I am not one for musicals and was let down that the movie had so much singing. I really enjoyed the non-singing bits but lets face it, this movie was a musical. I was really astounded that it was a musical and am still bewildered by it. My thoughts are that the typical Southpark audience would not go in for musicals, so I ask you people here, were you OK with the singing or did it take away from the movie for you?

Musicals ROCK! Esp Broadway sendups that feature the word uncle-fucker 700 times and a gay Satan singing about up there! This movie was funnier than Something about Mary, etc.
The Star Wars spoofs kicked.

I went straight from the theater to the record store to get the soundtrack. The second half ("interpretations" by other artists) pretty much blows, but the songs from the film are brilliant. The fact that all this insane, profane subject matter is conveyed as an old-fashioned, schlocky musical -- a SUPERBLY done old-fashioned, schlocky musical -- makes it all the more hilarious.

Funny, that's exactly what I thought, as well as the fact that Chef Aid was the same way, half of it kicked bum, half sucked bum. I just burned a CD with the best of both albums as well as Kyle's "I'm A Jew" and it rocks. Although I had to edit most of the Chef Aid tracks because of all the introductions, etc.
I think if they do another album it should be songs from the show...I loved Chef Aid, and I know I like the sndtrk...it'd be neet to have one done like the ones for the Simpsons.

I bought the soundtrack the day it came out. I love the interpretations of "It's Easy, M'Kay," "Uncle Fukka," and "What Would Brian Boitano Do." "Kyle's Mamma..." is very stange. I can do without RuPaul or Violent Femmes, though.

What I am really asking is if, given the option, would you have rather seen an hour an a half of it being like the older shows and have the singing replaced with more of the character's antics?

I think that statement is pure emotion and no logical reasoning.
If there were no songs, that time would have been filled up with something else you would have enjoyed just as much if not more. In other words, you would not have missed the music. Think about it.

Don't get me wrong. I _hate_ songs that intrude upon a comedy and bring the plot to a halt, as in many of Abbott & Costello's films. When the song is funny and fits into the film, that's different.
I thought I was gonna hate all the singing too, but I thought the songs were very clever. I really didn't think of it as a musical per se, but as a mockery of musicals. Instead of oozing love ballads, we get one song about uncle fucking and another one where Satan gets to sing about how evil is sometimes good. I'm looking forward to my next viewing. I loved the music. The lyrics were absolute genius, and I loved the sound as well. I thought that the music was a great addition to the movie, it added to the comedy even moreso. :)

So did south park, except they were based around foul words. Uncle Fucka was a riot. Mr. Garrison's song was hysterical.
