They seem intent on playing this commercial during every break in South Park, and I'm getting really fucking sick of it.

"All you need is a deck, a brain, and a friend".

It was my understanding that people who played these games did so because they had no friends.

Magic is actually pretty fun.. it's a challenge, and fun at the same time.. and yes, you can have a life and play Magic at the same time. :)

Oh, don't tell me that MtG takes a lot of brain-power! I've played it. It's like Russian Bank (a two-player solitare game), but with a tired medieval fantasy theme. There are many more games, such as Hasmi Shogi or Mancala, that are easier to learn and require more thoughtfulness.

And remember - Dungeons and Dragons players call Magic players nerds!

No, you don't have to buy $500 worth of cards, my cousin has payed at most, $40 in one month and he consistently wins tourneys. With Pros with thousand dollar decks. If you have a good strategy you can win. That is the point of the game, think not buy all the power cards. Of course you don't want to hear me bitch about Magic, what I would like to know is in the commercial during South Park, usually the first one, or the intro to the commercials, what does Kenny say? Kyle says something like Brought to you by Magic the gathering blah blah, and then Kenny says something. Sounded to me like " A really funny game." Of course, don't trust me. I have never guessed what Kenny said right.

Ken made the baby Jesus cry by writing this:

Who's gonna do commentary on this game? Phil and Bob from the Comic Shop?

PHIL: And Charles has tapped two mana and summoned his Hellspawn...
 BOB: Hey, that's a good-looking Hellspawn card, too. I think that'd go
for $5 or so at the store. Actually, I'd sell it for $15.50 and
      go see Starship Troopers.
PHIL: Oh, no, look out, Randy has countered that summoning!
BOB: Dude, that sucks! That's even worse than the time my parents tried
      charging me for rent!

i REALLY hope Kenny is saying "this game sucks!" in the commercials.

Kenny wouldn't say that. South Park is sponsored by magic, if anything he says "It's a great game". They wouldn't screw with their sponsor's.

-- Squeaky Visit the Home of Squeak http://www.gate.net/~squeaky

I am 95% sure that Kenny trashed the sponsor. One must try and think logically here for a second. Magic the Gathering pays to have its name plastered around during breaks in the show. MtG would probably know that South Park is considered the most offensive show on the air that considers NOTHING sacred. Therefore, one would assume that the game would *encourage* Kenny to make fun of their game on the air because it will get a laugh from the audience. And when you get a laugh from the audience they're paying attention. And when they are paying attenion, they see your ad. Are you getting my point here? It would be good advertizing if they were to have their game trashed on the air. And more cards would sell. Its not like Magic is trying to proove its the best out there with its comercials. Its showing to people that it exists. Okay I'm done now

Just as a little sociology that backs this up, it is a widely accepted marketing theory that in mass marketing, such as commercials, it doesn't matter if the viewer gets a good or poor impression of your product, as long as they get an impression. This is related to brainwashing theory that states that any emotional response helps you achieve a brainwash, regardless of the what emotion it is and who (or what) it is directed at.

What is the deal with you and quoting? It seems like most of the things you write have to do with quoting.

OK... So from now on we can all stop quoting, and we'll just let Shoegaze99 start grading our posts too.

I agree....

And I don't really think that they're trying to dis' their sponsors, (they could've had Stan or Kyle say it) it's just Kennys sense of humor.

yes these magic commercials are getting horrific.

and you need to be independantly wealthy. in my magic career, i probably spent over $2,000 on cards. that's actually pretty low in terms of what the real players spend. so the above statement is actually false advertising.

no i had friends, and we all got into it at the same time. but once the amount of new cards being produced exceeds the amount of money you have to spend on cards you get really tired of the game. plus, like right after the commercials came out, magic cards were suddenly very hard to acquire since everybody was buying them. so, i've been magic-free for three months. anybody want to buy my collection? i'll sell cheap!

Yeah! I know people that actually have 'God books' - you know, those binders with *every* Magic card printed!

Sure were, man.

Yeah.. it went from, "Cool! I got a Jester's Cap!" to, "Jesus Christ! If I buy that dual land, how am I going to have enough money to buy Weatherlight *AND* Mirage?"

Yeah, man. It sucks.. the set is great for starters, it's got a great set of cards, so it's perfect for newbies trying to build a deck.. unfortunately, newbies don't have that much money to blow on a whole set, so all I'm getting is offers from people who've been playing for like 3 years.. all their offers are, "Uh, without all the crap thrown in, I'll give you $30 for 6 cards." It's just like, what, are you joking me?

I know, that sucks.. there was a card shop in a mall near my home selling Fallen Empire boxes for $40. I know a kid that bought a box just for the Hand of Justice he *might* get.

Like 3000 cards, and for as much as I possibly can get.

Yeah, I remember how everything was way cool in the beginning. After they released a new expansion every month and started banning complete expansions from tourneys, I figgered it was time to quit. Still don't have any friends though. ;)

Keep 'em. I bet your grand kids'll get a kick out of them. Or they may be worth some thing again someday. You know, like all the old comic books that everyone threw away cuz they were no longer into comics but are now worth $5,000. ;)

Lucas Treffkorn Boy Wodner and Lurker Extraordinaire

John Hayes and I were on the phone the other night reminiscing (sp?) about the times when kids would buy 10 Chaos Orbs, and when they pulled one in a tournament, just rip 'em up and chuck 'em at their opponent and obliterate *everything*, because the card was only like $2 at the time.. heh.. I know kids that would just drop the card onto a deck just because they knew the official would count the whole deck as destroyed. What a crappy way to get taken out of a tournament.. it's not like you can say, "Yeah, I was down to 1 life, then battled back up to 32, then drained him down to 3, then he pulls this mega-manuever, and I Deflect it, thinking I win, and he Counterspells me, and then, when I Counterspell him, he Counterspells me again, and then Forks the damn thing, so I got toasted," you kinda have to say, "A Chaos Orb touched my deck."

I know its off topic, but

I was into magic. I spent about $200 on cards. Little over a year later, I sold the collection for $1500 and bought my first P.C. type computer. (including the floppy drive that I still own) Wow.. those Legends cards sure were valuable!

I just think some guy complaining about the Magic commercials is funny. T.V. is run by advertising, and if South Park didn't have commercials, we wouldn't have elephants screwing pigs... and THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT!!!!!

They can have Douche commercials, as long as it pays the bills!
