Grammer, the hell with it!

Why is it so many people in this NG are obsessed with grammer, it's the internet, nobodies gonna take the time to write everything perfect and spelcheck it all. I never do. why bother, so my point is, stop complainin about peoples grammer!

Because it makes posts a damn sight easier to read and understand. Of course, if you don't mind nobody bothering to read your posts, or if you don't mind that people will generally come to the conclusion that you're an ignorant or illiterate idiot, then it's your choice.

Not even we copy editors (yes, there are more than one of us here) are "obsessed" with it. It's just that clueless spelling and bad grammar are the most obvious flags of illiteracy and ignorance, so they serve like a label over a poster's head that reads "Caution -- Moron Below. Expect Off-The-Wall Outbursts And Baseless Assertions."

Dyslexics excluded, the people who barf up those gems are doing us all a service by warning us in advance that they're neither smart enough or attentive enough to learn to spell simple words or write simple sentences, so their views are quickly discounted by other readers and invite ridicule. That's neither right nor wrong, it just is. In a perfect Usenet, nobody would bother replying to these frothing, pouty, immature, self-absorbed, attention-starved control freaks; thus, they would never hold an audience and would quickly stop posting or (maybe) grow up. Of course, that'll never happen. (And one could also argue that, in a perfect Usenet, they wouldn't even be able to post in the first place.)

Then again, perfection can be boring, and we've all probably noticed that the more these people post, the funnier they become. The bottom line: illiterates can be fun to watch, and certain users who have the time to spend taunting them -- and the brains to do it creatively -- can provide us all a little extra comic relief while we wait for new episodes.
