A "Who's who" question about Fat Albert

I need a dispute with someone from alt.tv.southpark settled. See, I made a transcript to the Fat Abbot parodies from the Clubhouse SP episode, and pointed out that Dumb Donald (the masked dude) was actually given the voice of Mushmouth (you know, the dude who "talksbuh likea thisbuh"). Well, someone responded that he thought Dumb Donald was always the one with the funny voice. However, I clearly remember DD having a normal voice on the cartoon, while Mushmouth (who was a totally different character design) was the one with the speech impediment. I stated this, but the person in question insists that he is right. Now, I'm not familiar with the Fat Albert sketches from Bill Cosby's comic routines, so I don't know if he shuffled the names of his characters when they made the cartoon, but I remember that Dumb Donald didn't speak funny (well, as not funny as you can get for a Fat Albert character). My question, simply, is who's right?

Well, they both had wool hats, and Dumb Donald's hat covered his face (the "mask"), and he had that high-pitched voice which some might call "funny" (distinctive, at least) in its own right...

I'd say that you're right on this one. Mushmouth was the one who "talksbuh plainbuh" (that was a hilarious SNL skit BTW) - why would he be named Mushmouth if he wasn't the one with the speech impediment?

This issue was dealt with on an episode of NewsRadio a few seasons ago. Someone brought in a Dumb Donald hat, the pink mask thing, saying how it would be a good idea to sell them. Everyone in the office who saw the hat instantly commented "Hey, a Mushmouth hat!", so then the owner of the hat/mask had to correct them.

Very easy mistake to make (I've certainly done it before). Mushmouth was the guy who wore a hat with a ball on the end, I think a short yellow shirt, and had big lips. Dumb Donald wore the pink mask/hat with a green and blue shirt, and had a high, shrill voice.

While we're on the topic of Fat Albert, can someone tell me the names of the Brown Hornet's sidekicks, especially that little tape player looking guy? That's been bugging me for years...

The Brown Hornet's sidekick was Scooter.

....In order, here's how to tell the Cosby kids apart, and where they are now:

Fat Albert: This one's obvious save to the blind and/or a white supremacist who really believes "they all look alike to me". Fat Albert is also a blimp used for Air Force radar and to broadcast TV Marti's signals to Cuba. Hey, hey, hey, Fidel! The USA gonna blow you away one day! Albert wears a red shirt with white collar just in case you really are too stupid to figure out who he is. Fat Albert's son, Albert Belle, has gained his own notoriety as becoming the one baseball player who should get castrated on the field in front of the fans he's spit on over the years before being banned from baseball for life.

Bill Cosby: Mr. Jello's younger self, before he learned what a sense of humor was for. WHite shirt, blue jeans. Probably played tennis with a young Robert Culp even if we never saw it...

Russell Cosby: Bill's whiny little brother. Short, rotund, and wears one of those combo winter hats with the front bill and ear covers that we normally don't need down here in Texas. Wears a blue coat, with yellow scarf. Why they didn't hang him with it I never could understand. Russell changed his name to Marion Berry, and is currently the mayor of Washington, DC.

Weird Harold: Tallest of the gang, and the only one that Mr. Jello bothers to mention in his stand-up acts these days, Wears a beige jacket, white dress shirt, and olive green pants. Weird, alright. Harold attempted a basketball career, but became a garbage collector instead. His son, Dennis Rodman, was disowned by Harold when the basketball "star" first painted his hair plaid.

Rudy: Ah, the florescent thug. Wears purple shirt with red pullover sleeveless sweater, and a red chauffer's cap - not a beret, as some have claimed. Rudy currently resides in Sing-Sing, where he's doing a 35 year stretch for selling drugs to rich white kids outside of the ghetto. He currently shares a cell with Joe E. "Oooh! Oooh!" Botch, who is serving a life sentence for feeding his former boss at the Wonderland Zoo, Mr. Peevly, to the star attraction bears. The two reportedly announced their engagement last month to a reporter for _Ebony_ magazine.

