Watched South Park with my (British) family last night. We all got very puzzled. I now gather Jared is based on a real person. Heavily layered referencing is the best thing about SP but last night was completely unfunny if you hadn't heard about or seen those Subway Sandwich adverts, which of course none of us had. Wonder if they'll ever show it on British TV?

Jared is used in Subway adverts in the US. He was well, to be pollitically correct, gravity challeged. OK, he was fat. He says a major reason for his weight loss was eating Subway sandwiches that he had them make with low or no fat ingredients. Subway saw the value in the marketing. They have another similar ad with a fireman, but that doesn't run as often since some people thought it was exploiting firemen after the terrorist attack.

Jared is this retarded assmunch who ate a bunch of sandwiches from Subway and as a result got his 15 minutes of fame. If you were in America and saw the commercials Subway produced as a result, you'd get the joke of the new South Park episode. Basically, the only way they could possibly be more annoying is if Jared teamed up with CarrotTop to shill 1-800-COLLECT. They're annoying commercials, and they make you want to spit at Jared at the very sight of him. Essentially, people now want him dead. One person even lynched Jared's pet cat on his front lawn.

The Jared part of the episode was the best! We started laughing every single time he came on Southpark... always with that retarded music and repetitious scene of him walking. It was sooo funny! I thought that was the major joke throughout the ep, the AIDES thing was just a side to it, seeing Jared is what made us laugh.
Please refrain from using that sorry-ass catch-phrase some geek made up for his webpage. It's getting tiring. VERY tiring...

Actually, I have never seen the Jared Subway commercials, but was able to get the joke just the same. It didn't matter whether they were making fun of a real person, or they created the character to make fun of. They explained the character as much as was needed for the joke.
Granted, it's funnier if you know who the guy is, or have seen the real commercials, but it's not necessary to get the joke.
