A quick note on hermaphrodites

Just to let everyone know, no one is BORN a hermaphrodite.(humans, I mean) The only way you could be a hermaphrodite would be if you had surgery. Plus, if you were a woman, and you had surgery to become a hermaphrodite, you could not get a woman pregnant. Same with a man becoming a hermaphrodite, he(or she) could not become pregant. Which would mean Cartman's mom was orginally a man. Then again, you cant take everything on this show too seriously.(kenny had died more than a dozen times)

Ryan, no where in that quotation does it say that humans are exempt from hermaphroditism. All it says is that bony fishes are more common for this trait than other vertebrates. I would suggest taking a trip down to the local library and get a bit more info on this subject. When you're done there, have a burger and fries at the mall. Relax, it's only a TV show about 4 little cardboard cut-out kids in an imaginary town dealing with being made out of cardboard.

This whole discussion is out of hand. Let me sum it up. Hermaphroditism does occur in humans. It is considered a genetic mutation and is jjust as rare as any other.The result is a human who appears outwardly female with small breats incapable of lactation and two sets of genatalia. While completely functional sexually, they cannot bear children or fertilize an egg cell.

hermaphrodism(sp) is rare in humans...but it does happen...if you think that they're going to have two healthy sets of reproducting organs then you're wrong, that is extremely uncommon...but they might be more female with a slight appendage that could be considered a penis, or vice versa, it has to do with an imbalance in Chromosomes.

so in this case both are right...you're not going to find a true blue hermaphrodite in a human that can impregnate someone and on the same token get pregnant themselves..although who knows

Hermaphrodites occur NATURALLY in some species as a mean of reproduction. Often, it's because individuals live so far appart that finding a mate would be extremely difficult. In humans though, It's a BIRTH DEFECT, It's most likely a genetical anomaly (but that's just what I figure).

In fact, I just remembered that 60 Minutes or 20/20 (I can't remember which) did a show on human hermaphrodites within the last 3 months. The focus of the show was on the emotional scars the hermaphrodites carried into adulthood as the medical community was split on whether the hermaphrodites should have a predominate sex picked and raised as that or should they just let them discover what they were most comfortable with and then possibly have corrective surgery later in life. It was discovered that, sometimes, the parents would pick a sex and have corrective surgery done while the child was still young. So, Ryan, go practice your research techniques. Maybe you could dig a *little* deeper than a CD-ROM encyclopedia. I expect a 500 word or less essay on my desk before homeroom Tuesday. (and no fair just cutting and pasting without original comments from yourself).

By the way, before you pounce on *my* research, no I am not offering the TV show as absolute proof of my thesis. That is simply anecdotal evidence presented to lend support to my position.

I don't know any of you, but just for refrence, my cousin was born a hermaphrodite, my aunt and uncle chose for it to be a girl, and now she does all kinds of weird stuff like trying to pee standing up and such.

I think most of these are corrected at birth by no means am i an expert on the topic but i know they exist and i also know that they are sterile which makes it imposible for mrs cartman to be erics mother or father and the whole plot a gimmicky solution. I discussed this with a friend of mine last night who had read a book about genetic flukes and freaks of nature. Hermaphrodites are just that: a genetic quirk. One out of every million or so women are born with a penis.