Dumb Donald: THis is the one with the purple ski mask pulled over his head with cutouts for the eyes. Lime green shirt with long sleeves, and bright blue jeans. Dumb Donald later grew up to become Wesley Snipes' stunt double, and spends his off time as a White House aide.

Mushmouth: Biggest lips of the gang. Also wears a genuine canadian tocque, which he acquired while robbing two visiting canadians who came to the ghetto in search of beer and back bacon. Mushmouth now lives a life of luxury following a successful paternity suit against his real father, Mick Jagger, and has released two albums under the name Tone Loc.

Bucky: Short, has huge buck teeth, wears yellow t-shirt & tennis shoes, and green pants. Remember, ghetto kids in the 70's had even less color sense than they do today. Bucky now plays basketball for the Harlem Globetrotters, where they refer to him as Eugene.

Little confusion here. In the Fat Albert sketches, Russell, was not Russell Cosby, he was just plain Russell, and unrelated to cartoon Bill Cosby.

Bill Cosby does have an album (based on his stand-up comedy), "To My Brother Russell, With Whom I Slept," which tells of his experiences with his OLDER brother Russell. BTW - it is a hilarious sketch

The two Russell's are unconnected except in name.

Hope this helps.

Oh, the commentaries on where they are now, was great. LOL

....Yeah, I'd recalled that after I woke up the next morning. Havn't had any Cosby albums in damn near 20 years - hell, most of the spoiled brats who're writing these lame fanfics from the AOL accounts their parents gave them to keep them off the streets weren't even *zygotes* when I sold off all my Coz collection!

Gah. I'm gonna go watch Chef Aid now..

Russell

Actually, they were brothers on the show. I've seen the databases which states that they were indeed brother. Man, you're just school on a July afternoon. . . no class!! (just joking!)

The Fat Albert Roll Call:

Fat Albert: Leader of the crew. Morbidly obese. Moral center.

Rudy: Every gang has to have a jerk. Rudy wore one of those flat caps like Pip wears. He was rich, which made me wonder why he hung out in a junkyard with the other kids.

Bill: As in Cosby. Didn't do much.

Old Wierd Harold: The oldest and tallest of the kids. Obsessed with horror movies.

Russell: Bill's brother, the shortest and mouthiest of the kids. Always heavily bundled up, wore a hunter's cap like Kyle.

Dumb Donald: Dumb. Wore that really wierd hat with the eyeholes.

Mushmouth: Talksbuh likebuh thisbuh. Wore a regular winter hat and a scarf.

Bucky: Walked hunched over. Had bowl haircut. Lacked any discernable personality.

Hope that helps.

Now something weird: The week after "Clubhouses" aired, the Monday episode of "Animaniacs" featured a "Fat Albert" parody.

JB "You know, there are many people in the country today who, through no fault of their own, are sane... It is up to people like you and me who are out of our tiny little minds to try and help these people overcome their sanity.'"- Rev. Arthur Belling

....and a few corrections:

....And gravity center, too. Had Cosby been gifted with a background in physics, Albert would have been the brunt of Great Attractor jokes.

....Clarification: Rudy's dad owned the local junkyard, and was a succesful junk dealer. Had this been in Watts and not Nova Harlem, Rudy's last name would have been Sanford.

....Bill was intended to be the "everyman bystander". Ergo, someone to be joke fodder when the plot called for it.

....And again, the one Cosby Kid that Mr. Jello still uses in his act to any major degree.

....I thought somewhat about this after I posted it. Russell was an alteration of Cosby's original standup routine. Russell Cosby is Bill's *OLDER* brother. I suppose they needed a younger kid for more moral joke fodder.

....He was prepping for a career as a thug. Considering he was trying to keep his facial features hidden, maybe he wasn't so dumb after all.
