be imagined and refused to act rationally. At times their behavior evoked the whole "jihad" (holy war) syndrome in the Middle East, where attempts to reason become useless.
Now just watch the presidential campaign shift 75% of its focus to this incident instead of everything else.
We cannot blame Reno for sending SWAT in, because the family refused to turn the Elian in, it has turned into a hostage crisis. Of course we cannot expect the SWATs to send in candy and dressup like women to take the child. Breaking doors to rush in, yelling are unique tactics. The bottom line is : Elian belongs to Juan Fidel Castro has proved to Americans that the Cuban exiles are as bad and Al Gore has nothing to do with this :)

So in other words, you find something wrong with the USA too if you would move to the UK. In Cuba, the boy has a chance of growing up with fewer taxes, no toy stores to improve his imagination and relatively disease free as those with communicable diseases are put into a hospital. The finest cigars are available for his adulthood. Why is everybody concerned about the boy when the next words out of their mouths are "Castro"? Why doesn't anyone crucify the Miami family for holding the kid hostage against the courts desires? I would charge the fisherman Dalrymple with depraved indifference for hiding with the kid in a closet. NO WONDER THE COPS HAD THEIR GUNS DRAWN! And it wasn't even pointed at the kid. It is all about Castro, not Elien. When the police tell you to put your hands up you do it! That is what the US courts system is for.
