Because they had to have at least one non-white character. Funny, he's the coolest one on the show.
He isn't, there is also a black kid. And you can see him clearly in some classroom shots, also in the football game episode at the football game when they are huddling.

I don't know. But I thought it was hilarious when the Mayor asked him to sing for Kathy Lee, to play up the town's diversity.
It's a plot device to enable some character to sing about "sweet luv" every episode. Can you imagine the "Kathy Lee" episode without Chef's song?

No, I think it is more that they wanted to have one REAL celebrity voice, and all the others are faked... badly.
Isaac Hayes is a real celebrity?? His career died 20+ years ago. How many viewers or people on this NG would you guess could have told you who Isaac Hayes was?

PS: No sleight intended (or imagined!) in my earlier post about Isaac Hayes' relative obscurity. I sure don't remember hearing much (anything?) about him since the mid-70's. I was not suggesting most on this NG are pre-pubescent (more like post-Apocalyptic).

CHef's voice is the dude from shaft, and since I am 19 i remember him cameoing on the fresh prince, during the Shaft wedding ceremony. SO his carear hasn't been dead for 20 + years, just more like 10+

Dude, he is completely a real celebrity. He's obviously one of those celebrities who counts because even though he hasn't been around as much, he is well-remembered and sought out - sort of like the situation with Tarantino and Travolta or Pam Grier. Besides, Isaac Hayes was in I'm Gonna Git You Sucka.
This is funny because these comments as well as the ones about Patrick Duffy and Simon and Simon are a clear line of demarcation for the ages of people on the list. I think that those who understand a lot of the inside jokes and inspired casting by South Park creators are around their ages more or less while some of the other fans are evidently much younger (born in the late 70s or in the 80s - e.g., I have a sister born in '85 who constantly asks me about some of the references). Anyhow, I'm done rambling.

What references are you refering to? I was born in 80 and understand the references. While I've never actually seen Simon & Simon, I know about it. The Tina Yuhters<sp?> didn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but I knew she was from Family Ties. Or The Facts of Life. ONe of those.
