What did Kenny do to deserve his weekly death?

It is an established phenomenon that writers tend to kill off their enemies in their fiction, e.g. that kid down the block that gave them a hard time is the first one that gets eaten by the aliens. I am not saying that these people actually harm their foes, I am just saying that they write a set of scenes where the poor bastard dies badly.

My question is: What the hell did the kid that is Kenny comes from do to arouse such ire? I mean, they kill Kenny each goddamned week (except MAYBE Christmas. See thread where it is debated whether Kenny died or not in the Christmas show). What depraved and dispicable act did the real life Kenny do to diserve this treatment? We are talking about some heavyduty hate here.

So the question is: WHAT DID THE REAL LIFE KENNY DO TO WARRANT BEING KILLED EACH WEEK?

He's poor white trash. Nobody gives a shit about poor white trash. Especially if they have a filthy mouth. That's why they kill him. It's fun.

(sort of) Following this thread, one might say that sp fans have nihlistic tendencies, but surely the most unimaginative, tedious, and unsexy form of nihlism available... Do sp fans find speculation and thought such an uncomfortable and repulive concept? Is sp really the lowest commen denominator of humor?

My question is this: why do you find it necessary to put down other sp fans? Why this air of self-righteousness, this condenscending attitude? You've also posted on the "Suffer the Little Children" thread. You criticized those who disliked Doc's pedophilia story, citing free speech while calling us small minded. You're no better than other sp fans on this newsgroup. Please, do come down from your high horse.

I've seen this guy's post before, in the "Suffer the Little Children" thread. It's his style to insult South Park fans like us who disagree with his opinions. I think he likes to use big words because he wants to seem mentally superior to the rest of us. -Toni

Yes, its me, the stupid Neo-Nazi pig-fucker who seemed to offend half the SP loving population of this planet in 11 words.

So one person got the point of the message,

Come on down, Peter Thomas. (I could make the point about the British being the only ones who are able to understand irony, but I won't)

Lets take all the points raised so far

1. I apologise for calling Kenny Jewish. Sorry, I guess I'll never make that mistake again.

2. I am not a pigfucker, I do not have sexual relations with any type of animal (nor am I Welsh).

3. I am a massive SP fan, and did not make the post as a flame, or to get attention. South Park is one of the funniest, ludicrous and down right offensive shows on TV. We are all in this newsgroup, because we enjoy being amused. Maybe not offended, but definatly amused. However SP is also very offensive, and in the real world people can get offended. It says something when in half an hour a show can contain digs at homesexuals, jews, christians, blacks, and the greatest "minority group" of them all, the white male American. However at the same time SP trys to bring a bit of (in)sanity to the debates around genetic engineering, offensive TV etc. As fans of the show, in its newsgroup (really an unofficial fan club) shouldn't we try to bring some of that humour and a willingness to offend to the discussions going on. What I see as a South Park newsgroup is a continual, and very OFFENSIVE flame war, not pissy adverts for 4" plush toys and pseudo-scientific debates on the phsychology of SP. SP is about {{humour}} So to all those people who fired a quick knee-jerk reply to my message, perhaps you should think a little before acting. TO THOSE WHO WERE GENUINELY OFFENDED I EXPRESS MY SINCERE APOLOGIES.

4. I do not worship Adolf Hitler and I agree with none of his ideals. I am a member of Amnesty International, and am actively involved in their charitable works. Perhaps "my prejudice crap" is not really prejudice, but a real understanding of what SP is all about.

  • I await futher flames with interest.

I don't know what you did but you sound reasonable to me. That's not a trick is it? Everyone else seems to hate you. I come and go alot because this NG seems to be filled with a lot of trolls and "yeah me too" or "what if" people that really don't have the mentality of 6 year olds. It's been a while since I've been here but I did see some of the others talking about you and a thesarus and that does seem completely unfounded to me. You talk perfectly normal as far as I am concerned. I have seen others try to use $50 words when they could have used the typical counterpart but I did not see that in anything you wrote.

I am not sure what your original statement was to cause such excitement but don't let it bother you. People, by nature, seem to be confrontational these days. I attribute most to miserably angry lives that they live to full desperation day after day looking for that one string they can pull to conjure up their best NG flames so their NG buddies will laugh and join in. Most of their arguments resort to name calling and have no real substance over the topic or post to which they are responding.

I agree that SP is a tasteless show about things we as adults imagined we did when we were 8 years old. Unfortunately, some people still act as if they were 8. If you'd like someone to take the lion's share of the flames then I'll do it. The people who were slamming you wouldn't know their head from a hole in the ground.

Matt and Trey <<are>> Kenny. To some extent every one of us is all of the kid characters in South Park. Kenny is an underdog because he's poor. Other characters are oppressed in other ways, but the reality is that most children resort to cruelty and violence as a means of compensating for their feelings of inferiority, as do most of the children on the show. Adults can look at the unfairness and inequity on South Park and laugh at themselves, and maybe think a little.

Kenny

I'll admit that the running gag of killing Kenny (almost) every episode is, in itself, funny in a superficially juvenile way. But that isn't all there is to it. On one of the 'fireside chats' on the video collection, Matt and Trey tell us that the reason Kenny always dies is because he is poor. That doesn't mean they hate poor people, it means they sympathies with their plight.

Listen, I know too many parallels are drawn between SP and other animated shows like The Simpsons, and Beavis and Butthead. But they all use animation, a traditionally 'kid-targeted' submedium, to make very adult points. Granted, all I've ever managed to glean from B&B is the farce of most authority figures seem to make of their position and the perceived pointlessness of adolescent life, but it definitely goes beyond being a funny show about self-mutilation, pyromaniacy, and masturbating in the bathroom.

The Simpsons seems to share something deeper with SP, in that the even with the (truthfully flawed) innocence of youth, the kids have a better idea of what life is about than the adults. Sure they laugh at the kind of things kids laugh at, and they make us laugh too. . . But when they make fun of Kyle for being Jewish, or Kenny for being poor, can't we see that these are responses programmed into them by the gerentocracy of their society? Take the end of the conjoined twin myslexia episode where only the kids seemed to understand what the town was doing wrong, and why the Nurse's response was not that of a selfish 'bitch,' but rather the appropriate response.

Matt and Trey kill Kenny because he is poor. Don't we, by our routine actions of post-industrialist consumption, in a way kill poor people everyday?

Douglas Rushkoff wrote in _Media Virus_ (1994, Ballentine Books p. 100-101) The most imaginative of kids' shows, though, appeal to the parents, too. In the tradition of . . . "Rocky and His Friends," most kids' shows are directed at the child on one level and at the parent on another. There is a subtle, usually satirical or ironic communication going on between the makers of kids' TV and the parents who are watching alongside their children. This communication almost always has an irreverent tone, as if to counterbalance the surface sweetness or moral uprightness of the show's main message.

This is why kids' television has become, perhaps, the media's best conduit for controversial memes. The shows, their styles, and their characters serve as innocuous veneers for the hidden agendas of their creators. The Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons, made in the sixties, were a tongue-in-cheek satire of America's cold war paranoia. . .

And they were great cartoons. Bugs Bunny picked on "high society", on people who were making money during the depression, and even on the studio that created him.

One thing people forget is that cartoons were never originally intended for children. They were entertainment for adults, shown as part of the day's movies. I don't know exactly when they became kiddie fare.

Rabbit
