This group has become hopelessly clogged with tones of crap, but that's all been covered so I'll cut to the chase. Would any of you be interested in an alt.tv.southpark.moderated? I'm fundamentaly opposed to moderated groups, but this is getting stupid. If there's interest, we can discuss posting requirements etc. at a later time.

As obnoxious as I find some of the habitual trolls on this list, I'd hate to go to a moderated one. Moderated lists have this irritating habit of staying on- topic and I, honestly, don't think there's enough South Park out there to maintain a conversation and stay completely on-topic.

I never intended to make a moderated group so it would stay strictly on topic. I read newsgroups for the off topic stuff mainly. All the senseless newbie postings about stuff that has been covered to death, the endless cascade flame wars wears on you after a while. At any rate, I envisoned a place where the less desireable element wouldn't be present, kinda like a group killfile. The longer, boring threads would be cut off, the obviously irrelevant ECP threads, like the 'Jesus is the LORD!' plague of late and, if deemed neccesary, one could be excommunicated from the group. Yes, please! I usually don't like moderated groups, but desperated times call for desperate measures. When I check the new posts in the group today, over half of them were totally off topic. This is nuts.

It may be. Let's wait, though, to see what happens about four days after tonights episode. Tonights posts were back on track - don't know how many I didn't see by the ignorant one in the group - thank goodness. Four days from now, you should see if the group begins to show it's dark side again. It's sad when this is suppose to be a about great TV show and it has become someones sick, twisted way of trying to be popular or gain what they think is power. Society has a strange way of stepping back - not forward.

I mean, we were in a dry spell for a while, with new episodes being few and far between. (How much SP can reasonably be discussed ad nauseum, after all...) I'd guess that in January when new episodes start airing regularly, the inanity will go away. But, if a moderated group did open up, I'd haul ass over there forthwith.

It seems to me the primary problem with this ng is the lack of historic material to discuss made worse with the extraordinary time lag for new material. Thats what seems to get the wee ones agitated. Add onto that the fact that SP is a cartoon that attracts all ages, especially 11-15ers who are starting to feel their oats. I'm hopeful that once there is a show a week, or fortnight, things may settle down. But back to the moderated ng. Please educate me, who exactly will the moderators be? How wide a latitude will be allowed given the subject matter? Is there a "court of last resorts"? Thanx

What makes you say that? This is most likely one of the highest traffic groups on Usenet. Even on a slow day it out does all of n.a.n-a.*. I haven't looked at alt.gothic or alt.religion.$cientology to compare numbers, but this group generates tremendous amounts of traffic. The proposal could be made so that alt.tv.southpark.moderated would replace alt.tv.southpark if the ISP so desired, so the smaller ISPs could get rid of a group that's mostly noise.

All right, there's obviously support for a moderated group. However, MisinYou made a good point: we should wait a few days after the christmas episode and see what happens. I haven't read the group in since Tuesday, so I can't say for sure what articles were posted when without a major headache. Therefore, let's see what it looks like on Sunday. If the group is back to all it's normal hyginx<sp?>, then we'll talk more about the specfics. If not, it would probably be better to just stay with this group. As for the less desireable element of this group, remember that it's very easy to killfile someone. Assuming you have that capability, of course. It's also just as easy to not read the posts of anyone you don't like. I don't think I need to name names, so use your best judgement.
